*crickets* anyone gotten a complete email yet? Submitted secondary 7/19, no movement yet. Hope the cycle is going well for everyone so far!
 
Their portal has all of my documents marked as received but still no contact from them since secondary app invite. Grew up on the Eastern Shore and really hoping for some in-state love!

Last cycle, I got the invitation to interview by e-mail ~ 1.5 weeks after my secondary was marked complete in mid-August. It was my first and hugely relieving.

Does anyone know if Maryland has regional bias for oos? Like are applicants from southeast or midwest at a disadvantage compared to Northeast?

I think Maryland Med definitely has a regional bias, since it's a state school after all, so they give some kind of preference to Maryland residents. But if you look at Class of 2018 stats (http://medschool.umaryland.edu/admissions/our_students.asp), 196 acceptances were offered to MD residents and 140 to non-MD residents. The final class composition is 76% resident, 24% non-resident. The bias is not as unforgiving as at other state schools (some of which are like 99% instate haha).

Otherwise, there are people from almost every region accepted - some from neighboring states like PA, Virginia, Delaware, NJ (the Mid-Atlantic is more represented, since people usually chose to matriculate close to home), and more southern and northern states, to Missouri, to California, etc. You are not at a disadvantage if you apply OOS from any particular region. If you fit UMAB's mission - and your primary application shows it in your experiences - you are not at a disadvantage applying OOS from anywhere.

Is it possible for an oos person to get in state tuition a year into the program? Even if they are currently working their gap year in Maryland?
 
Yeah many people have managed to get in-state status in between first and second year. Some have had a harder time than others and I know one guy got a part time job at a local bar over the summer to have pay stubs in MD. Which really wasn't bad considering all of the money he was saving. I'm not sure what other people did as I am an in-state student but I wouldn't let it shy you away from MD. If you are accepted I would talk to someone in financial aid to see what you would have to do.

Well I'll tell you about first year since that is probably what you're interested in at this point. So during first year you will have a one hour lecture at 8 am and another one at 9 am. Both of these lectures are optional to attend and the presentations are recorded and posted online. If you are in structure & development (Anatomy, histo and embryology class) you will go to cadaver lab and dissect for 2 hours or however long it takes to get done what you need to do that day. If you are not in anatomy you go to "small group". In small group the class is broken into maybe 12-15 different sections and you work through problem sets or discuss topics, these small groups are led by an attending physician typically and are mandatory.

So from noon on the day is yours, but in reality you will be studying haha.

As far as traditional vs non-traditional, I don't feel comfortable speaking for the entire class really but I do think most people are Bio and straight through from undergrad. I don't think this is the overwhelming majority by any means and I know a lot of non-traditionals too (myself included)

Hate to be pessimistic, but I'd be surprised if II came out for at least another 2 weeks. They haven't even sent "under review" emails yet to applicants whose files are complete. Maryland is known to review files later than other schools. In fact, a few years ago, I believe that II didn't even come out until September. But who knows, maybe they decided not to send "under review" emails this year. I hope II come out sooner rather than later, but we'll just have to see.

Sorry that was a few years ago and I applied/was complete/interviewed in a few schools and they all run together in my head
 
Yeah, it seems like they're definitely later than others. I've had all my materials in since 7/19 and haven't gotten a complete email or anything.
 
Not to disrupt the beauty of all these +n's but did everyone receive a complete or a secondary received email? I know they have my letters but I haven't turned my residency form in yet. Would that hold me back from completion?
 
The email for me says "We have received your second stage application and begun to process it. If you have not had your letters of recommendation forwarded to AMCAS please do so as soon as possible. All letters of recommendation must be received by January 15th. This letter is NOT stating that our office has not received your letters. To check the status of your letters please log into your secondary application using the same login and password and click on the ‘Status’ tab.

Please mail your In-State Classification form to the Office of Admissions, HSF I, 685 W. Baltimore Street, Suite 190, Baltimore, MD 21201. In-State Classification forms will be forwarded to the Office of Records and Registration. If you have questions regarding Maryland residency, contact the Office of Records and Registration at 410-706-7480. The In-State Classification form can be found on the secondary application website and under FAQs on the Admissions website."

Which I believe answers your question

No, I don't think that will hold you back. That's most likely for tuition purposes, especially since they can see your state on AMCAS. If you got the email above, they should be processing and reviewing your application.
 
It may be for interviews though... I received an invite last November, but the only date available to me was February (everyone I interviewed with was OOS). I'm pretty sure IS people who received interviews around the same time as me could book an earlier date. Not positive though.
 
As for your chances of getting in, I do think @agoron is correct. Maryland specifically said they aren't choosing you just bc you're IS vs OOS after the interview

Residency might have some bearing just because it's a public school, though. It seems like they extend about the same amount of acceptances to IS vs OOS applicants, but there are a lot less IS applicants, so ultimately there is a higher % accepted and IS students make up about 70% of the class (gotta love the in-state tuition). But I don't think not having the residency form in right this second will prevent you from getting looked at and considered equally 🙂.

this is me paraphrasing from orientation week:
People receive in-state status after 1st year if you can prove you did reside in Maryland for a year (ostensibly your MS1). so if you are entering in August 2016, immediately change your Driver's license, car registration to Maryland and register to vote here before or in August. You also must get involved with the community outside of the school (so that the claim "you're only here to attend school" may be rebutted). Overall, this is not different of a policy than most other schools (and very forgiving compared to a state like Michigan). The financial aid officer stated that about 100 OOS re-classifications happened last year (this is campus-wide in Baltimore, and includes other schools).

I can't say what a typical day is like yet, but there are a few non-traditional students in the class, including some who have worked other careers for many years and have families, have done post-baccs and have taken one or three gap years. There are many traditional 'straight from undergrad' kids, but also lots of non-trads. Overall, it's a well balanced class.

There are also many more OOS students here than the year prior.

II=interview invite, not secondary....

Perhaps you mean you "scheduled" your interview? You can't "submit" an II 😛

Some advice for you guys... This is a really long and drawn out process, I wouldn't put much weight into when your interview actually is or the stats of people that get invites before or after you. I remember going to an interview at Cinci in early august a few years ago and thought surely I was golden-waitlisted. I got my interview at maryland in late Feb - accepted! As hard as it is to relax I'd try to focus more on enjoying your life before it ends in medical school. As long as you have all of your materials in, this is a very long waiting game.

Very true! The amount of time between steps varies from student to student. I applied to UMD for the 2015 cycle later than others. Submitted secondary September 11 last year, got the application received notice September 16, and received the II September 19. I interviewed November 4 and was waitlisted (upper half).

This cycle I'm trying again! Submitted secondary August 8, last LOR received August 10. Received Application received notice August 21 just like many others.

GPA: 3.7-3.8, MCAT 32 (P11B11V10), and IS
I think I got the secondary in at the right time when they were reviewing. Just trying to show that there is no exact window between secondary and II.
