2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

Does anyone know what the remaining decision days are? Is it realistic at this point to hope for an acceptance from UM? I found out on Thursday that I was placed on the alternate list, so I'm basically having a nervous meltdown right now b/c I've been waitlisted at 3 of the 4 schools I've interviewed at (and rejected at the other)...

Sorry for the pressure. I sincerely hope it works out for you somewhere.

According to the Miami interview app, there are three more acceptance dates, Feb 17, March 9, and April 6.

Thanks! And it's cool. Just bummed out that I found out about 3 of these schools this week, so the wound is kinda fresh.

Also, quirky question... What's the reptile situation in Miami? I'm from WA, and I'm not a huge reptile fan... (snakes scare the living daylights out of me). 🙁

I'm a Miami native. I hardly ever see snakes, and if I do, they're harmless little garter snakes. You only have to worry about large snakes if you live near the Everglades (a few idiots will buy snakes from South America on the black market and release them there when they get too big to keep as a pet). But there are a TON of these little lizards called anoles. They're harmless tho and kinda cute tbqh. You might also see a few large-ish iguanas, but they're extremely docile and run away from you if you approach them.

There's 3 more decision dates (Feb 17, Mar 9, and April 6), but if you look at last year's thread, a substantial number of people got accepted off the alternate list after the last date once people began withdrawing their acceptances. So chin up 🙂 there's still much more hope than you think

Yea movement was crazy in May of last year so remain hopeful. Good luck in your cycle.

Tell that to my classmates living on the 12th floor of Dominion Tower haha.

Honestly, there's no reason to live there. There are better deals, better buildings with more amenities and closer to "life".

So I am interviewing on Friday. I was wondering what the consensus is on Letters of Intent. Should I email them before my interview? Do I bring it in person? Should I just express my intent to matriculate to my interviewer? Thanks

Based on my understanding of letters of intent, I would only send one if you are placed on the school's waitlist.

You can send a thank you letter after your interview in which you emphasize that you are very interested in the program.

Has anyone been scored recently? I would literally be happy with a rejection notice at this point...

+1. I Submitted second week of August and my portal still says: "Your Application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the Admissions Committee." haha. There's NO way... right?

When I sent an email confirming my spot in the alternate list, I got no reply back. Is this normal, or should I e-mail again later?

When I replied to accept and acceptance email, they took over a week to get back to me. Since then I have sent two questions to the admissions office via email two and three weeks ago and I have not received a reply to either.

I went through and read the Miller thread from last year and people were receiving interviews in march still, so dont look down I got an II only last week.
So they're still giving out IIs??

They've taken 2-3 weeks to respond to most inquiries/confirm update letters and whatnot earlier in the cycle, but because of the holidays I'm guessing they are a little more behind now. I just called the office yesterday to see if my update sent on 1/14 had been uploaded to my file yet, and it had not been. May or may not be a separate entity doing this, but just fyi.

They do send you a confirmation email of you being on the alternate list, however. I would call the office to confirm.

Bring it up verbally during the interview! No need for actual letters right now.

Wait, are those the exact words? Mine says that my application is under review...

Mine says "Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine." So . . . maybe there's a status before that about being complete. I don't know. It's been so long since I heard from this school...

Ooh okay, thanks. I just received a confirmation e-mail just now.

Has anyone been able to do the deposit yet? I called them a couple of weeks ago, and they said they were behind the Dec 1 date given in the acceptance letter, but I'm starting to worry.....

So the weirdest thing happened. I tried to create a caneID. I got the ID but no password was provided. Did you or do you know anyone who ran into the same ordeal?

I have done nothing with the caneID system... Are we supposed to?

EDIT: Whoops, nevermind. Found it in the acceptance letter. Says it's not due until mid-May.

Your Temporary Password is MMDD-Aa. This is the first two digits of your birth month followed by the day and the first two characters of your last name.

Yeah, definitely didn't get those instructions on any form of correspondence with them lol....but alas, it worked, thank you!

That's totally normal. I emailed them on Thursday last week about the alternate list and received the reply today.

Recently got an II here for MD & MD/MPH! Complete in August 🙂 if you are interviewing for both programs is it one interview per day or just one interview total?
It's just one interview. I'm a first year MD, but I recently hosted someone interviewing for both MD and MD/MPH. They only had to do one interview.

does anyone know if they sent any pre-II rejections? or do they wait till the end of interview season to do so :/

I think they wait til the end but I'm not completely sure. But don't lose hope! It's not over! Be positive everybody!

The MMDD-Aa password format was not working for me, and I recieved this error message:
"You do not have security questions and answers on file and unfortunately you will not be able to change your password online. For additional assistance, please contact the UMIT Service Desk via email at [email protected] or via phone at 305-284-6565, option 1."

The UMIT Service desk was extremely friendly, helpful, and quickly helped me resolve the problem. I especially appreciated that the 305-284-6565 number is open 24 hours and a real person answers the phone to help you (not just an automated recording).

I'm posting this just in case anyone else has the same issue I came across with gaining access to CaneLink for the first time. 🙂

I understand wanting to save on rent, but I would still recommend living budget consciously in Brickell/Downtown as opposed to one of the aforementioned areas. If you look for it you can easily find something for $1000-$1100/person per month in Brickell, or even a little less right across the river in the south end of Downtown (something like Flagler) . It's hard to beat a nice safe area where grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and anything else you could possibly need are within walking distance. You're a $1 / 10-min metro ride to campus and the savings associated with not needing a car (no insurance, gas, parking, upkeep) do a lot to help even out the cost of rent.

So I assume you don't have a car. If you had to guestimate a percentage, how many students actually have cars? I think I may forgo having one for the first two years but then get one when I have to relocate my M3/m4 years.

Probably about half. You can easily get by without a car the first two years.

Wow when I was a student nearly everyone had a car. Getting around Miami outside of Brickell requires a car. It is not made up of only Brickell and people do like to do stuff outside of Brickell regularly. Last I checked metro didn't go to south beach... But maybe it does now. It is not New York and the metro is "ok". Most people will admit that. If you wanna be that person who always has to use other people for stuff, make a point of not having a car. Also if you like cooking and want to go to a grocery that has different stuff or attend a restaurant not on the metro line or go site seeing... Have a car.

I'm not saying it's not doable, but I wouldn't recommend not having a car. It's "doable" doesn't mean it's an awesome idea. Sorry people.

Also Just because I know Miami... I would never live in Brickell, I even lived 0.5 miles from Brickell my last year 🙂. If you wanna save major money... Live near the med campus in a house or in the roads in a house, mid south beach, mid town in a house in a house... With roommates for all those options. Saving money requires effort... Not going to Miami's one stop shop for High rises built between 2000-2008 with bad construction do yourself a favour, if you're tight on money look around a bit before settling on the $1000-1100 bucks a month with a roommate!

Well.. I live in Miami and currently go to undergrad here and getting around here without a car would be a total *****.
Agreed, it's not like NY where there is a good transportation system. You can try and rely on it, but oh lawddd you'll have to wait quite a bit.
A car is just more convenient overall especially for a campus as big as UM.

Just got the "A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application..." update. Any one else got this update?

Yea, I'm very familiar with Miami and I only contemplated going maybe my first year without a car. Two at most. I'm definitely getting one when I have to relocate for M3/M4. The car I have now probably won't last long once I get to Miami and will be an absolute headache to try and transport from the midwest. Just trying to weigh my options.
