2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My profile says that I am "currently being reviewed by the sub-committee." How long did other people's applications remain under review, and how long did it take for an update after the review was complete?

If you've been following this thread, you'll know that it totally varies. 🙁 You could get an update after 2 weeks or 3 months.

Well shucks. I was thinking that once my application was officially under review (not waiting to be reviewed) that things might become a little more definitive... But I guess not.

When did you complete? I have been complete since early August

Has anyone gotten this message?

The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. If your status changes, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update.

I feel bad for them a little bit. Sounds stressful.

Every time I call they assure me I'm still in the running.
+1

I even emailed the dean to see if there was even going to be any interview slots left if I ever manage to get a secondary. She assured me that there would still be plenty of them left... I am still skeptical though

Very sorry to hear that 🙁 did you get one of the 4 statuses beforehand or just get the bad news right away? You'll make it somewhere else!
I was notified with the standard "status has changed" message. I had the "May" status a long while back, not sure the exact date. I've already been accepted to several programs and II's at others, so no worries.

ah ok thanks. All the best with your future med school career.

+1 except I was complete in early August. In fact one of my friends is still waiting since the second week of July for the sub-committee to review him....

This may be a little harsh but it seems that nobody at VCU's adcom seem to be interested in working for their paychecks....

In fairness, I respect their attempt at transparency for us applicants, despite the obvious irony here

You aren't the first person to feel this way, so this isn't just a response for you. But after interviewing here, I left thinking that the VCU adcom works incredibly hard. I realize it's easy to feel like your own application has been lost in the shuffle, but VCU is incredibly thorough with their reviews and it takes a lot of time to review well. Don't give up on them if it's a school you really want.

The whole application process is unnerving, but please remember:

1. you don't have to complete or pay for a secondary if you don't have a shot at an interview
2. there are no numeric cutoffs; if you have what it takes for a secondary, you will be reviewed
3. the review is done personally and thoroughly, often with help from M4 volunteers who know what kind of person they'd want on the team next year
4. many "what are my chances" and "non-trad" threads describe VCU as a reinvention school, so they get a lot of candidates whose files are complex
5. if you aren't selected for admission, you can schedule a 1:1 with the director of admissions to discuss how to do better next time (my Brown and U of Chicago rejection letters basically say "don't contact us to discuss your application for any reason, we won't do anything about it")
6. they routinely acknowledge mistakes or errors - above all other things, I think that reveals just how reflective and honest the school is

I know you probably didn't want a 5 paragraph essay in response to your comment. Apologies. Just want to put the paycheck/waiting/frustration comments in perspective.

Good luck.

Moved into the "is currently under review" status some time this morning. Complete around 9/2/15, no emails.

Post interview survey today - does this mean our app just got scored 1-5 or have the 4&5s been rejected by this point? (Interviewed on 11/2)

Nope; after survey you should either be rejected or placed on post interview hold. I interviewed 11/5 and was updated today although I was told during my interview that I should expect an update to post interview hold/rejection the following Monday or the Monday after. That didn't happen and I was updated today, so it may take longer than you expect.

I wish they could do something...it is frustrating when I read that someone who was complete a 2-4 weeks after me have a status change while I am almost on my 4th month waiting for some sort of news. Additionally, I called them last week to inquire if anyone has read my app, and unsurprisingly it was gathering dust :hungover:

That person might have had better scores so was read first? I know some schools use formulas to rank apps and read them in that order - idk if Vcu is one of them

Has anyone who interviewed the week of 11/2 or after received a post interview hold status?

Interviewed here yesterday and I really enjoyed my experience. Facilities were all brand new, by far the most technologically advanced school I've visited and their simulation center is massive. All the students seemed super happy to be there and admissions (although people on this thread may not agree) are definitely doing their best to review each application as thoroughly as possible. Very impressed nonetheless.

Does anyone know if there is a preferred method of sending thank you letters to interviewers? I had a very positive experience with mine and was hoping there would be a way to get in touch...

I just emailed my interviewer (she gave me her email address).

I'm a med student here at VCU. Good luck to you guys and let me know if you have any questions.

I've read a lot of people complaining about the ADCOM not doing much, getting frustrated about no status updates. Know that going through 9000 applications is not a joke. If someone got a status update, interview but submitted later than you most likely their application is stronger than yours.

It's very easy for pre-meds to think that the admission folks need to revamp, work for their money and whatever else some of you have typed. The hard working folks at VCU admissions have been doing this for decades and produced some great physicians from VCU. Trust me when I say they know what they are doing. It's important to just stay patient.

Thank you for answering questions!

As an out-of-stater, one thing I'm always concerned about for all my OOS schools is cost of attendance. Could you provide some insight on scholarship opportunities at VCU? Do you know of any OOS students who were able to eventually switch to in-state residency?

Cost of attendance is important to some degree. I can understand it being a big concern especially since a decent number of specialties are getting paycuts due to the whole healthcare reform.
I'm going to be very honest with you in that switching to in-state residency is possible but rarely happens. The VCU financial aid office has certain criteria that I'm not aware of but you can call and ask (either way it's tough to switch but I've heard of a couple students doing it).
Scholarship opportunities at VCU are plentiful. I get an overwhelming number of emails about scholarships from the financial aid office almost every other day to the point that I stopped reading those emails.
VCU has a lot of opportunities for you to cut your tuition down.

In the end of the day take my advice on this, don't just pursue an out of state school because it's cheap. Medical school is pretty tough. I think the most important thing is to find a school where you'll be happy.

As a 4th year medical student here's my advice on what will make medical school easier and what you should look for in an OOS or even an IS program:
-Try to stay close to friends and family. You really do need the support system. Some days, weeks and even months will be extremely rough. I've had days especially during 3rd year where I felt depressed, overworked, lonely, tired and my family pulled me through.

-Pay a lot of attention to curriculums. Try to avoid schools that force mandatory stuff. In the end of the day no one can shuv all of this information down your throat even if they teach you countless hours in the class. You need some time for you to sit down and learn the information.

-Find a school that gives you a decent amount of time for dedicated study time for the boards. VCU gives its students over 6-8 weeks (not exactly sure what the new time is this year) of time to study for USMLE Step 1 and that gives you a huge edge compared to students that only have 3-4 weeks of dedicated time. You won't realize this until you're a 4th year medical student and applying to residency but board scores matter a lot. You need high board scores to get into top level programs in any specialty or any program at all in the competitive specialties (Derm, Ortho, ENT, Plastics, Optho etc...)

-In the end of the day I would pick a laid back school where I'm happy and pay $50k a year than an uptight school where I wouldn't be as happy for 30k. If you're in a city where you're unhappy then trust me those 4 years of medical school are going to feel like a decade and take the same toll on you. I can't emphasize that point enough. I guess the question would be well how do you find out if you'd be happy just by a simple interview? Spend an extra day or two in the city to explore, see if you connect with the people in the city/school, attend second look if you think you like a certain medical school. Spending the extra $100-200 bucks will save you 4 years of pain under hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of loans.

-Money is important but realize that this journey of medical school is an extremely long one. If you have to pay a few more bucks to have a better decade of medical education then who cares. In the end you'll be a doctor making > 200k on average and that's more than enough to pay for student loans. A lot of kids cry and complain about student loans but it's very manageable especially with all of the repayment plans that are out there (I don't want to go into too much detail on this topic since I'm no expert on the matter).
