2015-2016 University of Cincinnati Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
12/2 to for me. I spent yesterday checking my mail. I am just hoping that they still meet this week and send out notice this week.

Has anyone who interviewed in December heard back yet? I'm getting worried...

I interviewed the first week of December and got accepted the next week... So it's possible to have heard back already, but it was also very clear (I asked) that that was extremely fast turnaround and that most of the other people hearing back that day were from November interviews. They seem to give out acceptances once a month, usually the first week of the month.. according to last year's threads, people were accepted on Jan 8th. Interestingly, it looks like people always post that they were accepted on a Thursday (this year - Oct 15, Nov 5, Dec 3). So I'm thinking tomorrow is the day. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear!!!

It seems like you're an MSTP applicant, right? From what I've heard, your process is a bit different from standard MD applicants correct?

Yes, I am, and you're correct - the interview visit itself is definitely longer since it consists of the MMI interview through the MD committee as well as lot of additional interviews on the MSTP/PhD side.

At Cincinnati, MSTP applicants are considered "individually by the medical school admissions committee and the MSTP admissions committee" - they were very clear that MD/PhD applicants had to be accepted on both sides of the equation to get the overall acceptance (this isn't true at all schools). It's possible that the MSTP committee pressured the MD committee to release their decision ASAP, aka in the December round of acceptances, and that's why I heard early.

Either way, all the dates I pulled in my previous post are from straight MD posters in this/last years thread

12/2 and no status update yet. If there was a limit to the number of times one could check their status, my portal would be blocked by now. I check it almost every 30 mins when awake:nailbiting::nailbiting::bang::bang:.

Do they said II via email or just through the portal?

When I received my acceptance, I was checking the portal as a last-ditch hope because I hadn't received an email on the day they said I would hear back The portal was updated, but the email didn't come until later (within 24 hours though, not sure why).

Same for me, I found out via portal a day before.

Had my interview yesterday. We were told that interviewing will go through January and that the committee is a little backed up due to the holidays.

For those who got a background check email, did you already have acceptances from a school?

I assumed that would be the only reason you'd get one, because a school that had accepted you requested it.

yup: "You have received this email because you have been waitlisted or conditionally accepted by one or more of the medical schools participating in the AAMC-facilitated program for performing criminal background checks on conditionally accepted applicants and waiting list applicants."

Congrats @Benedict Arnold! I haven't heard anything yet, and my portal hasn't been updated. Anyone else from 12/02 in my boat? I swear I'm going to pee my pants

Bull****!

"Thank you for interviewing at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM). We wanted to inform you that, due to the holidays, admission decisions have been delayed. You should receive a final decision late next week. Decisions are sent via your personal MedOneStop status page and you will receive an email informing you when your decision has been updated to your page.

Thank you for your patience as we carefully review your application portfolios.

Sincerely,
The UCCOM Admissions Office

Got the same email as well. At this point my confused mind is thinking "Am I rejected or waitlisted and why do I have to wait a week?" But that's ok , they have been busy. I hope it works out for us all:=|:-):

Guys I need help. What laptop do you think will be best for medical school? My current laptop gave up on me after a 5 year journey. I need sth durable obviously. I was thinking of Apple laptops since they apparently last longer and do not get viruses but I do not know how much internal memory/ flash storage to get. Thank you!

I'm in the same boat. I heard those Microsoft laptops are really good for med school, bc you can detach the screen and use it as a tablet too and carry them around for rotations. But the people I've talked to about it also have it alongside their normal laptop.

It might help to find a less specific thread for this kind of info though. I'm going to be doing my own research and I can let you know what I find!

I really like the Asus Zenbook. It's light, fast, silent, very portable, has the nicest keyboard that I've used besides the iMac, and they're cheap, way cheaper than a Macbook.

Thank you for your comments. I will keep them in mind.

Are you guys putting your parents' info on FAFSA? My parents make too much for me to get any institutional aid, so I don't see any point in putting their info on it. But then again I have never applied for financial aid before and have no idea what I'm doing so.

Edit: actually does anyone know how little your parents have to make to qualify for institutional aid? Just wanna be sure 😛

Usually with fafsa, you have to include your parent's information, or it automatically includes it. I could be wrong, but I think only the graduate school loans exclude your parent's information.

Sorry what do you mean, it automatically includes it?
I just don't know what to do because my dad isn't filing his taxes until like late March, and I don't know if I should use his 2014 income because his 2015 income is probably going to be around $100,000 more than 2014.

Cincinnati requires parental data, they even request that you send a copy of parental w2 to be sent in.

Really?? I thought I read on their website yesterday that they specifically said parental info is not required.

It depends, Only applicants applying for institutional need-based financial aid must submit signed photocopies of their parents’ federal tax returns, I would assume that merit or recruitment scholarships would not.

Oh okay, I was talking about for federal loans, sorry should have clarified! Very little chance of institutional need-based aid for me, unfortunately.

I'm in the same boat, esp being the youngest with all of the kids out of the house - my parents' income isn't going to help me out. Is it still worth applying to need based aid at institutions though? Like, should I have mindset of 'APPLY TO ALL THE THINGS' or no?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙂

ps by when do we need that background thing to be done by!?

I decided that I'm just going to get my parents' info and apply to everything, why not I guess. Kinda sucks having well-off parents who refuse to help pay for med school on principle. Like I'm glad they're not paying for it because I agree that you should be financially independent as soon as possible, but it kind of sucks that their success makes me ineligible for financial aid.

I think you best option, if you have questions is to call the financial office and get advice on what to do. We were told everyone in the office is very helpful. I will like to start worrying about financial aid at UC by the end of this week:whistle:

Since your taxes will be filed for the previous year, you should probably use the 2015 income. And I just mean that all your parent's tax information is already on file with the government, so it's not like you can hide it from them. They already really know. Haha.

While that's true, neither FAFSA nor the school can access it without permission. If you don't include your parent's tax info, it won't be used.

Anyone know when waitlist will be formulated/announced?
