Alternate list..and the wait continues.... >_>

Zilch, and no status change. I'm assuming that means reject pile, hah.

I don't think my status ever changed after "a final decision has been made", so I wouldn't read too much into that. All remaining correspondence was by email and phone.

Do you know if alternate list moves with each decision day or does it exist outside of decision days?

Accepted to MD!!!

They said I will likely hear from MD-MPH later :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting: I really hope I do, the program looks amazing and fits my interests so well.

For current students, are any of you interested in psychiatry/behavioral health or can speak to opportunities at UM to pursue that from a public health perspective? (And yes, I know Im crazy and I should just enjoy this for now).

Timely comment, alternate list email just now. Ain't even mad, gave it a good shot. Good luck to everyone else! 🙂

Last cycle we were told that they accept the top however many people with the most points at each decision date; so it would be on one of those days. I do remember a couple people reporting getting off the waitlist within a month or two, but the vast majority of movement seemed to occur in the typical April-May waitlist movement timeframe.

Thanks, staying hopeful!

On occasion, members of the committee request to re-ballot applicants from one acceptance cycle to the next so as to grade them differently. If you were told that a decision would be made by x-date, and no decision was given to you on that date, then chances are you were re-balloted.

Alternate list! The student host and two other students that I talked while I was there for the interview got accepted from the alternate list. I truly would like to go to Miller as I feel it would be a great fit for me and for the school. Good luck everyone !

PS: Congrats to all the people accepted 🙂

alternate for both MD and MD/MPH...pretty bummed out, esp for the MD/MPH 🙁

Did your email correspondence specifically say you were waitlisted for both? My message only said I was placed on alternate for the MD/MPH so should I still be waiting on a decision for MD?

yeah mine said for both. if yours only said for one, i hope you have good news coming from the other!

It seems like a they alternate a good number of people who actually want to go to Miller LOL

So I got the "final decision" status change this morning for the MD program. I interviewed for the MD/MPH as well, although no status change yet there... I didn't get any correspondence today. Any theories or information about what that might mean?

They do 🙁. Approximately 10,000 applicants and only 150 + 48 spots. I don't envy the hard decisions the admissions committee have to make. BUT as my good friend @BioEngMD said above:
I think there is usually a decent amount of waitlist movement, so don't lost hope! You can help your case by sending updates, letters of interest, etc. if Miami is one of your top choices.
The waitlist is NOT a nicer form of rejection. There is movement and it's a good place to be. For those of you who really want to go here and got waitlisted: Keep your chin up 🙂.

Is this generally a good thing?

Hey guys, I felt like crunching some numbers, but am totally not sure if I'm doing this right (simple math confuses me =/). So according to their slideshow presentation, they interviewed 617 people right? And since they accept 20 outright at each adcom meeting, 200/617 (there were 10 dates) is the odds of getting an outright acceptance before waitlist movement begins. They ended up handing out 369 acceptances, which means 169 came from the waitlist movement. Does that mean your odds of getting off the waitlist is 169/417 or 169/617? I don't know if I'm supposed to include the 200 from outright acceptances..because they obviously don't count in the "alternate list" pool at the end of it all..

Anyway, just trying to do something to console myself I guess.. =/

I think there is a large misconception here. If you are currently on the alternate list you could be pulled off this list at any of the notification dates according to the dean on my interview date. So the math isn't that simple. 200 of the outright acceptances there are some that come off of the alternate list. Correct me if I am wrong @midevilrabbi !

Edit: After digging through a few profiles on MDapps this event seems pretty rare.

I thought it was pass fail but they report quartiles when they give you a letter for residency.

You get a number grade and then it says P next to it like 92P and at the end of each module they release histograms with the spread of the grades with the mean, median and mode. In your Deans letter they release all those histograms which nobody looks at, and they also discuss your quartile. Many programs list your quartile in your deans letter, few schools are truly pass fail without true indication of your rank.

I don't have my interview day slides on me to check, but I remember that the 4 year MD/MPH curriculum is fairly new. Isn't there still the MD/MPH program which you apply for once you're already in and it adds on a 5th year? Or am I making this up...just trying to see what all the options are...

Does anyone know if we will have an overall higher score than someone who interviews in the spring since they obviously interviewed later? I mean, I'm sure there are those cases of people that submit later and have excellent stats so they get an auto-II but in general, the process for II invites starts with individuals with higher initial scores, right?

Can anyone speak to the waitlist movement for MD/MPH? Is it comparable to that of the MD waitlist?

Cannot confirm, but I would agree with this. UM themselves says they interview in order of application scores, and if the interview is not an overweighted portion of it, then the simple answer is yes. UCF has a similar process, but they keep you updated along the way of where you stand and this was my same thought and it has held true as I have moved up the list gradually as interviews have gone on.

Thank you for that. Just wanted to be sure that I wasn't missing something in my thought process..

@Ace Khalifa I was reviewing last year's thread and you were such a good sport. I would have lost it seeing damn near everyone accepted from the waitlist haha
Haha you can't lose hope or else it's all over. Attitude is everything, even more so when you're actually in med school. So just be patient if you haven't been accepted yet. I look forward to (hopefully) meeting all of you next year (and possibly second look)!
