2015-2016 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you don't mind me asking IAMURMautoadmit, what are your stats like? Given UT Southwestern is a high tier school, stats play a significant role in determining who get an interview invite.

3.2 gpa 508 mcat. According to the old conversion tables corresponding to ethnicity I should have had a pretty decent chance?

Could you link the conversion table? I didn't know such things even existed. Also, how old are these tables. Remember class stats on average increase year by year.

From a purely objective perspective, your gpa and mcat are significantly below the averages for UT Southwestern. However, what are your ECs like? If your EC's and essays are exceptional, you might have a shot! There are still a few interview dates I believe.

Where'd you see those conversion tables? I know URM gives a boost, but I don't think it's that much. 90% of those accepted at southwestern have >3.63 gpa and >510 mcat.

He's probably talking about these tables:

https://www.aei.org/publication/acc...irmative-discrimination-for-blacks-hispanics/

The table up front is directly from AAMC. If you're black with a 3.2 GPA and a 27-29 MCAT, you have an 81.6% chance of being accepted to medical school versus a 15.1% chance for an Asian with similar numbers. Granted, that has nothing to do with UTSW directly and it's merely an overview of the entire admissions process across all U.S. allopathic schools.

If you're hispanic or black with a 3.6-3.79 GPA and a 30-32 on the MCAT, you have a 94% chance of being accepted to an allopathic medical school versus 63% or 65% if you're asian or white, respectively, with similar stats.

I interviewed on 11/21/2015 and was offered admission to UT Southwestern on 12/11/2015 (a few minutes after NoWheyBruh). Those that interviewed the same weekend as me or before could hear back anytime soon!

Actually I interviewed 11/21/15 and my stats are 31 MCAT and 3.92 GPA. Is that somewhere close to you (Donkey Kong)? I am trying to figure out if i have hope or not. Ive already pre-matched at UT Houston and Texas A&M. just curious if my stats are decent enough to even get accepted via Match or if I should just rank UT Houston #1 and be done with it.

My MCAT is a 29 so I'm guessing we have around the same score, I'm URM and I applied early and was accepted. UTSW's MCAT range of matriculated students is a 25-41. However your GPA is a little on the lower side. I had a 4.0 which maybe contributed to my II. I also didn't have any research. I would hold out a little longer. The application cycle isn't over just yet. Also those AAMC stats are misleading so I would take those with a grain of salt.

I would rank UTSW higher if you really want to go there over UTH. You never know what might happen on match day.

@r14wr My gpa is basically the same as yours. My MCAT is in the mid 30's. I would say that our stats are similar. How did your interviews go?
You still have time for prematch, and then there is still match day. Don't loose hope! If UT Southwestern is your first choice, rank it accordingly!

@Cookie04 I heard UT Southwestern places an emphasis on gpa. In general, a 4.0 is pretty epic and more than made up for your MCAT.

I actually thought my interviews went very well! I am pretty outgoing and I had things like research and medical mission trips to talk about. my weakest point is my MCAT i would say. Their average is like 34 i think. I was just hoping to have a pre-match offer on the table before the Match date so that I could make an overall final decision. My only hesitation about the Match is that i hear not many people Match at UTSW on Feb 1st but they hear back during late-April/early-May. I guess I'm saying i don't wanna be getting settled in Houston or whatever and get pulled in off the Match waiting list or however they do it. Though UTSW is my first choice so i can't be too picky.

A 31 on the MCAt is not bad at all. It obviously did not hurt your application as you got an interview. It seems the rest of your application is pretty solid, so might have a pretty good chance in my opinion. As you said, yeah, UTSW tends to fill most of its incoming class, at least initially, with prematch offers. According to a few of my friends, that is why UTSW has significant waitlist movement in April/May. At this point though, prematch is still on the table for you! *fingers crossed* If UTSW is your first choice, I would assume you would be happy to relocate in time for the school year?

I hope they favor upward trend. I have one more semester, and I have a 4.0 so far this semester. 🙂 I did research, only for a semester though.

Yeah, this one. I mean it's a rough estimate but I just took the percentages of each of my subsections. :/ My gpa will improve, but probablu won't get to 3.3 by the time I graduate.

A little late to the party, but I got accepted! 😀 Interviewed 11/21/2015, got accepted 12/11/2015.

And I was told that I shouldn't even apply to med schools this cycle...!

Same interview date as me. What is your LizzyM, if you don't mind me asking?

What's sad is that I never even really thought of LizzyM stuff, so it took me a while to figure out how to calculate it (I read somewhere it's GPA*10+MCAT, right?).

Anyhoo, tis a 63.7, according to that equation (let me know if I'm off).

Yup. Are you URM?

I can honestly say I'm falling more and more in love with this school everyday. I'm getting contacted by many students and faculty who want to act as a resource to help my final decision. This hospitality is just something else 🙂

Pre-matched on 12/11/15.

Interviewed on 11/6/15.

4.0 GPA from public, in-state university, 33 MCAT, re-applicant after declining offer last year from another Texas school.

Well, I don't think I'm gonna get a prematch from them. Bummer.

I could not agree more! These emails really make me feel valuable to UTSW.

Yes, if you look in past threads you will see that some people get them, I believe they still give all OOS students a small scholarship to give them IS tuition. In the past (I don't know about now) they included scholarship offers in the official letter that students receive post acceptance. Has anyone gotten an official letter yet btw? Also, based on this forum they have matched scholarship offers from other schools in the past.
I've been looking for the details on UTSW matching scholarship offers. Would you mind sharing the link?

can someone explain the difference between pre-match, match, and "getting in off the waitlist" are?

IMO, the best way to understand is when each of those take place. Pre-match is getting an acceptance between Nov 15 to Dec 31, Match is getting in on Feb 1st, and then off the waitlist is pretty much anytime after that. Each of these only apply to schools that you have interviewed at. To pre-match with a school, you have to have interviewed with them before Dec 31st. Practically speaking, though, you want to interview with a school before December if you want to pre-match with them. For match/getting of waitlist, all interviews are done. Also, if I am not mistaken, these only apply to Texas residents.

What percentage of class do you think utsw has already selected?

What percentage of class do you think utsw has already selected?

Oh man, that is a tough one to answer, especially since most schools are not really transparent with their admissions process. The general line of thinking is that UTSW is very pre-match heavy and after that it is coming off the waitlist. With that in mind, my guess is that UTSW has already filled up its entire class. That is really the only way they have to take people off the waitlist later on to fill the class. But, I have heard that a good amount of people come off the waitlist. A friend of mine said around a 100 (not sure how true that is, though).

In the thread I can recall off the top of my head the guy had a slightly better scholarship at ut Houston and he told southwestern he liked them better but was hung up a bit on the cost difference and was wondering if they could match it Houston's offer. They matched it, I don't know how often it would work out that way, but it seems it is worth a try anyways if you get a better tuition deal somewhere else.

I'm having a hard time finding any information, does anyone know if there is any way to update any of the Texas schools, especially UTSW, with our Fall grades and such? Do we just send our updated transcript to TMDSAS (which wouldn't cover extracurricular activities but is better than nothing?) It's late and chances are getting slimmer by the day... but I figure a strong semester might make a tad of a difference. Appreciate any help and congrats to those who have been accepted!

You send official transcripts to tmdsas

Do you know when the updated transcripts are expected? I currently have an incomplete in a research related class due to some circumstances out of my control and I don't want the schools to see my transcript with an INC.

Not sure, sorry. When you do send them in though, remember to add in the transcript request form!

I wouldn't worry about sending trancripts until after match.

For those who were accepted, did you get a confirmation email after you sent the acceptance form? If so how long did it take to receive it?

I got a confirmation email 3 business days after emailing the acceptance form.

Bit of an underdog for this school (3.2 GPA, 22 MCAT, URM) but hoping to hear some good news soon.
Anyone who interviewed in early November hear anything yet?

Current MS1 at UTSW! For those of you who are freaking out, I didn't interview until January of last year and was accepted in May....It seems like a good amount of people I've met here got off the waitlist last cycle (so don't lose hope!). I would be more than happy to answer anyone's questions about the new curriculum or admissions.

Hey, thanks so much! Would you say most of the Waitlist movement happens in May, then? Also, how does the class report feedback about the new curriculum to admin?

Yes! To be honest, it seems most people in our current class got in through joint/early admissions programs (the one at UTD/old one at UT Austin), deferred, are md/phd, or got in off the waitlist. I have met very few people who got in through match or prematch. I don't know if this is normal, or if last year was the exception. One unifying thing I noticed is that most of the people who got in around May DID send update letters telling UTSW it was their first choice. If you know 100% you want to go here, I would let the school know via an update letter!

We have so many opportunities to provide feedback about the new curriculum. We complete surveys after every class rating every lecturer and all aspects of the course. It is more thorough than I ever thought possible. We also have great curriculum committee members who act as a liaison between students and course directors. There were a lot of problems with the curriculum starting out, but I can promise you we have worked really hard to make it the best for the next class. I love the school and the curriculum (as I've completed it thus far) and have no regrets about turning down the other options I had.

That's so good to know about update letters/letters of intent. If I get into UTSW my husband and I will pack up our things and drive down to Dallas. Hopefully that day will come.

Could you comment a bit about what a week as a student is like, how busy you are, how often you're in class, etc.? Also, how do you like the team-based learning, how they described it in the interview was awesome, but does it seem to be productive?

Who did you guys send the update letters to? Typically they say to send everything through TMDSAS, but is this one thing that you can send directly to the school? Also, is it more of a letter of interest (as in I want to come to here and here is why) or an update letter (this is what I have done since my interview)? Thanks!

I sent mine late January/early February after I found out I didn't match to UTSW and was waitlisted. I've heard similar things from others. I would make it personal and explain why this school is the best place for you to be and what you've been doing since you submitted your applications.

Our weeks really vary. The beginning of last semester was hard because we were juggling Human Structure (anatomy), Microanatomy (histology), and a third class (genetics, biochem, bugs and drugs, immune, etc). We generally had 3 lectures per day (I streamed at 1.6x) and something in the afternoons 2-4x/week. Once we started finishing things up, our schedule lightened and it was easier to manage. Starting in January we will begin organ systems and it will be nice to focus on just one thing.

We have TBLs ~2X/month. They are a waste of time in my opinion. I don't know why they make such a big deal about it to applicants. I would not use this as a factor when choosing between schools.

Overall, UTSW is TOUGH. The curriculum was hard before and it is even more accelerated now....my saving grace is that we are P/F. I know I wouldn't be happy if it was any other way. While I have been challenged, I have still been able to pass everything and maintain a social life, exercise, spend time with my boyfriend, and go out once a week. Others have more or less free time depending on the person.

...Just be warned that if you come here you will be working very hard from day 1 🙂 Probably true at any school, but especially here!!

Thanks so much for all your help! If its a true pass/fail, how are class percentile determined for residencies? And what will AOA be based on?

*Pass/fail for pre-clinical curriculum, or first 1.5 years*

There is NO internal ranking or grades until you start doing rotations. Residencies care mostly about step exams, but you will have a percentile based on clinical grades (last 2.5 years) when you apply.

I believe AOA is based on 3rd/4th year grades, but you'd have to ask a dean or admissions for clarity on that! It's not on my radar since our current performance is not factored in 🙂

*Pass/fail for pre-clinical curriculum, or first 1.5 years*

@CherrySmog can you enlighten me as to how pass/fail actually works? For example, do students earn a "number grade"..i.e 81% or 77% but anything above a certain value is pass, everything below is fail? I ask this question because earning a number grade on an exam allows an individual to determine how well/poor he or she did. How can mastery of content be determined with only pass/fail?

Thank you for your time!
