2015-2016 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected today as well. OOS 4.0 with 74% MCAT, ~19 creds a semester and working 20+ hours per week. New my MCAT would give me trouble, thought the rest of my application would give me a fair shot. Good luck to everyone else and with other schools, REALLY interested to hear what OOS could have done to get that elusive ii here

I'm sorry about that. OOS here as well. When were you complete? And good luck with the rest of your cycle.

I didn't realize they averaged MCATs, but I did abominable on my first take and way better on my second, so averaging them would give me a LizzyM of 69. And thanks for all the congrats everyone! This is my first II and very unexpected (especially after two early rejections), so keep your heads up! There's a lot of time left in the interview season ahead of us!

Yeah, only a handful of schools actually average MCAT scores. I'm closer to a Lizzy M 67 with averaged MCAT, rather than ~70 taking my most recent score. I think you are still well within their score range with what you have. Still plenty of time left in the cycle for the rest of us. I'm holding onto two IIs at the moment so I couldn't be happier despite the rejection. Good luck to the rest of you!

From last year's thread, people had success submitting at 12am. Where my fellow 'Sconnies at?

Ahh I have moving out stuff going on so I can't submit early tomorrow :/ not that a few hours really matters haha

Committee members are actually able to look at multiple MCAT scores as they please. They may average them, but they may also just look at the more recent one or just use the highest score of each section, or whatever. It is up to the individual 🙂
I don't know if this is how it has always been (maybe you have old information or were thinking of another school?) but this is how it works now.

I was getting it from other forums and posts, but according to the UW website they claim that, "most committee members average the scores. Some members consider the most recent score only. Others will consider the strongest sub-scores from multiple tests. In any case, committee members will be able to see scores from all of the MCAT tests you have taken recently."

Sounds like a very inconsistent method no matter how you look at it. If you are lucky, you will get a reviewer who doesn't follow the norm for UW and they might only consider your best score. This is why many schools have a steadfast approach to how they view multiple scores so that all applicants are reviewed under the same methodology.

Any other Wisconsinites having issues with LoR? They've been completed on AMCAS for months, but I don't have a green box on my newly-completed secondary to UWSMPH.

Directly from the UW secondary confirmation email:
"Due to the large number of applications, please allow 2-3 business days for our staff to make sure these items have been received."
Relax, it's the first day. Not to mention, a Saturday.. Your letters will be added.
Last year's thread probably has further insight.

Right, Im glad that the website is consistent with what I have just said, and that others on this forum now have the whole picture. Rest assured, every application is reviewed by several committee members, to assure consistency in reviewing. I agree that this policy is not as consistent as those at some other schools, but UWSMPH really embraces the holistic approach to application review, and therefore puts less emphasis on stats and how the committee members must view and weight MCAT scores and GPAs. And in the grand scheme of this entire, imperfect process, the way that one particular committee member views your MCAT scores will likely have no effect on the outcome of your application, as so so much more goes into it.

I just looked after submitting my app on Friday and my LOR's are still not in... Should I call them? They say allow one - two business days.. Anyone else Having this problem?

So I'm IS and submitted last Monday and I'm still not complete. Anyone else still having this issue?

What exactly do you mean by not complete? At the top of my secondary page it reads, "You have successfully completed the online portion of the UW-SMPH Secondary App." Is this what you are not seeing? I also have a green check mark by Processing Fee and All Letters Received. Still a red x by WI Residency Determination (not surprising . . . it takes a while!). If you don't have WI residency determined yet, that is to be expected.

I submitted my secondary very very early in the morning on the first day last year and it still took a month to verify my residency. So you are right, it does take a while! IS applicants just have to hang tight.

Do they have to verify residency before interviews are sent out for IS?

Even if IS can't turn in apps until a certain time, be reassured in the fact that there's still plenty of time between now and the first interview day. A good chunk of my grp was IS even on the first day when I interviewed. Later completion date does not = less of a shot of getting accepted... especially if you're from WI

So basically the IS applicants just get less notice ahead of time when their interview is?

The review process is different for OOS vs IS applicants because UW is required to have a class comprised of at least 75% in state. We have thousands of more OOS applicants to filter through than IS but we have to work under the same time line, so overall, there is no detriment to IS ppl who have to wait a few more weeks to be complete.

Tl;dr to answer your q, no, not necessarily. Unless there are last minute cancellations, they try to give at least 2 weeks notice to anyone who will be invited. The first interview date isn't until late September.

My understanding (correct me if I'm wrong @Jennyfishy ) is that IS and OOS applicants are put into entirely different "pools." So if everyone else in the IS pool has to wait to be verified as well, there is no disadvantage to you. It's just the waiting that is unpleasant.

Yes, that's correct 🙂 - I guess I didn't explain that clearly in my last couple posts. It's a tedious process filling out those verification forms, and it does take a while to verify, but keep in mind that majority of the applications are just now coming in, so it's pretty normal for the folks in the admissions office doing this to be a little backlogged at this point in the cycle.

So on the home page of my application it shows that 2/2 of my supplemental items have been received (MCAT scores and Letters of Rec). But when I go to investigate, only the Medical School Recommendation 1 is marked as received. I sent 3 letters total though... Is this just how it is supposed to be? I submitted this thing weeks ago and when I emailed admissions I didn't get a response.

You may have meant to post this in the Medical College of Wisconsin thread, this is the Univ. of Wisc. School of Medicine and Public Health thread 😛 I hope you emailed the correct school 😉

IS, marked complete yesterday! Submitted 8/15 (first day for in-state). Glad they aren't taking 5 weeks to do residency verification....

Hoping for good news soon!
Is your WI residency confirmed yet?

Yep, that's what I mean by "complete"... secondary, LORs, and residency (green check marks next to all three)
That's awesome! I submitted 8/15 at 12am and haven't received residency approval yet.
Edit: Complete 3/3 today
