2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've gotta imagine that just goes at the bottom of all the invites so people dont delay and pick a date
Eeeek not to cause any stress, but my II on 8/11 didn't have that. They had "If you wish to decline this offer or if your plans change and you cannot keep your appointment please let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer the interview slot to another applicant and reschedule your visit."

HOWEVER -> a friend of mine who is currently an MD/MPH didn't get her II until October last year. So I really think it's more of a "hurry up and pick your date" type of thing.

Ya there were a million dates available when I went to schedule. The soonest was like September 22nd or something. they had slots available all the way through to Decemeber

Interviews are just getting started. I think they go through March or maybe even later, and interview invites will continue to go out throughout the majority of that time. I'm sure that's just part of the generic II e-mail they'll use throughout the entire cycle.

MD II just now! IS with LizzyM of 67-69.

When they say "As we are nearing the end of the application cycle, we ask that you respond to this email within one week." Does that mean they want me to actually email them back as well as enter my preferences in the website?
yeah i didnt email, just submitted preferences.

Quick question, do you think UM is receptive to in the area emails? I'm an IS applicant and am actually still "under review" with no priority score yet. Is it worth a shot?

Welp! I'd like to retract that question then lol

Just out of curiosity, how long has it taken to receive an interview offer after the review of your application has been complete?

someone please reply when Miller gives you a date after you have selected preferences.

My status changed to "Your Application has been reviewed by the MD/PhD Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants who are shortlisted for an interview will be contacted via email to schedule an interview. Our interview dates are November 1st, December 13th and January 31st, 2014." Does everyone's status end up doing this regardless of whether they end up with an interview or is this an indication of one way or another.

@ADW1994
I got the same notification today as well. I don't think it's worth reading into honestly, it seems too generic. But probably (hopefully) we'll hear if we're getting an interview or not soon.

Hopefully we will get positive news soon! 🙂

anyone know if these folks are receptive to in the area calls?

Interviews are open file. My interviewer asked me to go more in depth for each thing I had on my secondary. Then transitioned to standard interview questions including ethics. Took about 1 hour total.
I really like how you as students are willing to answer questions of candidates for your medical school. Some of my friends who got into medical school stopped caring about all their Pre-Med friends. Not cool as each one of them had hundreds of people help them get there. Thanks for staying cool. I really want to go to a school with kind, helpful, and caring students and if most Miami students are like you two, then it may just be that school. Just a couple weeks till my interview!

Bro, everyone here is super chill. We'd love to have you here if you're super chill and fun and stuff. We work hard, but we also play really hard too. So I hope your application cycle goes well!

Alright, for the pre-reqs on the secondary...
The instructions say to put the course name. But in the example they use the course number (Eng 101)..
So for mine.. should I put English composition I, or should I put Engl 101.??

I put ENGL 101 (and I got an II so that should be good). Good luck! Miami's secondary is a beast.

Does anyone know how to contact potential student hosts? I decided it would be better to just stay in the city rather than drive in from my family's house, I heard traffic is terrible.

if your family's house is in dade or broward county you're fine. palm beach county is a bit far.

Is it still worth submitting the secondary to them or is it too late?
Their essay prompt for what major clinical experience has influenced your choice to study medicine.... it says not to repeat the AMCAS primary.
Does that mean talk about something different ? Or just put a different spin on the topic (my AMCAS primary was my major clinical experience that influenced my pursuit of studying medicine)?

careful with entering your preferences on the website... mine didn't go through and I got stuck with an interview 2 months later than I listed

I submitted my primary significantly later in the cycle than now. It's not ideal, you're starting off at a significant disadvantage, but you still have a chance! Sell yourself hard and you might get an interview 🙂

You could do either - they just don't want you to copy and paste your AMCAS.

I wouldn't worry about it. Last year a few people had a problem with the system not recording their preferences for interview dates; they would select dates and then it would be blank when they went back and looked afterwards, so they had to call the admissions office to schedule their interview. I would assume they fixed it since nobody's mentioned it this year, but you can double check your application portal and make sure your selected dates show up if you want the extra peace of mind.

Darn. It's going to be raining the whole time I'm in Miami for my interview next week. So much for my vacation. Sigh 🙁

The way weather works in Miami, it never rains continuously more than a few hours. It basically just swings radically between sunny or pouring rain a few times a day lol

I chose 3 dates on the website and they didn't save. When days went by without any notification of which day I would receive, I logged back in and it was blank like when I first began. I called admissions and they said it was a glitch in the system and they never got my chosen dates. I ended up interviewing much later than the 3 dates I chose.
