2015-2016 University of Utah Application Thread

Interview invite!!!! (just saw it cause I been workin all day). It's freakin me out cause I really really really have wanted to go to this school (the last 10 years of my life have revolved around making myself be a good applicant for this school however pathetic that sounds). We'll see if we are a good match for each other (not that I'm already expecting to get rejected.....). Anyways my MCAT and GPA are above average (not that this means anything to Utah from what I've been told). My worry is that although my extracurriculars cover all of Utah's bases, there is nothing in my application that make a person say, "wow! this person is diverse and did something amazing that should make us want them." I will say though having someone look over your application and think you have a chance of succeeding as a doctor is a good feeling. The road hasn't been easy but it should eventually be worth all the effort (I say this cause I have absolutely loved my experiences working with patients and doctors, with some exceptions such as cleaning up poop and all that fun stuff + the fact I'd be dead now if it weren't for doctors). Any tips on how to reflect one's good character in traditional and MMI interviews? I'm freaking out. I'm going biking.

Also get your pictures taken if you haven't already as "It is mandatory that you email us a current passport style photograph in a jpeg format". It would be good to start waking up early as you are to "arrive between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. at the School of Medicine". Their interviews are as follows: "The Assessment Day process will consist of 2 one-on-one interviews, Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI), and a Moral and Ethical Problem Exam (MEPE)." Good luck everybody except for you Utah haters!

I was "complete" a couple days after I got my secondary which was Aug 10th. I got my primary turned in July 1st. Also the interview dates are Sep. 18th, 21st, and 25th.

I don't recall them asking for a photo. Is this something in the interview invite email, or did I just miss it before?

I go to school at Utah med. I love it. What I really love is the way the courses are structured. To be honest, you don't have THAT much free time, so having the courses be integrated is really nice.

Oh, and my class is very diverse, personality-wise. So, don't be afraid to be yourself. There's no "right" personality here, at least.

Sorry for the delay in replying I had a busy day yesterday! I completed my secondary on september 4th so just a few days ago! Interview will either be september 18th 21st or 25th. I have a 3.9 gpa and got a 505 on the new MCAT (65th percentile). I also did a ton or extracurricular activities because I know that is what Utah looks at. Now time to freak out as I try to prepare ahh!!!

It is mentioned in the interview invite email. It's as follows: "It is mandatory that you email us a current passport style photograph in a jpeg format to [email protected] when you submit your Interview Schedule Form. This photo will remain in your applicant file."

Sweet, thanks a bunch

Did anyone with interviews on either the 18th, 21st, or 25th get a phone call confirmation yet?

Still waiting... not sure if I have an interview tomorrow or not....

I know this school is awesome. And I would be very grateful to get here. But there are just some things that rub me the wrong way. And this is definitely one of them. They haven't confirmed a scheduled interview that is tomorrow?! Come on U of U SOM. You should be better than this.

My mistake..... you should still love them. In my experience they have always been very kind and helpful.

Did they contact you? But don't get me wrong. I love the U of U. I think it's also important to understand that, for any school, your experience with admissions is not alway indicative of your experience in med school. But hope you got it worked out! Good luck!

How long did it take for the school to download everyone LOR's?

Got ANOTHER one of those "the deadline is approaching for your application" this morning (my second one)- I know we've already discussed this here not being an issue if we've submitted and gotten the confirmation, but I am stressing out a bit over it nonetheless!

I got the email as well, but I also got an interview invite yesterday so I think I am okay. Confirmation email on 8/28.

Anyone who interviewed yesterday have any advice for us?

Thanks buddy. I'm sure you will be getting your invite within the next couple weeks. The options were 9/21, 9/25, 9/28, and 10/2. I put 10/2 as my top choice.

I understand your frustration. But really, if you are concerned, then just call their office. They'll help.

IS II on 9/18, confirmed today for 10/2.

Lady on the phone said they were all booked through 10/2 and were about to ask me to re-rank my preferences. As she was talking on the phone someone cancelled and I took their place. Just to let the rest of you know where they stand.

Anybody have suggestions on effective ways to prepare for MMIs?

In all honesty there really isn't any way to prepare for it. My first interview this cycle was strictly MMI, and there was just no way I could have prepared for/guessed what questions I ended up getting. You can obviously prepare for traditional interview prompts like "why this school" or "why become a doctor" but since the U does both traditional and MMI interviews those will likely be asked during a traditional interview. MMI is used to see how well you think on your feet and under pressure. But don't stress it too much. If you are capable of getting an II chances are you will do just fine during an MMI.

For those who already interviewed recently or anytime in the past. Any tips or advice for us on how to act and what to expect on the interview day?
