2015-2016 University of Rochester Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They will document that they have received it, if that's what you're asking.

Ah ok. I'm from California and making a trip out to Albert Einstein in December. But I figure that since I've been complete since 7/4 and Rochester looks at applications on a rolling basis, I've been passed over (but obviously I can't say for sure).

application reviews don't always happen in a chronological order. Keep your chin up!

I've also been glossed over. I've been complete since around 8/05 and nothing but silence. My stats are spot on for their school. I am IS. Not sure why there is no love from Rochester... I've been glossed over by others as well, Mt. Sinai, Hofstra, Stony Brook, Downstate, and so on. Its a depressing cycle.

Edit: I think my point is that it is definitely not in chronological order... even at "rolling" schools.

What do you guys think from the EC section on the II page? Are hobbies okay to put down? not really sure what to put here for my last activity haha.

Is Rochester rolling? In other words, is it better to interview earlier here?

Interviewed here a few weeks back and it was an awesome day! Feel free to PM me with any questions!

How do I check for II? The portal leads me to the supplementary app

Is Rochester actually $68,000 for out of state residents..?

Wait, really?
That's the stat I find on major databases, but can't seem to find the actual amount on the urmc website..
IF that is true, I doubt I could find myself attending..

I'm pretty sure that for all private schools IS and OOS tuition are the same.
Nah I've found some schools that do have different tuitions despite being private.
But this helped so thank you!
It looks like they are the same for IS and OOS!

Question on secondary--
Briefly discuss a way in which you have demonstrated a commitment to serve others.
In the above question, is it ok to describe two distinct volunteer experiences? e.g teaching underprivileged kids and volunteer work at hospital. Thanks!

Yup you got it covered. Please tell me this is not for this cycle! A bit too late imho.

Does anybody remember from their interview day if decisions will be released on Oct. 15th? Hoping for the best from Rochester!!

I thought they mentioned we should hear something back in October. Maybe as early as Oct 15th. Last year they had decisions some on oct 15/16th.

I just interviewed at UR and I am really interested in the MD program. Students seem to be very happy and and really like their professors. The only thing I fear is the weather and things to do outside of school. I didn't see many bars nearby or typical hang out spots for med students. Can someone correct me? What is it like living in Rochester? I'm from California and am not used to such extreme winter climates.

For those that are interested in my stats:

URM
3.85 from top 10 university
29 MCAT (P12, V6, B11)
Fair amount of research
Great letters and ECs

Sorry for the super late reply, I got super busy.

I'm from an area wth little snow, so haven't yet experienced a winter yet. But from what I hear, winters are brutal but manageable. Most students live in what's called the white coat district- leads to a max of a 10 min walk. I've veen told to invest in a good pair of boots and a thick jacket. So there's no getting around it- winters are rough, but Rochester deals with snow well. Roads are cleared fast, and we NEVER have snow days. We have several people from California and many from the south (about 15-20% of our class is from there), so it'll be a bit of a learning curve, but we'll survive. Med students live in the hospital anyway- One thing nice about having to go to the hospital is that roads near the hospital are cleared fast

Last year, The first decisions were on October 16th. I got an email around 2-3PM. Usually rochester calls you (I think it's dean hansen?) But last year, they emailed everyone they accepted on the 1st day, and called everyone on subsequent days- I didn't get an email haha

Interview was pretty chill. I liked it way more than I was expecting. All the students were super friendly and while we were waiting in the admissions lounge, students just kept stopping by asking us how our day was going, if we had any questions, if we needed help with anything etc etc. The interviews were super calm and conversational. During the interview, they gave me the impression (although I could be wrong) that they were already interested in giving me an admissions offer which I presume is the case for everyone (that's why you received the interview invitation after all). The ethical group discussion was very low-key. Sat around and everyone took turns sharing their thoughts on the pretty standard ethical scenario. Can't really think of anything I disliked. Seems like a great place to be a medical student. I stayed with a student host, which was also great.

Haha, good to know! We like to talk to interviewees- It's fun, and I really appreciated when students did it last year, so I try to pay back in kind. At rochester at least, if you dont see 1st years stop by during your interview day, it's because it's probably exam week (or exam day), or we have a really packed schedule

Congrats!!! When did you interview if you dont mind me asking? Hoping to hear from Rochester soon as it is my first choice!
Thanks and congrats again!! So incredible

I interviewed very early Sept. And thank you! I hope you get into your first choice school! Best of luck.

Accepted this morning via email and I interviewed 9/03. I do know some people who interviewed later in September and haven't heard back yet. Anyone know what this means?

Congrats! I was wondering the same thing about interviewing in mid september and not hearing back yet. Do you think they will send out more emails today?

Sorry if this has been mentioned but does anyone know of any affordable hotels in the area near the medical school? Thanks!

I stayed at the Staybridge. It had an awesome view of the school and was only a mile away from the campus. I highly recommend it. Had a pool overlooking the river that I could swim in to take my mind off the interview haha. Also it has bus transportation to the interview if you need.

Hey guys I will be interviewing here on 10/29. I have a question about the 4 experiences you have to put down on the interview page in the portal: how specific were you guys when selecting activities? Im not sure whether to put down for example, physician shadowing, since i have shadowed different types of doctors or they want something more specific

Honestly I wouldn't worry too much about it! Put whatever you felt was important to you. They're really just talking points for the interviewer since they are blind interviews. Your interviewer may not even read them until after the fact (if at all)!

And congrats on the interview! You'll love it there. 🙂

anybody know from last year what how many students were interviewed and how many were accepted ?

Where did you get those numbers? I subscribe to US News and World Report and have completely different numbers for all three schools. Trust me, it's not that bad.
I heard 230 of ~600 from the mouth of Dr John Hansen, Associate Dean of Admissions on my interview day. =) I wrote it down.

^seconded.
Pat and Ann (admissions director and coordinator) both gave us the same numbers on my interview day. ~600-650 interviews and ~220-250 acceptances.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that that's what they aim for, with small deviations from year to year. At Pitt and NYU though, their accepted/II ratios were much higher than 10 or 15% last year.

I guess i was comparing U of R to suny upstate. i think at upstate it was about 750 interviewed and 400 acceptances. the 15% acceptance rate at pitt or nyu seems ridiculous after interviewing. makes it seem like they dont really want most of the applicants and waste their time interviewing

Yeah it seems ridiculous because it's not even true. Pitt has a 41% post interview acceptance rate!

Pittsburgh (according to USNWR):
Applied: 5534
Interviews: 859
Accepted: 348
Matriculated: 147

Thanks for this! Can you possible debunk the NYU 15%?
