2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry in advance if this info has already been posted somewhere on here, but for those of you who have sent updates, which email address did y'all send them to?

"The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Once a decision has been made on your profile, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update."

What is mean? Reject soon?

It is the 4th status...but i got an II out of that so not necessarily a reject.

Do they/ have they given out any post interview rejections? Or does it look like they're waiting until the end of the cycle?

As I understand it, once you have been presented/scored and assuming your score makes the first post-interview cut, VCU only sends out acceptances for notification dates (Oct 16, Dec 15, Feb 1, Mar 16). It does not mean you are rejected if you are not accepted on one of these dates- it just means you are deferred for possible acceptance on the next notification date. If you are not accepted by the last notification date in March, depending on your score you may be put on the waitlist or rejected. So assuming you've made that first post-interview cut and your file is put on hold, you won't be formally rejected until March.

Hey SDNers I called admission office today. Last interviews are during the Mon-Thurs of the last week of February. So for those that are looking for that precious II, there are a couple more weeks left before chances start significantly dwindling.

I wonder how that works for those of us who just got secondaries...

honestly, I don't think it matters. Just put your best foot forward. I have been complete since like forever and they said "they haven't reviewed my application yet", not calling them liars but if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck, its probably a goose. lol jk.

btw admissions also mentioned something about there being a 12 week deadline to hear back post-secondary. I silently laughed inside.

Does that mean if we do not receive IIs say by the end of this month, we are kind of done? 🙁(

If interviews are over soon and i haven't been reviewed, is it too late to ask for a refund?

Thanks for telling me that first part, I needed to hear it.

Yeah, despite being so far behind on their review process they keep insisting they'll get everything done. So I dunno.

When I called the office today, the woman insisted that if you got a secondary, you'll be reviewed in time for the end of interview season. I only just got my secondary a few days ago so I think it's too soon to ask for a refund, but I would wait at least a few more weeks to see if a refund is even necessary.

I know admissions is difficult because "there are a lot more qualified applicants than seats", but I would appreciate a more streamlined process for future applicants.

Well it seems like they were especially overwhelmed this year. Either way, I bet they also want a more streamlined process next year considering how many disgruntled applicants they've had to deal with this cycle, haha.

Okay so my status has changed to this and I am panicing cuz I never said I will be retaking the MCAT and I have graduated (taking English courses atm tho)! Does anyone else has the same status " hold for the following reason..." Or is it just me !

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile.

Please note that your file may be put on hold for several reasons:

Hold for MCAT means that we are assuming you are scheduled to take the test. The Committee wishes to wait to evaluate your file until those scores are available. MCATS taken after September of the year of application will not be considered. If you are not planning to take or retake the MCAT, please notify us immediately.

Hold for Grades: The file review done by the Committee has determined that you are engaged in coursework which may affect their decision about whether to invite you for an interview. It is imperative that you submit grades for current or proposed courses in a timely fashion. Any file on hold for grades that are not submitted by January 31st will automatically be rejected. If you did not take the course indicated on your primary or supplemental application, please notify us immediate

Doesn't everyone have this? Mine says this too, but I never gave any indication that I was going to retake the MCAT nor did I indicate I was going to take any coursework. It says your file MAY be put on hold for several reasons, but who knows with this school....

there's a bunch floating around SDN, just type "update letters sdn" into google something should pop up

The ADCOM is the front door to the med school and the only exposure 9,800 applicants (& 4,500 future physicians) will have of VCU. So VCU, make it a good one. You have some work to do here.

Later on Match Day 2020.

"The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

Hello guys I was wondering, who has submitted their fall semester grades to VCU and to whom do we send our grades

I called the admissions office about a week ago to ask this, and they told me to email grade updates to Dr. Whitehurst-Cook (address on the website).

so got a status change today. Almost gave up. Is this the 3rd status? Hopes of getting an II are very slim but least Ive been reviewed. Been complete since July 27th

II just now! Beyond excited. Lizzy <70 OOS. Completed secondary around 07/08 of 2015. Just finished cooking my meal and was about to go to sleep another night in anxiety. Had a status update about 2 days ago (the one ranked second noted above ^). Don't give up hope!

Does vcu notify you if they aren't sending you a secondary? I feel like an idiot asking if there is hope left to receive a secondary when there are only weeks left of interview slots...

But seriously, was I rejected if the committee never sent me a secondary and my status still says they're going to begin the process of evaluation?

I just got my secondary last week and VCU assures me I still have a shot at their school.

Have you called them about your lack of a secondary? Because they will reject you pre-secondary.

I just got the secondary not too long ago as well so I'm a little bit anxious about them saying that lor's may take a few weeks to process. Is the last set of interviews in Feb? Sorry if this has been asked before.

My LORs were actually already uploaded when I got my secondary, check that section to see if yours are as well.

Last set is in February, yep.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeek. I wonder how last minute schools extend interviews when they stop interviewing in Feb 🙁

I just received a rejection pre-secondary.

I got that number 4 or 5 interview response (lowest one.... we'd like to interview you but there are many applicants etc).... would sending a letter of intent help???

Not if you haven't interviewed yet. VCU only accepts updates on grades and publications.

got 3rd status 12/31 and haven't heard anything since

has anyone had any luck recently going from 3rd status or below > interview?

What about the submission of a manuscript (no formal publication yet)?

I had a similar circumstance and I called admissions to see if it would be ok. They said sure and gave me an email address to send it to. They seem receptive as long as it is something along the lines of a publication!

I think VCU cares about using their interview and review time wisely. There is little point in interviewing a student from NC who will be accepted at UNC at 1/2 the cost or a student from CA with a MLizzy of 77. Now a student from NC with a borderline MLizzy for UNC is someone they may go after. Unfortunately rejecting well qualified students is part of the process as they don't want to interview 2,000 applicants to end up with the same class as interviewing 1000 will get them. If you are well qualified and VCU is high on your list you need to let them know. My guess is this happens a lot and med schools know which subset of applicants they are going to get.

Unfortunately the delay "turns off" students that are interested in VCU. Rejecting well qualified students also turns off future physicians from VCU. If I were King of the adcom I would review all applications within 2-3 weeks for a secondary and 2-3 weeks for an II. Low yield students would be asked why VCU? I would offer them an II in September but schedule a February interview so they would have time to cancel if accepted to a school higher on their list. The ones still interested would come and those not interested would decline the II but feel good about VCU for offering them one.

I interviewed in December and received the post-interview survey status a couple weeks ago. Today my status changed to this "The Admissions Committee has met to discuss your file. Your application is being placed on hold for possibleacceptance at a later date. We anticipate making offers around October 16, December 15, February 1, and March 16. If any of these dates falls on a weekend the offers will be made on the following Monday. Only offers of admission will be made on the dates above." For others who have interviewed is this a normal status? It's making me nervous

I just got the same update, kind of made me nervous too. But I think it's just VCU's way of saying we'll know the final decision on Feb 1st which is what I was told at my interview, doesn't neccessarily mean acceptance/waitlist/denial

Very cool answer. I wonder why yield is taken so seriously (I am an SDN n00b).
