2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just a little under a week to go until Feb 3rd... Anyone else anxiously checking their app status for the "final decision" message? Haha. I interviewed earlier this month, around the 15th, so that's the earliest I can hear back. With about 5 acceptance dates left, there's a decent chance I'll be one of those 100 accepted, right? A guy can hope. 😛

Does any one know if Miami accepts update letters pre interview? Or if they are receptive of any updates pre interview?

they do accept update letters! I sent mine to [email protected]. just a heads up, they take a while to confirm the update - so don't worry if you dont hear back from them. I got confirmation about a month after.

Thanks! Hoping to hear something from Miami... Would love to get out of the chilly northeast...

Received confirmation that they got my update just now, but still haven't been scored

Edit: I called the admissions office, and the lady said they don't update your portal when you're scored, only when a decision has been made. This contradicts what I've seen on this thread. Has anyone gotten an ii without being scored first? Also interviews are offered through mid March.

I never got an email about scoring before I got my II. They might have updated that in the portal but I never checked that after submitting secondary (figured they email me if I got an II)

I found the Miami match list on their website, but I cannot find one that is for MD/MPH grads only. Has anyone found a match list that separates their matches by program?

There was an excel posted last year, but the link no longer works....it's hard to find a lot of MD/MPH related info.

I went through the capstone project examples and looked up the class of 2015 MD/MPH grads. The only ones I found went to FM, ob/gyn, peds, and IM residencies.

Finally, 6 months later, an II. Turning it down, hope an SDNer gets it. Good Luck to all looking to move to Miami.
Watching too much Dexter lately, Miami sort of creeps me out these days.
Well congrats! Getting an II from Miller is a huge feat! Are you IS or OOS?

I emailed the school asking for it after my admissions offer, and they sent the MDMPH specific list just a few hours later

Can anyone explain this discrepancy?:

MSAR:
OOS Interviewed: 194
OOS Matriculated: 113
IS Interviewed: 318
IS Matriculated: 86

UMiami Website Class Profile (MD Program):
OOS Interviewed: 343
OOS Matriculated: 86
IS Interviewed: 234
IS Matriculated: 61

I know that the latter is only the class profile of Miami, but why does their website say they interview so many more people than does the MSAR? Anyone have an idea on what may be more accurate?

I believe they have increased the number of interviews offered over the last few years in favor of higher post-interview selectivity. If I remember correctly, last cycle they said they intended to interview somewhere in the range of 600-700 applicants, but I'm not sure if that was just for the MD program or both MD and MD/MPH. I would guess that the UMMSM website is more accurate (since it shows a higher total) and MSAR is outdated.

I'd say MSAR

is it really that bad? i'm considering moving to the northeast for medical school lol.

I've been in the Northeast for the past 17 years (and 24 years overall), and I can't stand the cold. Also, every so often you get a horrendously bad winter (last winter for example). Like...end of times bad. So much snow you can barely get out of your house -- enough snow to turn your car into a giant snow mound and make it impossible to get anywhere. Oh and don't forget in the northeast you also have to deal with ice, wind chills, bitter cold, an endlessly long winter, a short fall, a nearly non-existent spring, and a hot and a humid summer.

To this day, I wonder -- what on earth were the pilgrims thinking when they decided to live in such an unbearably harsh climate?? I mean the climate of the northeast makes the climate in southern California seem like the best climate known to man. It's not even close -- and southern California isn't even Hawaii or the Caribbean or some other tropical resort location.

I can tell you without a doubt that when I move out of the northeast, I'm going to do everything I can to not move back.

Weather wimp. Born in Palo alto, but grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan Remember what that weather will cost you - - huge Cost of living and population density. I can afford to travel to nice spots in the winter.

If you don't value year-round nice weather, that's on you. You can call me whatever you like. For me, nice weather is worth it.

I don't know how to reconcile the interview data from MSAR and Miami. First I thought one was only considering MD and the other MD/MPH, but that isn't right either. Info provided from the Interview Day said that last cycle they interviewed a total of 617 applicants and 369 were accepted (they didn't break down IS/OS or MD vs MD/MPH). I realize this statement doesn't quite add up to the posted data you found, but it's close enough.

I also recall student tour guides on the Interview Day telling me that the MD/MPH cohort takes computerized exams but that MD students still take paper exams since they don't have enough computers (though they are breaking ground on a new building which should solve this in a few years).

Would I be ok flying out of PBI at 5pm on the day of the regional campus interview? Don't wanna push my timing!

Regional tour was scheduled to end by 3pm, but we were finished by 2:30. The last part of the day is an anonymous survey regarding the interview experience (which you could skip if you had to). You'll have ample time though given the airport's proximity and the fact that when I went it was completely vacant.

do any current med students/applicants know how possible it is to stay with a student host? I sent the host program an email earlier this week(no response), and my interview is on the 8th and 9th. Should I call? I assume they're just really busy.

I didn't hear back until a few days before my interview.

Our SG rep will get back to you after this weekend most likely. All of us 1st years are currently at the Florida Keys for our big health fair, and we all had a final exam to study for this past week. Sorry you've had to wait lol.

Don't worry, there are always student hosts to stay with. I used to have this job or arranging hosts for applicants and I was never not able to place someone 😉

Awesome thanks for those responses guys!

I don't want to put too much emphasis on US News, but as someone who is interested in primary care can someone expand on Miami's rank not being reported? I would imagine there are so many great opportunities given the community and Jackson alone, but wondering if a current student could elaborate! Thanks!

So according to the hubspring page, the following remaining dates are when we could hear back:

01/20
02/03
02/17
03/09
04/06

With a potential date in late April, if the 2015 thread is anything to go by. I'm interviewing on 01/15, so most likely I'll hear back on 02/17, and not 02/03, right?

Also, could I get some advice with regards to preparing for the interview? My last one was a while ago, so I've been out of the game for a bit. I have UF and Miami coming up soon, and want to make sure I put my best foot forward. As I understand it, it's an hour-long interview with someone who scored our application, correct? Could someone who has interviewed recently comment on how it went? For now, I'm mostly using the interview feedback page to get a feel for the kinds of questions and stress level. Thanks!

Thanks!

Hey guys. My application was scored all the way back at the end of July and I haven't received an interview invite. Is it safe to say my score was not good?

Actually, I think they told us 30 when I interviewed there.
I'm guessing they did 20 earlier in the year because a lot of people are saying that but they did say 30 when I was there earlier this month.

Yeah, so actually I also heard 30 on interview day, but because of last year's cycle and what most people were saying earlier this cycle, I thought perhaps they were mistaken and meant 20. I guess if multiple people have been hearing 30, then they must have increased how many they take at each decision date.

What do you guys mean by scored?
I only get this message:
Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. At this time, a final decision has not been reached on your application.

Mine has said this for the past few months:
Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

^I assume that this is what people mean when they say that they haven't been scored yet
