2015-2016 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an email about 45 minutes ago stating that I was placed on the wait list.

"Being placed in the wait list category means that a final decision on your application will be made at a later date in the cycle. The next time you are notified of a decision you will be informed in writing as to whether you have been accepted to the class, placed on the ranked Alternate List, or not accepted. All applicants will be notified of the Committee’s final decision no later than May 15, 2016."

Same :/

But I still have hope 😀 I know I'm OOS but interviewing here was a blessing so no matter what happens I'll be happy 🙂

Good luck to everyone else!

Aw ): I hope it was a great learning experience for you nonetheless! If I may ask, when did you interview?

Waitlisted. Interview was on Nov 4th. Anyone know how many people typically get off the waitlist or if they have a waitlist ranking available if you call? I don't want to be perceived as a neurotic premed if I call for that XD

Seems to me like "waitlist" for Minnesota is different than most schools. I think you are referring to alternate list. Waitlist here means wait....list, aka we must wait for a decision to be made a later date.
Only at that later date will we know if we are accepted, rejected, or placed on the alternate list (which is ranked to answer your question).

I checked last years thread. It seems like people who were waitlisted in January got on a ranked waitlist around April. Some people were told they were ranked at almost 200. I bet if you're ranked at 1-20 you would have a decent chance. To answer your question last year people didn't hear about rankings until April or so.
You can call to see if it's the same this year.

I'm personally taking my waitlist email as a polite rejection. Here is my interpretation of the email:
We don't like you enough to accept you but we don't want to reject you so we'll put you on hold in case one day we need a replacement for someone we already accepted. Or we might just reject you later. Who knows. We are indecisive so we'll string you along until May. We know waiting sucks but oh well-
Sincerely, UMN
Not trying to be a bummer but false hope breeds misery.

Okay Duluth... Is the alternate list equivalent to the wait list?

Just a heads up for other folks who are waiting to hear the results of their interview...i interviewed on November 30th and I heard that my application is being reviewed this week and thus will likely hear the result next week, which is about 6 weeks after my interview. Hope you all hear good news soon!

How do you know that they are reviewing your application? Did you call in?

naw, i just know someone who works there and his friend is on the admissions committee and said that folks that interviewed the week i did were being reviewed this week!

Hmmm does your friend know anything about us waiting for interviews? hahaha. I'm about 13 weeks complete and still no word :S

hoping they are just slowed down because of the holidays?

Not sure, unfortunately. This process is a grueling one and UMN does seem to take a while to get your application through each step. It took me several months before i even got my secondary, so i know the wait is painful. I wouldn't be surprised if things got even further delayed by the holidays. I can't remember, does UMN say they will get back to you about an II or rejection within a certain timeframe after submitting your secondary? If so, and youre several weeks past that timeframe, i think it'd be reasonable to call and check in.

Hey @campb767, as an OOS re-applicant, I'll share my experience from last year for comparison.

Timeline last year:
7/21 - AMCAS verified
9/3 - Secondary received (50 days after verification)
9/9 - Secondary Submitted
11/4 - Rejected Pre-ii (56 days after secondary)

Timeline this year:
7/28 - AMCAS verified
9/16 - Secondary received (50 days after verification)
9/29 - Secondary Submitted
??????

You'd think there was a trend here, but that flew out the window when I wasn't rejected around Thanksgiving. Not really sure what else to assume. Called admissions last week and they said I'm still in consideration, so that's something. But then again, using SDN as a bellwether, they don't seem to have sent out any pre-ii rejections since October. Whatever the case, stay positive. They interview until April so there's still time. Good luck!

Okay Duluth... Is the alternate list equivalent to the wait list?

The alternate list at Duluth is where they pull from after original acceptances when they still need seats filled. Later on they will tell you if you are high priority or not.

Thank you, thank you! So do they tell you alternate list right away, then organize it and email again?

Does anybody know how the OOS scholarship where they grant you in-state tuition works? Is there an app process or do they just offer it to certain students?

Accepted to the UMN - Twin Cities Medical School!!! It only took them 4 weeks post interview to get back to me, which was a great surprise since they had estimated that it would take 8-10 weeks. I think the only people more excited than me were my parents. Some of you could be hearing from them shortly.

Extra info: IS, median GPA/MCAT, solid 15 experiences, and interviewed mid/late November.
Congrats! What were your actual STATS if you don't mind me asking? You can PM me

Thank you. My stats are 3.8 GPA and 31 MCAT. Like I said, it's pretty much the same as the UMN TC's average of 3.7 GPA and 32 MCAT.

got my II last week! OOS. How long does it take to confirm your interview date? I replied directly to the invite and am nervous that I screwed something up... Paranoia...

Can I ask when your secondary application was complete?

Still waiting for II. Completed my secondary in Oct 15. No rejection or invitation. Tired of waiting!

You didn't do anything wrong (I'm also OOS). I also thought I was missing something but this program takes a longer time with responses. Here's my timeline for comparison:

Interview invite email: 9/25/15
2 emails and 1 phone call later...
Interview confirmation email: 10/19/15

Congratulations on the interview invitation! Best of luck!

Does anybody know when they would have the next committee meeting? Thanks.

I believe the next committee meeting is next Wednesday. They told our interview group they are every other Wednesday

Oh wow! They do take their time... when was your interview if you don't mind me asking? The dates they offered are coming up in less than a month. Thanks so much for the info, I feel like I'm losing my mind over here. Do you think I should follow up with a phone call soon?

Thank you! I'm really excited 🙂

@squareCD I interviewed on 11/13. If you don't hear anything by the middle of next week (since it is MLK on Mon) I would encourage you to call, so you have ample time to plan around your life (school or work) and source your flights and accommodations. Lola was very helpful.

will do. Thanks for the advice and best of luck to you!

Received an email notification about receiving the scholarship that lets out of state people pay in state tuition. FYI for those waiting on this kind of information, I assume they have just started going out since no other word about it on here.

Oh good to know! When were you accepted Ochemphd?

Got the official email on January 5th. The call was at the end of December. The scholarship was a few days after I accepted my offer, don't know if that is relevant though.

I was having the same issue. I emailed them asking about it, but I have not heard anything back. Have you?

Hey tooastyy, I gave them a call yesterday and the secretary confirmed my date for February 9th. She said that their emailer was still working on January dates. So try giving them a call and see if they can confirm. Let me know how it goes!

Accepted. Got the call this morning. It's really a long journey!
Congrats! When did you interview? If you don't want to be exact, a small range would be helpful as well. I interviewed end of November and have been eagerly waiting to hear back.

Complete and total silence since Sept. What the heck is going on this year?
I am in almost the same boat, complete in October. I called last Friday and they said "Your application is currently being reviewed and you should hear back within the next week"....who knows what that means...
I feel like we are the "they don't suck enough to say no, but we don't love them enough to say yes....so we will wait" no idea.

Thanks. I interviewed late Nov.

Hope this helps a few of you:

In-state.
3.5 GPA / 30 MCAT
MPH
2 publications (One first-author)
Third time applicant (Waited two years before reapplying)

AMCAS Submitted: 06/26/15
UMN Initial Contact: 07/01/15 (Select Duluth or TC or both)
AMCAS Verified: 07/22/15
Secondary Received: 08/25/15
Secondary Sent: 09/01/15
Interview Invite: 10/30/15
II Confirmation: 11/05/15
Interview Date: 12/04/15 (Friday)
Outcome: ??? (Supposed to hear back at 8 weeks. It has been 7)

Of the two interviews, one was probably the best interviewing experience I've ever had; the other was the exact opposite. Be prepared for a conversational interviewer or a straight-faced, emotionless, Q&A type. I never ever had the latter, so I was definitely thrown off. And as you can guess, I completely lost focus for the rest of the day because I felt like I blew it with the second interviewer.

I had the same exact interviewing experience. A couple of others who applied last year also said the same thing in the 2014-2015 discussion thread. Maybe we had the same interviewer?

I interviewed in early December and heard back three weeks later.

Both of my interviewers were EXTREMELY professional and made me feel comfortable. They matched my interviewers to my experiences. As in one of my interviewers graduated from my alma mater with the same major as me and worked at two places I volunteered. The other interviewer ended up discussing healthcare in the rural area I grew up because they used to practice there.

I know that i was not the only one that they did this for - another interviewee in my group said they matched her interviewer with common experiences like engineering and healthcare abroad so they talked for quite a while.

I apologize you didn't get this same feeling. I just wanted to post so that others may know that it could have just been your one interviewer because almost everyone I have talked to (n=15+) who interviewed at the U of M - Twin Cities had very positive experiences for both interviews. 🙂

I haven't had such long interviews... A little nervous about talking for so long and stumbling into a hole that I can't get out of. 😛

Would anyone have any advice about the interviews? Any questions that tripped you up? Also, does anyone know how the committee selects who's accepted/waitlisted/rejected? Feel free to PM me. Thanks!
