2015-2016 University of Virginia Application Thread

Interviewed here last year, and just wanted to share some travel tips. If you decide to fly into DC (especially National airport- DCA), I would take blue or yellow line metro (next to the airport) down to King street (2 stops from the airport) then take Amtrak (Alexandria station- next to the King street metro) to Charlottesville. The train is coming from the Unioin station and Alexandria is the first stop on the way to Charlottesville. So you can take the same train from DC, but it's much quicker to get to Alexandria from DCA. Also you could take greyhound bus from Springfield (blue line, about 5 stops from the airport) to Charlottesville. If you decide to fly into Richmond, yes it is very easy one hour drive. Good luck!

You can take the train from Richmond or Amtrak from Burke station (fairly close to Dulles) or Union station. From there it's a short cab ride to UVA's campus. If you have a car, the drive from Dulles to Cville is actually quite nice (about 2 hours, 15 minutes if you take 66 to 29) and the drive from Richmond is even faster (1 hour on 64 West - just watch out for cops!).

A novel idea... fly into CHO....:laugh::laugh:

welcome everyone! i totally forgot to do this last year due to 3rd year clerkships, and now that i'm a glorious ~m4~ i thought i'd pop on back! i'm a VA resident, had average-ish numbers once upon a time (i don't know what they are nowadays), and i LOVE UVA med! i will try to be on here to answer questions, but you can always DM me.

Is UVA a research-focused school? It doesn't seem like it based on their website but just wanted to make sure..
i went a very research-heavy undergrad so in comparison, i would say no. during orientation, we did one of those activities to see what experiences our classmates had had, and less than 50% or so came in with research, which was a huge shock to me. i think that shows that research is not the be-all-end-all at uva. that being said, you can definitely find research if that's what you're looking for (like me). it's just not as big of a focus. i think this is largely because we have a condensed preclerkship curriculum so it's just harder to squeeze in more basic science work.

Yes, the school and city of charlottesville are VERY accepting of LGBT community. 🙂
definitely true! the escafe (gay bar) party during orientation is always a huge hit.

For the current students: What makes UVA special? Are there any unique features about the school that are not discussed on the website?
i honestly can't remember what's on the website anymore, but uva is just AMAZING. the culture is huge here -- it's very collaborative, low stress, focused on the overall well-being of students. yes, there are #darkdays for everyone, and you know there will always be the secret gunners, but for the most part, everyone takes care of each other. we actually just had a big loss in our community recently (a medical student died in a car accident), and it was incredible how much our school came together for that from every level of student up into the administration. it's truly a family here, and what made me really want to come here when i interviewed was that i saw how supportive we were, and i wanted to be part of that community!

other things- P=MD is always amazing. having less time on preclerkships is a great blessing; i love having additional time to do fun electives as a fourth year. i got to take time off for step 2, go on vacation, do my advanced clinical electives, do two away rotations, AND still have time prior to turning in ERAS this year so that was definitely helpful and really great for students who might not be sure about what they want to do yet. also having gone on aways, it's really mind-boggling how well UVA prepares us for the wards. there were just some things expected of uva med students that i thought was "normal" until i went on my aways and was surprised by the 3rd year med students' skill sets (not that they were BAD but they just sort of hung out in the background instead of getting actively involved).

Thanks! Stay strong! Apparently UVA's interview day is pretty chill, so I'm actually looking forward to it rather than dreading it haha
it is. please don't freak out too much! i wouldn't blow it off (obviously still be professional and polite), but the interview is definitely focused on figuring who you are as a person and whether you fit into our culture/what we are looking for in a class (at least that's the impression i got when i interviewed). i spent most of my interviews talking about my family/how i grew up and then my favorite books!

Does UVA send out rejections in batches throughout the whole cycle or do they do silent rejection?

They say that they reconsider everyone every month, so you get a new shot for an interview each month. However, at the end of the cycle if you still weren't selected for an interview they will send you a rejection

Thanks for the insight! Where did you hear this out of curiosity?

II just now! Complete 10/12. LizzyM 77. I am beyond shocked and I'm considering the possibility there was a mix up 😵 lol good distractor after a tough exam

Does anyone know whether they are sending out admission offers tomorrow or Friday?

Does UVA send multiple waves of IIs or do IIs just trickle after the first wave?

they trickle. i don't think there are really waves...

When did you interview?

having given tours today... it sounds like the first batch of decisions are indeed going out tomorrow. that means anyone who has interviewed prior to this friday should be hearing back via email. good luck! just remember that the waitlist is NOT a death sentence here at uva!

Thanks! Best of luck to anyone waiting on the news today.

Any new IIs go out recently? IIs seem to be very slow this year.

More like SDN activity in this thread is just down. Trying to judge what's actually happening based on SDN activity is probably super skewed.

Did anyone not hear back last Friday? I interviewed last week and we were supposed to get an email, but I haven't gotten anything. Nothing on the Communication Status tab on the app either.

That's weird...
I got an acceptance email on Friday, after having interviewed that same week. I was under the impression that everyone who interviewed prior to October 15 would hear back with some sort of decision on Friday.

My portal hasn't changed since I got the interview invitation though

I interviewed that Monday and they said that anyone that week would not hear back until December?
That's rather strange... I interviewed b/w October 12-16 and was told by students and my interviewers that we would hear back with a decision on Friday (the 16th), and sure enough, I did.

I'm an idiot. I posted thinking I was on the VCU thread. I have already heard back from UVA 🙂

Hey everyone! Just so y'all know, I bought a $300 plane ticket to the Charlottesville Airport from the West Coast. So not too bad of a deal actually! It would've been more expensive for me to fly into Washington or Richmond... lol

Do you guys/gals know around what time the school sends out decisions today?

Accepted earlier today!
Loved the school and very excited to get a yes!
LizzyM = 77

Anyone who was verified in July/Aug still pending decision?

Does UVA actually send out rejections? Or are they one of those schools who just reject everyone who wasn't interviewed at the end of their interview season?
