2015-2016 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anything really is possible for those of us that are Decision Pending, but the uncertainty is killer. This is only hearsay, but I've heard from multiple people that UICOM typically gets a lot of seat openings and movement off the waitlist. This means there is good reason for us to hope for the best, but timing still forces us to prepare for and constantly think about plan B.

I called last week, and the person I spoke with said that the adcom was in the process of making the waitlist. So it's nice to know that things are moving forward and we will soon get closure.

I think we both know that's not true

If I was on UIC admissions and I saw how much negative stuff you post on here about UIC's admission process and such, I would reject you solely on the basis of that. I get you're frustrated and tired of waiting but you haven't been rejected yet. You post something negative everyday. Take a break and focus on this upcoming cycle, and maybe do something off the internet for a while, because at this point your not positively contributing to the conversation here and you are only hurting yourself

Fair enough

I've only posted like one thing on here today! That being said, I apologize to both of you. I shouldn't externalize my thoughts about it as much on SDN because it's unproductive and gets me nowhere. And I don't ever want to bring anybody down. I hope you guys hear good news soon.

Really? I saw it as dry humor and a coping mechanism..which is kind of why this thread exists. I've been there before and it's not a good feeling. to be able to communicate that,I think, is better than him lying to himself that he's happy and repressing his thoughts. Of course, doing it 24/7 isn't great, but to dismiss it...Idk. I guess I see it as an instance of "it's ok to feel frustrated" thing.

Trust me bananafish, I'm rooting for you. I'm also on the WL at Rosalind Franklin and Rush, and I agree that the wait has been difficult and at times almost impossible to bear. Being a much older non-trad, my life experiences have taught me that one large measure of a person is how they handle themselves in the face of adversity. I'm sure that one day when we are practicing physicians and dealing with procedures and treatments that go less than optimally, the situations will behoove us to stay composed and overcome them in a productive and positive manner.

Although I appreciate the concern, the thread actually exists to discuss Illinois admissions. So here is my objective, non-fatalistic analysis of the decision pending thing:

Unless my memory is failing me, I recall very few posts reporting post-interview rejections or waitlists (except for the last round of interviews). So I imagine that for the people who are currently decision pending, at the next meeting the people who would have been accepted off the waitlist if the waitlist had been created earlier will be accepted. The people who would be lower down on a normal waitlist will be officially "waitlisted," and the others will be rejected. I do very much hope that they make decisions before the first day of AMCAS submission, but we'll just have to wait and see.

I agree. There are ways to vent strategically and intelligibly without coming across as abrasive, repetitive, fatalistic, and unrealistically pessimistic. While a lot of us are sympathetic to bananafish's situation (most of us are in the same boat), I'm sure that many of us can agree that a threshold has been crossed to the point of being counterproductive. I do get that this thread is here for support, but being repeatedly negative ad nauseum just spreads dread and paranoia.

To be fair though, bananafish makes me feel like I'm not alone in this process, and brings a little humor to the situation. It really depends on how you read into it. I actually really look forward to his posts. Keep doing you, bananafish!

Also, I think if you guys had a problem with what was being said, you could have messaged bananafish directly. I think that is a better and more productive way of handling something that is bothering you.

I didn't know you were on the waitlist at Rush! I admire the non-trad people on here because they seem to handle everything so much better than I do. I recognize the constraints of my limited worldview (being a senior in college) and one silver lining of the gap year is that hopefully it will be a maturing experience.

Agreed, and we discussed that there is a chance, despite their snail pace decision making. Very non fatalistic. Hang tight. They have to get back to you sooner or later

As I said on some other thread, if they don't reject me by the time classes start I'm treating it as a de-facto acceptance and showing up.

Any other UPR folk get the email from Nora Few? Where did it ever say UPR had a different certified profile code? The original acceptance packet only had the one code, UG31. I'm also really frustrated because I already got (and paid for) my drug test. Nowhere in that May 2nd email did it say that those requirements were just for Chicago students. Grr.

Yep. So begins the confusion that is their administration lol.

By my understanding, UG31 = Chicago immunizations, UG31dr = Chicago drug test, and UG32 = UPR immunizations. The UG31 and 32 were already available on the college of medicine admissions website.

Right but, I've been working on this literally since I was admitted, and what was sent out with the admissions packet was only the UG31 code. Never was it mentioned in the admissions packet that there were different codes for Chicago and Peoria.

Hi all!

First, sorry for posting on here, but I thought this was a great opportunity for Chicago residents!

There is a job opening at the University of Chicago for a research assistant in the Department of Medicine. If you have a friend looking to take a gap year or two and they have prior research experience, this is a great opportunity! Message me for specifics AND best of luck to all those applying this round!

Does this mean we have to call Certified Profile and explain the mishap and have them change the code from UG31 to UG32 if we are in the UPR track?

Someone posted on the UPR track Facebook page. She said that they are working out a way to transfer over the information from the Chicago CP to the UPR one

I just called Certified Profile. They are able to change the code to UG32, but unfortunately you will have to transfer the documents from UG31 to UG32. Even though it sounds like a pain, it only took like 10 minutes.

The UG32 certified profile is showing it is for "2015 admits". Is this what other UPR students are seeing as well?

Also, for the chicago students, does it have "2015 admits" or "2016 admits" next to your code on top?

SIgh. I already paid and started a new order for UG32. I guess I'll just call and see if I can cancel the UG31 order.

Edit: Just called CertifiedProfile. They said they could cancel and refund the extra order!

Where are you guys doing your drug screens and antibody tests?
Already did all my titers. It's good to get them done early, because repeating vaccinations could take awhile, especially if you test negative for something like Hep B.

I already did my drug test also, but then found out UPR doesn't need it. >.>

How recent does the tb test have to be? I got a tb test in October of 2015

I believe most schools require within 6 months of matriculation. If it's a two step test some schools will allow you to only have to do the second step if the first reading was within a year.

Thanks! I called and they said as long as it was within one year....
Thanks!

Sorry for all of the questions.. Do we have to get a background check? I thought it was a requirement for all Illinois med schools but I don't see it in our admissions packet.
Thanks!

"Starting in mid to late December, a background check will automatically be emailed to you from Certiphi Screening, Inc.,. (You do not have to initiate this; they will contact you first). Once you hear from Certiphi Screening, Inc., please complete the criminal background process as requested by them."

I would assume that this statement is true for all med schools but if someone has further insight, that'd be appreciated!

I can't speak for UIC, but for Cincinnati we had to do another background check in addition to Certiphi (It cost like $150 x.x). I just assumed all med schools did this.

Did you just do it at your PCP's? Just got back to my home state now and am trying to get it all sorted out.

UIC requires Certiphi. The fee for Certiphi is included in your AMCAS fees.

You will also be required to complete IdentoGo fingerprinting services ($52.50).
Will they be sending this info later or is something that we should already get done? I never got anything regarding this. I'm talking about the IdentoGo fingerprinting services

Thanks everyone! I didn't receive any of this info either. Do we have to do this before August?

So all the titer info is in the pamphlet that came along with the admission package. The 10-panel drug screening I think is for Chicago folks which is emailed to you with the admission checklist.

I have no idea about the finger print stuff.

Also all the titer and drug panel along with official transcripts are due by July 1st (as per the conversation I had with Pamela Slaughter).

Hope this helps!

Today's the day for us decision pending folks!

Just checking because I'm a bit confused by the past few posts on this, have they confirmed this? I know one post said they said they'd let us know by the end of May so I'm just trying to avoid getting my hopes up about hearing back today haha.

I believe it was @bananafish94 who called last week and the committee said they would be meeting today.

I just called and the person on the phone said he didn't know if the admissions committee was meeting today, and even if they did decisions wouldn't be sent out today.
What is this person even being paid for? 😡

He/She is kinda right. They don't send them out right away, instead do it tomorrow or Monday. Since it is May already, they might just scan your decision and send it to you. When did you have your interview?

Yeah, definitely don't count on getting info from them the adcom purposely keep them out of the blue so they can't provide info even if they wanted to. It's like Comcast customer support. They have a scripted response to general questions.

Well thank you for calling and keeping us updated. I just deleted the beginnings of like 5 different bitter comments regarding this admissions process lol. I will now take a moment to resummon some patience.
