Hi guys, so I just received II from Cincinatti, and I'm not sure if I should attend. They get a lot of research funding, and it's ranked significantly higher than another school I got accepted to where tuition is 17k. However, I would have to pay out-of-state tuition. Step scores and match lists seem to be pretty similar between the 2 schools, so right now I'm hesitant about cost. Does it make sense to attend the interview? Current students, what would you say justifies the significantly higher cost? Thanks!

You can get Ohio residency after the first year and pay IS tuition for years 2-4.
I would attend the interview unless you're really strapped for cash.

Thanks! Well, even with IS residency, I have to pay double in tuition. Looking through other threads, I didn't see any mentions of scholarships, so it looks like tuition costs are 139 (while its 68 at the other school).
I was just wondering if there were any programs/quirks/etc. I missed on the website that would justify the cost. Off the top of my head, I remember nutrition, Longitudinal Primary Care Clinical Experience, and Medical Scholars, and similar opportunities were available at the other school.
 
I can tell you that after interviewing there, I became MUCH more excited about the school than I had been previously. I can't give you anything more concrete than that, and I can't say that it justifies double tuition (speaking of which, you must be lucky enough to be a Texas resident, because that's the only state I know of with IS tuition costs that low), but it's really a great school, and Cincinnati in general is an awesome city, to settle down in or just to be for a few years.

@sooooooowhatdoido Just my two cents - I originally applied to Cincinnati as an afterthought, but the interview process blew me away, especially compared to other interviews I attended. If you can afford to go to the interview, I'd encourage you to go... I fell in love with this school and the amazing administration even though I was lukewarm about Cincinnati pre-interviews.
 
I should probably know this, but is Cincinnati P/F? Also, does anyone know how much time students spend in lecture per week?
 
UC is P/F, however, they also grade you, and your number scores affect your class standing. From what I remember, it was about 15 hours per week of didactics.

After I posted that, I read somewhere that it was Honors/high pass/pass/ etc. Are you sure it's actually a true P/F school? Maybe what I was reading was old or was for years 3 and 4, though, I'm not sure.
And thanks! 15 hours isn't /too/ bad. I'm really not a lecture person so trying to avoid it as much as possible.

The first two years (pre-clinical grades) are P/F, but you are still ranked in one of 5 tiers (e.g. top 20%, bottom 20%, etc.) and it is noted in your dean's letter for residency applications. However, clinical grades are honors, high pass, pass, fail.

Normal lectures are not mandatory and are recorded, so you can live stream them at home or watch later (there are options to watch them at an increased speed too.) Labs and group learning sessions are mandatory- although I don't believe these are counted as part of the 15 hours of didactics (not sure about this last part.)

Someone might correct me on some of this, but I'm pretty positive this is how grading and lecture attendance are handled at Cincinnati after skimming the student handbook and watching a video on their website.

I think those from 12/02 would find out around the 8th from what I gathered from past threads. But next week would be awesome 🙄
 
Does anyone here know how they look at alternate list applicants? I interviewed here a while ago--and loved it, a lot more than I thought I would. I just didn't seem to get too much info on it during the day, they mostly discussed the interview process.

II invitation a few weeks ago! Excited to have a shot at the school that's been my number choice for years! Bring on the MMI!
 
IS applicant with competitive stats but have not been given an interview. Does anyone know the last interview day?
 
1/27 is the last date listed, but I was pretty sure they interview all the way through March. I got my II two weeks before the date, so definitely don't give up hope until at least 1/13.
I know how you feel, though. This is the only school to offer me an interview so far, even though I'm IS with competitive stats. I haven't been able to find the dates for the other schools, so I'm wondering how much longer to keep waiting...

Oh interesting! I thought they said on interview day it was March but I could have gotten it confused!
 
So i have an interview on the 6th and am really worried on what the whole MMI means and if am prepared. Kind of wish i hadn't moved my December interview date but exams in my masters course held me back. also someone said interviewing this late isn't a good sign ..

Try seeing it this way. You got an interview to a great institution, which means that they are definitely interested in you and want to get to know you better. If that's not a good sign, I don't know what is. 🙂

As for the MMI, I wouldn't stress out about it. Quite honestly, there's really nothing to prepare for or read up on -- just be yourself, communicate effectively, and smile a lot. Good luck!

^^ agreed. At the interview they'll talk you through the MMI process in detail, which I think really helps before going in. If you're nervous, just google some questions (and/or youtube videos) and practice talking through your answers out loud. It really flies by and it seems a lot scarier than it actually is!

Don't be stressed out about the MMI. Trust me, they will do EVERYTHING possible on interview day to inform you, relax you, and reassure you that the process is less stressful and more useful than a traditional 1-on-1 interview. Think of it as med school interview speed dating. It's fun, it's exciting, it's a game. You're going to meet 8 new people over the course of an hour, and for two of them, you're going to pretend you're old friends. They're going to ask you off-the-wall questions, and so just go with the flow and be honest, creative, and confident.

That was not my experience. There was no "Why become a physician," or "Why UC?" or "Tell me about your research experience." There were a couple kiiind of similar ones ("What unique contribution will you bring?" and an acting station to convince someone ELSE why they shouldn't drop out), but for the most part, it was all very different, meant to keep you on your toes, keep you out of a rut, with something new and completely off the wall every eight minutes.

Let's just say, the MMI is a unique experience. Do not stress out about time because it will fly by without you realizing it. Dr Tissot talked to us about the process to calm our nerves but who are we kidding😎, I'm sure we were all still nervous😱. I would say, be yourself. Sometimes I planned how to answer a question while waiting to go in but then said something else. You will run out of time before you run out of what to say. All the students and staff members I met were very pleasant. I was nervous:scared: but comfortable🙂. I really hope to get an acceptance this week UC:xf:. I thought the questions were standard questions that were gift wrapped. That's the only interpretation that could come to mind:happy: I wish you the best:hello:!

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm not overly worried about the MMI, just wanted to know if I should prep as I would the day before any other interview. This will probably be my last so I'm hoping to go out with a bang!
 
Wait, does anyone know if its true or false about only interviewing up until January?
 
Sooo, results this week from 12/02, maybe?! I can't fully express the anxiety and stress this has caused me over the past month...

If you want a definite answer on the interview window, I would definitely call the Admissions office, because there seems to be conflicting info between their website and what people heard during interviews.

anyone know how the background check works? They said after Jan 1st, but I just wanted to make sure I didnt miss it in an email! and Do we have to pay for it or was that part of the AMCAS fee?

for reg applicants it says a background check will be conducted after jan 1st and then they notify us.. this is for any school that performs background checks, but I havent received anything from Centerphi ( the company that actually conducts them for AMCAS) and I think we have to pay for it? but not sure!

Ohh okay so they'll contact us about paying for it? Or is this something we have to do independently?
 
I've been wondering about the background check as well, but it looks like everyone is just as in the dark as I am...
 
I've kind of been wondering about everything honestly. Has anyone received any information about background checks, transcripts, vaccination records, etc, etc. I don't want to miss anything and I have literally done nothing since I got my acceptance in early November. The Facebook group is also super quiet so there's no info there.

Nah, I also have done nothing since late October. I think it's still very early so I'm sure we will be getting more info within the next few months.
And thanks for reminding me that I still need to get my flu shot. I do not wanna have to go looking for one of those in July lol.
 
I had from a friend of a friend that someone got accepted already from a December interview date, but I'm not sure if this is correct... Now I'm really scared 🙁
