2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha, we'll just have to see. I'm assuming they are recruiting the high MCAT people in the first few rounds to get them in and set up with scholarships. I'm only slightly above median so I'm not counting on anything. I would hope that after having four acceptance dates all the 36+ or 520+ applicants would already be in and the rest of us will hopefully stand a better chance. Also I don't get any prestige points for my undergrad and I felt my interview was mediocre at best, so it may take until March or even May when the list starts moving!

Hopefully one or both of us gets in Wednesday 🙂

They told us top 30 at our interview! Also, I couldn't find anything online but does anyone know if they have scholarships specifically for MD/MPH students? I gave up my MD only spot a few days back so it'll be MD/MPH for me 🙂

II today! I have to say, this was pretty unexpected. I guess I'd resigned myself to the 3 I got and was pretty happy with how things turned out. Not relishing another trip down to Miami, especially when I've already been waitlisted at FIU, but I'd be lying if Miami wasn't a really attractive choice. Oddly enough, my secondary page isn't allowing me to schedule an interview date yet; there's just nothing there about it. I'll give it the better part of the day, though. They said I have about a week to decide if I want the interview, as it's getting later in the interview season. I'll post which dates are available when I can see them.

Does anyone have any details about the number of interviews given vs. admitted students? UCF was very wonderfully transparent about it all and I'd love if someone knew how Miami does things. Thanks!

still silence from miami. have they sent out most of the invites already? many more left in the pipeline?
My status has been under review for a couple of months now. Haven't received a score or anything. Really interested in Miami so I hope there are still some left!

Right there with you, been submitted since mid-July and still haven't been scored.

Does anyone have a copy of the MD/MPH match list or are there any students who interviewed/currently attend the MD/MPH program able to answer questions?

Got informed that my background check as an accepted student was just requested - anybody else??

Hello. This is a parent of a future/potential MD applicant. Wondering whether anyone has answers to the following questions.

- How many "Merit Scholarships" are awarded to the freshmen MD class?
- For Merit Scholarships, Is "UG GPA and MCAT" are the only criteria? If yes, may we know the past average GPA/MCAT scores of those scholarship winners.

As far as I know none of the statistical information regarding scholarships is made public. Based on information I read on previous year's threads I believe scholarship evaluations are more wholistic than just GPA and MCAT, but that's just my personal impression.

First of all: Congrats to all the recently accepted students and II recipients!!!

I second what @BioEngMD said here. I don't know if that information is made public. If it is I don't know where to find it.

Also, scholarship evaluation is definitely more holistic than just the numbers. I know someone who received a large scholarship from UMMSM, and while their grades are terrific, there are people in the class with higher numbers that got nothing. It's completely up to the scholarship committee, and I don't think there is any specific magical formula that can guarantee a scholarship. However, you should definitely fill out the applications for diversity scholarships and need based grants if they apply to you or there's no chance of you receiving those. Fortunately, there is nothing to fill out for merit scholarships. Every student is automatically considered for one.
can anyone who has received a scholarship here comment on the amount?
The amounts vary - last year and years before they went up in 5k increments, all the way to full tuition. Miami's grants/scholarships are tuition restricted, so they will never exceed that (and won't cover COL).

A question: If applicants are invited to interview based on the score they had, does it mean people who are interviewed later just had a lower score relative to the earlier interviewees? Would that mean my interview could be more "important", for lack of a better word, than someone else's, for an admission decision?

Also, can any other naturalized U.S. citizens comment on the citizenship number thing they want? My family was naturalized when I was young, but my parents unfortunately don't have mine. I had to give them my passport information on the secondary, which they said was sufficient but I would need the actual citizenship number at some point. Does it have to be my own? The email they sent me about it implied that my parents' numbers might suffice.

I'm feeling slightly hopeful for today...but also think it's pretty unlikely to come off the WL today but can't hurt to hope I guess! It'll be the 5th decision cycle for me today. Has anyone been taken off the WL yet?

It's on your certificate of citizenship. If you've lost that, you should get a new one anyway BC it's important! 🙂

You can pay for a new naturalization certificate at USCIS. Keep it for your records. However I recommend just using your passport. Most people accept that.

Hey guys, when I go onto CaneLink, it says my application is incomplete? And when I go onto the status page, it says "Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee." Safe to say I can count this school out if I haven't even been scored yet?

That is just normal. When did you submit?

Hi guys, sorry if this has already been answered, but I just got an interview invite. How long does it take from when you request your interview dates to when they give you your final date to interview? Thanks!

I just tried to sign-on to Canelink and got a message saying my CaneID is disabled. I have previously signed on with success- has anyone else had this issue?

I had same exact thing happen and I had to call the IT department to get it fixed. Kind of a nuisance as it happened twice, now it seems to be ok.

Hi Everyone: I received notice today that I was put on the Alternate List for the MD program. I am waiting to hear back about the MD/MPH program on 1/20. My question is: is it common for people to be accepted into MD/MPH program and be wait-listed for MD program. My heart is set on the MD/MPH program, just curious if I still have a chance! Thank you.

I was notified yesterday that I was accepted to the MD/MPH program and an alternate for the MD program, which I wouldn't go to over the MD MPH anyway haha. It was kind of funny -- they called me first and told me I was into both, and then called me back and was like "Oops, jk. Just the MD MPH" a la Steve Harvey.

Same deal - accepted MD/MPH, alternate list MD. (Except they didn't have to do the second call Steve Harvey style.)

Do you know around when merit scholarships are handed out?

Wait does this mean you're eligible to get just your Masters and are on hold for your MD? Or you're admitted to Miami only if you do an MPH as well?

The latter. It is acceptance into the combined MD/MPH program. It is alternate for the MD only program.

When you apply to both the MD and the combined MD/MPH program, possible acceptances are:
a) MD only, but not MD/MPH
b) MD/MPH, but not MD only
c) MD only and MD/MPH (you can choose which you elect to pursue)

My situation is currently category b).

Ah I see, thanks for clarifying. Im on the Alternate List as well for MD and I really wish we could see our rank so we know if there was a chance or not.

So according to the hubspring page, the following remaining dates are when we could hear back:

01/20
02/03
02/17
03/09
04/06

With a potential date in late April, if the 2015 thread is anything to go by. I'm interviewing on 01/15, so most likely I'll hear back on 02/17, and not 02/03, right?

Also, could I get some advice with regards to preparing for the interview? My last one was a while ago, so I've been out of the game for a bit. I have UF and Miami coming up soon, and want to make sure I put my best foot forward. As I understand it, it's an hour-long interview with someone who scored our application, correct? Could someone who has interviewed recently comment on how it went? For now, I'm mostly using the interview feedback page to get a feel for the kinds of questions and stress level. Thanks!

Congrats to those of you who have been accepted and have been offered an interview! Do you guys mind sharing your stats if that's not too obnoxious asking?

Sure, I don't mind. 4.0/36, >2000 research hours, about 100 volunteer hours, some shadowing, several hundred TA hours, and some other stuff.

You'll have to let us know what type of scholarship you eventually get! I am sure they will be offering you a hefty amount of money to get you there!

Haha, you really think so? Man, wouldn't that be amazing. I'd be honored enough with just an acceptance. Well, I interview on Friday, so wish me luck!

Haha, whoops I thought you were already accepted. But with your stats and EC I'm sure that's just a matter of time.

Oops, I didn't read the post above properly. I only got an II, @poloboy. And thanks for the encouragement! I'm sitting at 1 acceptance, 2 WL, 2 II's yet to come, at this point I'm not sure if I'm just bad at interviewing or if it's something else that's getting me waitlisted. Lol. Fingers crossed. Shame I'll have to wait so long for a response, though! 😛

Has anyone sent updates? I sent an update about a month ago and never heard anything back. Thought Miami was just a school that didn't acknowledge updates but I just got an email last week acknowledging my last update. Are they normally this slow or has my application slipped through the cracks? I still haven't been scored yet either, despite being complete in August. Wondering if I should call to inquire.

I sent an update a few days ago and haven't received acknowledgement. I also was complete at the end of August and have not yet been scored

If y'all have not received acknowledgement of updates via email, you can try calling the admissions office directly and asking them if they received your update email. However, understand that the admissions office is always very busy, so don't get frustrated by the long wait times. Good luck to everyone this semester! If you end up interviewing these next few months, you might have the chance to meet me on an interview tour or lunch lol.
