2015-2016 University of Cincinnati Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone else get a phone call about second look? I was accepted in October too and haven't gotten an email or phone call about it.

Huh, that's weird! Maybe I'm just special 🙄
Although the guy who called didn't say anything about like signing up, it was just an invitation.

Future applicant here....would those that have been accepted care to post their GPAs and MCAT scores? Thanks 🙂
cGPA: 3.77, sGPA: 3.65, MCAT: 32 (balanced), IS, Strong ECs with lots of leadership and clinical exposure, 3 yrs of Research+ 1 publication. Good luck!! 🙂

I'm pretty set on attending UC, so is there really a point in flying over for Second Look? Does anyone know what actually happens at UC's Second Look?

basically to sell you on the school/ talk more about curriculum and cincy/meet your future classmates. Also helps people to find roomies or if you're torn between two schools , this hopefully would help! ( i say that because I've been going back and forth on which school I wanna go to lol)

Does Cincinnati tend to send out decisions at a certain time of day? I'm trying to get myself to stop anxiously checking the portal every hour of every day lol.

If any current students are able to shed some light: Are students able to find research projects with the children's hospital pretty easily? For research in general, how common is it to receive funding? Thanks!

Well, this is awkward. A few hours after RSVPing for Second Look, I was booking reservations for a camping trip, and as I pressed the "book reservation" button I said, "I hope I don't have anything planned for that weekend that I don't know about....OH MY GOD NO IT'S SECOND LOOK WEEKEND". But it was too late and the reservation is non-refundable. So I guess I won't be attending Second Look. Am I going to regret this?

I won't be able to attend either and I spoke to admissions, they're going to record the main sessions and have materials available for those who can't go, on the second look site. They also welcomed setting up an alternative visit. So no, I don't think (or at least hope) you'll miss anything valuable, other than meeting potential classmates early, I guess.

Oh awesome! Thanks for letting me know.

I don't have numbers for either of your questions but my general impression is that most people who want to do research at childrens don't have much trouble finding a PI/project. As far a funding goes, I think a good majority of people who end up doing research over the summer get funded and there are several avenues to seek out funding (scholars programs, MSSRP, department funding, other grants). However, quite a few people who plan on doing research and can't get funding secured will switch over to other summer opportunities in order to get paid, so that skews things somewhat.

That's very helpful, thanks!

I've been visiting Cincinnati all weekend and I'm absolutely in love with this city. It's so amazing, I love all the little squares with cute little shops and restaurants. I've found a really nice place to live in the Gaslight area. I'm so excited to move down here!!!

Does anyone know when movement from the waitlist generally occurs? Is there much movement for the waitlist here?

hey guys - could some current students or those familiar with Cincinnati throw out some neighborhoods that would be close by (either walking or car)? Starting to take a look at housing 🙂

Not a current student, but the Gaslight area (where I will be living) is really close, like a 10-15 minute walk, and it seems like a really cool area!

A friend recommended going through the Uptown Rental Properties: uptownrents.com. I would view the listings by map location -- it helped me find the studio I recently scored just a few blocks from campus in East Clifton! Happy hunting 🙂

Thanks @Lannister , @brotherin , @lmaonade ! I currently live in Boston so I've just been craigslisting and drooling over these AMAZING midwest prices!

Did any of you secure a place without physically visiting it? I won't be able to check things out until June probably when I take my super long pre-med school vacation, and I don't want everything to fill up by then!

I visited the place, but a lot of the places I contacted were full so I didn't want to wait any longer before signing a lease.

I'll speak from my experience with Uptown Rentals, which owns a lot of properties in the area. I personally visited to just make sure I myself got the right "feel," but it wasn't absolutely necessary since the website includes floor plans and pictures for each model. I actually originally wasn't going to visit since I live out of state as well, but decided to make the road trip anyway. I liked confirming that my first choice was indeed what I wanted, but at the end I thought the pictures on the website were still accurately representing the apartments.

Once you find something you like, all it takes is to just send in an application, get approved, send in your security deposit, and sign your lease agreement -- all of which you can do online/via email. For Uptown Rentals, you also have the option of moving in early on Aug 1 (instead of the typical Aug 15) for an extra $250 but there's a limited number of spots for that because they can only have this expedited process for 30-40 people. Message is, if you want that Aug 1 option especially since school starts then, I would jump on these apartments.

You're still ahead of the game since it isn't April yet, but if you don't want any stress, start buckling down now 🙂

Sorry if this has already been asked but I haven't gotten any emails about financial aid. I filled out my FAFSA, but is there a Cincinnati specific application we have to fill out? Thanks 🙂

I did get an email about financial aid on February 1st. Log into the portal and go to Applying for Aid.

I know we can confirm our acceptance after receiving it but is there currently an option to indicate "yes I'm for sure locking down with UC" right now? Or is that after they send out financial packages? I've gone through the portal and I haven't found anything. Thanks!

You just withdraw all your other acceptances and they assume that whatever school you're still holding an acceptance to after the deadline (May 2nd, I think) is the school you will be attending.

Hey people coming to 2nd look - are we getting breakfast!? Critical question here.

Does anybody know if your application for the loans and financial need has to be reviewed before scholarships are given out? Are they separate processes?

From reading last year's thread, I would think the answer to this is no, since the deadline for FAFSA is April 15th but almost all scholarships are given out before First Look.

Wow, I'm glad they sent out that email with the school code cuz it turns out I entered the wrong one on FAFSA!
