2015-2016 University of Utah Application Thread

Okay, so I want to know where we're at. I am IS and I submitted my secondary a day or two after it became available with a complete email on 8/24. I have yet to receive an interview. Who else is in the same boat? I'm starting to wonder if they passed over my application or if I'm still likely to receive an interview. I am above average in 6/7, so as an IS student, I was somewhat expecting an interview. I'm just curious how many other people are in this situation.

I was in this exact situation until yesterday when I got an interview. I think it's just comes down to the luck of the draw as to who reviews your app and how fast they are. I'm sure you will get an interview.

Just confirmed my interview date. October 19th here I come!

I interviewed here last week and just wanted to comment on how great the interview was. The two personal interviews were fairly casual and just felt conversational. I was initially pretty worried about the MMI, but that ended up being one of my favorite parts. All the students we talked to were extremely nice and informative, the facilities were top notch and the programs they offered seemed really helpful. Additionally, Dr. Chan seems great! He was really nice and easy going. Really hoping for some IS love!!

Just curious what has the gender ratio been like in all of the interview groups? there were 2 girls and 10 guys during my interview, is this what other people have experienced as well?

Only one girl at mine.

Just received an II

Complete around 8/15

The ratio for the class accepted last cycle was not 50:50. However, I have been to a couple other interviews in the west, and the girls were greatly outnumbered by the boys at both of these prior interviews as well. This also is the case in many of my upper division science courses at my undergraduate school in Utah.

Is it true that they still try to accept 50:50 girls and boys even though it seems like there is so many more boys than girls that apply?

In our current class of first-years, I would guess the ratio is 1/3 girls, 2/3 boys.

Odd, our class is 50:50 perhaps favoring girls I believe (2nd years). The idea of admission is usually to try to match pop. stats best you can not necessary application numbers, but perhaps recent applications haven't been able to support that... Idk interesting.

II today! What is meant by passport-style photo? Does it have to be unsmiling with a white background, or does a photo in professional attire work?

When were you complete? Stats? What dates did they give you?

Got my interview for the U!!!! SO EXCITED OVER HERE!!!!
Complete 8/24 cGPA-3.85, sGPA - 3.81 MCAT -30 (11VR, 11BS, 8PS).
At/above average in 7/7 areas.
They gave me the following dates: Nov 9th, 13th and 16th

Does anybody know how many Idaho applicants they interview?

Hmm I don't know. Certainly it is a goal of admissions to balance the class. I need to go back and double check my class make-up. However, I just know that in all the various small groups I'm in, boys outnumber girls about 2:1.

Just for the sake of following up, I just went to my class list and counted. 60% men 40% women. I am very certain that this is due to the applicant pool. They have to take mostly Utah resident and the Utah applicants I would safely guess are predominantly male.

Waiting on one last letter of recommendation to submit my secondary application.....🤔

Interviewing 11/2. Excited but this interview is going to suck and probability of acceptance is low.

Good luck. Why do you think you have a low probability of acceptance? Stay positive 🙂

I'm a white male with average to below average stats and they accept 25% of the in state applicants they interview. I'm staying positive but realistically I'm at the low end of the pool.

Positivity man! 🙂 On a different note, most people have a pretty good time with the interviews, they are appealing but I can honestly say I enjoyed most all of mine (and I'm on the more introverted side of things). Also to add a totally anecdotal experience I interviewed at and was accepted to my schools that I thought I had the worst chance of going in, and was rejected to a couple that I thought I had in the bag. Don't give up til it's over, the admissions process can be a strange black box,you never know what will happen.

Anybody accepted yet? If not does anybody have any idea when Dr. Chan will make the first batch of calls?

Anybody else receive the "Research Opportunities" email from the U? Saw an email from them, and my heart nearly stopped! Loved the school and the people during my interview.

Last year the first calls went out mid-November. Most of the calls came January - March.

yes! I got one too. I thought it was going to be a rejection email (because so far emails from the schools have been only to notify me that "unfortunately we decided not to proceed further with your application").

Got it too and had the same reaction haha

Just completed secondary...hope I am not too late in the cycle..

Got an II today! Beyond excited because it was so unexpected. Secondary submitted mid-September. OOS (not contiguous with Utah), below average GPA, average/above MCAT, above average in all other categories. Quite a bit of research in multiple areas, as well as some unique experiences. Interview date sometime mid to late November! Best of luck to those still waiting.

Can anyone who has already interviewed tell me how much walking there is during the interview? I am trying to decide what shoes to wear.

I would say there was a decent amount. You walk back and forth between interviewing and the admissions office. Then you have your campus tour which is a fair amount of walking. And then you walk to lunch which is actually further away than I expected. Haha. I'd go with comfortable shoes for sure.

Are there still a lot of in state interviews to be handed out?

II this morning! OOS but this is my absolute top choice. Reading the invite when I woke up almost made me fall out of bed haha I am so so SO excited!!

I am super curious. Why is Utah your "absolute top choice?"

I'm also curious

I have the fortunate convenience of having two friends who attend U of U (MS1 and MS3) who I have grown up with and who absolutely love the program and the area. I chose three schools that were reach programs for me that I have had some inside information on (whether it be friends attending the programs or working with medical students and professors at the programs-ie UCSD) and UCSD, Utah and Oregon were at the top of my list. UCSD did not work out so I guess I should have said that U of U is my absolute top choice now. Furthermore, I have visited the campus multiple times and from what I have heard about the medical program and how intertwined it is with not only the area but the nation in regards to advancing healthcare reform, I truly believe it would be amazing to have the opportunity to attend. It is also the only program that I applied to that is amazingly strict on extracurricular engagements (as per their secondary) which, to me, means they really do value holistic review. My buddies told me that they even do an event each year to help med students come up with new innovations (small and large) for the medical field, as well has help bring them to patent if they are worthy! While I am not applying MD/PhD I have really come to see the importance of research while working at UCSD and would like to continue my efforts. At the UofU there are endless opportunities to do so. There are many, MANY things that have drawn me to this program (including the notion that there are some of the greatest outdoor activities in the nation there [Zion, Park City etc] if you are into that, which I definitely am) and if you would like to know more about my bias towards this program feel free to PM me! I do not want to hijack this thread more than I already have.

Has anyone heard anything about when Utah will start making some acceptance calls?
