2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

Definitely use Uber. Better than cabs in the 305

I agree with this but just a fair warning, idk if anyone is doing this but if you're planning on flying into Ft. Lauderdale...all Uber and Lyft services were suspended in Broward County last week. You can still be dropped off there but you won't be able to be picked up anywhere in Broward/Ft. Lauderdale

Edit: as far as I know it still works in Miami!

I'm renting a car, and staying at the hotel the school says is closest (good rate too!) so if anyone on the 28th needs a ride, pm me. Will also be driving to the regional campus after everything is done on the 28th.

How long would you say it takes to be reviewed? I've been "under review" for nearly a month @BioEngMD

I don't think there's any real standard. From the posts I saw last cycle I got the impression that applications weren't necessarily reviewed in the order they were submitted, so it's hard to tell. It's still extremely early in the cycle though so try not to worry about it.

Anyone know how they judge the adversity category? It's unfortunate there is no diversity or adversity essay to express stuff like that. I didn't really mention much in regards to that in my primary. :/

Can someone chime in about transportation from hotel --> the campus? I'm thinking about staying in a nearby hotel and just calling a taxi but I'm not sure...
the springhill suites has a free shuttle to and from MIA and the hospital... no need to rent a car or call a taxi

Try staying with a student host if you want to save some cash and learn more about UM and Miami. Most of the students live in Brickell, which can be accessed from the MIA airport via the Metro ($2.25 each way, so probably a lot cheaper than taking a cab or even using Uber).

do you have to select MD and MPH program on the primary application or can you just do it on the secondary?
I selected MD only but now want to apply to both.

You designate on the secondary and just apply MD only on AMCAS.

Keep in mind if you do MDMPH you can't drop the MPH - you have to complete it or they would t give you an MD

Does anyone know Miami's application update policies, specifically in regards to sending additional letters? I can't seem to find the info on their website

is the MD/MPH different in competitiveness compared to the MD ?

Like are you accepted into the MD first, then the MPH OR it's a separate admissions process with a different applicant pool?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, just curious

It's technically a different applicant pool of people who designated MD/MPH on their secondary. However, there's likely a decent amount of overlap since they allow you to apply to both the MD and MD/MPH if you'd like. The number of students actually in the program is relatively high compared to some others I've seen but I'd imagine it's similar competitiveness to the MD program but maybe a little more selective to make sure you fit well. The program webpage has some interesting stats. For example, last year's entering MCAT was a 32 but it didn't say whether that was median or average. Hope this helps!

MD/MPH is a separate application, and is less selective stats wise than MD (for class of 2019, average Gpa/mcat was 3.78/33.9 for md and 3.64/32 for md/mph), though the overall acceptance rates are probably similar across both programs. However the md/mph program tends to look for more unique aspects in applicants, and they usually have more non-traditional students in the class.

How did you guys name the prereqs. The example gives the course number, the instructions say course name

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for.

Is there a specific source you got those numbers from?

They announce these numbers every year during 1st yr orientation, and then put them up on UMMSM's admission site under Class Profile. If you look there now they may still have the numbers from last year's entering class.

Hey guys can you check my post a couple of spots up? It's the last thing I wanted to check on before I submit

Did you enter classes as CHEM 102 or General Chemistry 2

I did "CHEM 102"

Congrats! When was your app complete/under review if I may ask?

Submitted/complete on 7/22. I noticed it got the "has been reviewed" status change today, and then like half an hour later got the invite!

Awesome! Congrats that's very exciting!! 🙂

My very first II!!! MD. Beyond excited. I was complete 7/15. LizzyM ~ 70. OOS. So I selected the interview dates, are they supposed to email me and tell me which date I am interviewing? And how soon?
Yes you'll get an e-mail - I got mine later the same day.

For everyone who has received an II so far, what was your "has been reviewed" status? Did it mention a score? Thanks!

Mine does not mention a score, just that it has been reviewed and selected for an interview.

Hmm ok, did it change to that immediately from under review? I'm just asking cuz last year some mentioned scores. congrats on the interview btw

Thank you! And to my knowledge there was nothing between those two statuses, but I didn't check it until I got the interview email so I may have missed something!

Too soon to make extreme predictions like that! Chin up, it's not even mid August! My status was on "has been reviewed" for 3.5 weeks before I got my II

Good point!

My status could have been on "has been reviewed" for longer than I noticed, I've just been more meticulous about checking SDN than my actual application portals...woops 😛

And from last year's thread, it looks like it's a good status to have - there's also a hold status, which means you're less likely to get II... (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Got scheduled for Oct 19th and 20th 🙂 Would someone else doing the MD and MD/MPH mind shooting me a message? I am struggle busing on how to plan things out 🙂 Thanks!

So... I got an email on 8/4 that says my photo was received but i finally submitted my secondary today and the portal says my photo has not been received.... does it take a while for the picture and secondary to come together or should I call?

Same thing happened to me so I emailed them and they simply asked I send it via email and then attached it to my file. They were very helpful and it only took a span of one or two hours from the time I originally e mailed them.
