2015-2016 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Late to the party that is happening in this thread!

my #1 school - will be attending there for sure

IS

Secondary Invite: late July
Completed Secondary: mid-late August
II: mid-late September
Interview: Early October
Accepted: mid-late October

Good luck to everyone, I'd be happy to answer any questions. I look forward to perhaps going to school with LucyG, mtr221, and New_Slang and other accepted students

Do you know how long we have to get our transcripts sent? I'm at work and don't have my acceptance packet on me? I know class reservation was 3 weeks and immunization and health forms 8 weeks, but I can't remember how long for transcripts... thanks

Theoretically if you're still in school, you can't send them and it isn't reasonable for them to expect them. So just wait.

If you're like me and have undergrad, grad, and post-bacc transcripts, but are not currently in school, just send them now to check that box off your to-do list.

Hey guys,

A lot of you said the interview questions were normal or typical medical school questions. What exactly are "normal" questions? 😛 When you guys say the interview was formal, does that just mean they seem to ask a standard set of questions? Any help would be appreciated, please and thank you.

"normal" as in "why medicine", questions about your application, your hobbies. Formal as in similar to what you would experience at a mock interview: interviewer asks you a series of question and then and you ask questions to the interviewer at the end.

I'm like 80% sure one of my interviewers googled "Medical school interview questions" and just asked me a few off the list. Which was good because that's pretty much what I did to prepare for my interviews

Awesome, thanks guys!

^piggybacking onto my own post, does anyone know if there is a Class of 2020 Facebook group circulating that we can join to ask any questions or connect with current students and potential future classmates? 🙂

Congrats, classmate! And no, I haven't seen a FB group yet.

Does anyone know any stats about the Maryland Waitlist? How many students are waitlisted? How many are accepted off the waitlist? Percent of accepted students who come off the waitlist? Etc...

Based on Entering Class of 2015 (Class of 2019) data, 340 acceptances were sent. 160 Matriculate, so I assume a healthy number of people come off the WL. I believe UMD has a ranking system for WL.

Question for current or accepted students. In our packet, we received a Health/Immunization form that needs to be returned within 8 weeks. Is that regardless of whether or not we are attending for sure? Do we need to send it in even if we end up matriculating elsewhere come April 30th?

If you don't mind sharing, was wondering if you ever heard back and if so how long after your interview it took.

Yeah, I posted in here a little while ago when I heard back - I interviewed Sept 16th and got my "you've been waitlisted" letter in the mail on Oct. 19th.

Hey all, decided to post here in a moment of anxiety. IS interviewed 10/21 waiting on my decision. GPA ~ 3.8 MCAT ~30.
Feel free to ask any questions.

Yeah to be safe, do it regardless (unless you 100% know at this point you won't be attending). You'll need that TB test for any school you go to, so go somewhere where you can easily get the records/get the paper for another school signed.

Luckily I just got 2 TB tests a few months ago for work, so I can send in that paperwork! But I'm guessing I might need them again since it'll be > 1 year by the time August 2016 rolls around, so we'll see

Ahha! I totally get the reasoning, but oh boy are these tests a little annoying haha. Have to take time off from work to get them done!

Haha you should take off work anyways! Wont have many true days off from here on out!

Not that I don't fully support taking off time for work 🙂 BUT, CVS Minute Clinic does the TB tests for ~$50 and is open until 8pm or so, depending on your location.

Haha true! But I have already used up all my days off :/

Great info! But ugh, the closest Minute Clinic is farther than my doctor's office lol

You can also search for travel clinics - TB tests requested by third parties (i.e., schools) aren't typically covered by insurance and travel clinics have extended hours for professionals.

Also, anyone know if they're receptive to application inquiries? A part of me is afraid they sent me a rejection (or II i suppose) in the mail and I missed it..

Same here. It's been >3 months since I submitted my secondary. As an IS applicant living only a few blocks away from their campus, I thought I had a good shot at UMB. Quite frustrating to say the least.
I couldn't agree more. Hang in there...there's still plenty of time. And if I've learned anything through this process is that adcoms are unpredictable at best

Ugh..thanks! I was complete at the beginning of August and haven't heard a peep so I'm not really sure what to think...although I'm sure a lot of us are in that boat..

You IS? How are your stats looking?

Folks at UMD are very friendly. I'd contact them if you really want to know. IIs are sent via email, and rejections are sent via mail apparently. Can @New_Slang or @agoron or anyone else back me up on this point?

II was sent via email and portal updated to schedule it. Acceptance sent through snail mail (portal not updated to reflect acceptance). The office is super friendly and responsive, so I imagine you could write a quick note to them asking if there was a status update can't hurt even if it doesn't help.

Non-trad, LizzyM 70-73 with MCAT above their median & GPA below, top 10 ug, strong research, above average clinical experience

I'm sure you'll hear back soon! Hang in there bud

Damn, you're like almost a copy of me. Non-trad, IS, LizzyM 70 with MCAT above their median & GPA below, top 10 ug, strong research, strong clinical, strong teaching/volunteer/leadership

I heard back relatively quickly (see my previous post on this thread) which shows you how unpredictable this process is.

Hold, OOS, Complete late August.
Let's put it this way, I'm a long shot. Cheers and good luck! 🙂

Received the hold status as well. I'm OOS and was really expecting a flat out rejection, so I'm actually relieved they haven't yet

Jumping on the "hold" bandwagon. LizzyM ~68 and complete mid-September. Not too surprised!

Anyone know if people usually get off hold? Is it different IS vs OOS? Really hoping this isn't a death sentence

Is the Hold coming as an email?
You get a "Secondary Application Received" Email and then silence. Portal status doesn't change until you receive II via email. Alternative: rejection via mail

Or a hold email which seems to have been sent out to a lot of us this afternoon.

What exactly does a hold mean? Will they reconsider your application later on in the cycle?

I'm freaking out slightly since I was complete the beginning of September and others have gotten news and I haven't heard a peep.

I'm technically OOS, but have been residing in Maryland for the last year and a half.

Yes, in its own special pile

No news means no bad news.

Then you are OOS, but as we all know UMD is quite friendly to the OOS folks, hang in there!

+1 to the hold pile. Complete mid August

OOS but... I WILL WAIT FOR YOU MARYLAND

Two questions:

1) Is this hold status pre-ii?
2) Anyone willing to PM me what it says?

Two questions:

1) Is this hold status pre-ii?

1) Yes.

2) "The Committee on Admissions at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has made an initial review of your application but has not yet reached a final decision as to whether or not to invite you to interview. Please be assured that this situation is not an unusual one. The limited number of interview slots, the very large number of applicants and the competitive nature of the selection process this year have made many of our decisions very difficult. Your application has been placed on hold.
The Committee will periodically review your credentials and will notify you as soon as a final decision has been reached. At that time you will either be invited to interview or you will be notified that the Committee on Admissions can not consider your application further.
Please keep in mind that this is a year long process. Interviews are conducted at the School of Medicine through the month of March. Therefore, you may not receive definitive notification regarding your status for some time. You are welcome to submit any additional significant information, or updates, in support of your application as you see fit. I assure you that any new information that you submit will be placed in your file. I do ask though that you keep all other inquiries to a minimum so that the Committee on Admissions can complete the task of selecting the next entering freshman class.
I thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland School of Medicine. I also appreciate your patience and wish you the best of luck!"

II here this evening! OOS and got the secondary received email 8/21 so I guess that's when I was complete. They're into February for interview dates for those wondering.

I also got the hold email this afternoon. I'm in state and a nontraditional applicant. Applied late and wasn't listed as complete until 10/9. So I'm still in the game, but it's not looking good for the home team if they are already scheduling interviews for February. I'll cross my fingers for all of us though. Would love to stay in state.

they don't have many spots left since they are already in Feb for interviews...why did they put so many of us on hold? so sad, a flat out rejection might be less painful.
