2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
LOL only 6 weeks? I've been waiting for over 18. 😛 Yes, I called and the way their initial review process works is that your primary is submitted to a single reviewer who decides whether or not you get a secondary. So how long it takes to receive a secondary depends on how long it takes for your reviewer to get to your application. For me, it took about 14/15 weeks for it to even be checked out, and has apparently been checked out ever since (according to my call last week). The office keeps assuring me that I haven't been rejected.

Feel free to call for an update, but they won't give you that much information. Plus, most people wait 6-12 weeks fora status update (so it hasn't even been that long for you), and also their offices closed on the 18th for the holidays...so no one will be there to answer your call!

lol its actually be nine, thats why i wrote six plus! thanks for the heads up, I'll be calling after the New Year! and hey, at least they've been letting you know you haven't been rejected yet - that's a plus. Good luck to you and @takeonme!

So. I got a SECONDARY today. I was marked complete in early August. Since that time, I've been through the entire application cycle... interviewing (even at an Ivy!!) and got accepted to my top choice school, where I will be attending.

... and here VCU sends me a secondary 3 days before Christmas? I'm sorry. But I feel like this school is just jerking my chain. 😵
Cool story

They are not the most efficient, and the acceptance email was the most inane correspondence ever. I've withdrawn, the school and academic med center were okay, but the administration really left a bad taste for me. Good luck to all still waiting.

Anyone have any luck getting interviews with priority #3?

I feel that the OOS people with priority #3 will unlikely get an interview. I am one of those people who got the "continue to review" pile since the beginning of November, and no status updates have occurred since.

+1

I had a really great experience on the interview and was really impressed with the program and how student-centric it seemed to be, but I have to admit that the admin side has started to sour that impression.

Agreed completely. Even the interview day was more inefficient than any of the other places I've attended. There were way too many interviewees and the adcom staff seemed uninterested and unengaged on my day, at least. It's a shame that the process is like this because VCU Med is obviously a great school.

I'm getting the feeling that a lot of schools, VCU included, were pretty unprepared for the volume of applications this cycle. Curious how they'll handle it in the future (especially if I end up re-applying lol).
Seems like lots of schools are super behind.

i dont think its the volume of applicants but comparing the new mcat vs old

Withdrew my application today. I hope one of you get my interview spot! Good luck everyone!

Honestly, that's a bummer, but what can you do. *shrugs*
I have 3 post-interview rejections so far, so the idea of another interview sends chills down my spine.

However, I gratefully have that acceptance I needed. I am so relieved either way.

Exactly. Just one interview and one acceptance and I'll be the happiest ever!

Has anyone been put on "FILE COMPLETE" status months ago and still not heard anything? I would assume this means no interview by now

that's my status as well - apparently VCU takes a while to review applications.

Accepting an offer of admission is non-binding, as with other schools, correct?

Got an email about a status change today..... checked the portal to find out I've been rejected. Got the 3rd priority status on 12/16 but I guess they decided to cut their losses and clean house the week after Christmas. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Already been accepted elsewhere and after reading other experiences on this thread I'm not too bothered. Good luck to all still in the running!

Is there anyone who STILL has this status?

"Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile."

Literally have had this as my portal status since mid-October.

Mine is still undergoing a preliminary review to see if I will receive a secondary

I was on that exact status since I was complete in the beginning of August all the way until today - I was just switched to the "may" status this evening.

I got a status change to one of the five statuses today.

It's not even at that point yet, lol. Like, they haven't scored it yet basically.
I don't know, did you get any of the following messages?
---
Application Statuses:

1) "The Committee's file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. There is another increase in the applicant pool this year, but we are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviewed as soon as possible. Please watch for an e-mail from us regarding a possible interview date."

2) "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail."

3) "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

4) "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

5) "REJECTED"

-----

If you didn't get any of the above statuses, they haven't scored your app yet.
I got the third status

I just checked online, and I was offered an interview. However, it was withdrawn since I didn't respond in time. I did not receive any notification for the invite, so I had no idea. Has anyone had luck with calling admissions in order to still have the interview?

I think others have had luck getting them to re-issue their II. VCU seems pretty aware they've had technical problems. Can't hurt to try!

Does it matter if we schedule at the beginning of January vs the end?

generally if you can schedule earlier, the better it is

Are acceptances given as the days go on? Or is there a period at the end of the month where they review all the applicants they interviewed for that month? If so scheduling later shouldn't be a huge disadvantage correct?

Acceptance days are Feb 1st and March 16th. If you interview beginning of Jan you can be accepted in Jan or March. Otherwise you are waiting until March

Did anyone receive an email saying their file status changed, then checked and the status remained the same?

Lol I JUST received the secondary last night...4.5 months later. This is the slowest response time I've ever seen. I already have some acceptances, so I withdrew from here. Good luck to the rest of you!

16 II! I wish I was as lucky as you! I just want one and one acceptance but congrats to you!

Discovered my status change a couple days ago was apparently an interview! I had the #2 update message mid December about them possibly not interviewing everyone at my priority score.

Is it true that VCU is not receptive to pre-interview update letters? I currently have the third status on my portal.

Their website lists a contact for "Status Updates and Questions," but I don't know if that necessarily means that they're receptive to hearing about what I've been doing for the past four months

On the VCU School of Medicine FAQ, this is what it says:

  • Does VCU accept update letters to applications for admission?
The only updates that we accept are grades from courses that were completed after an application was submitted and academic publication material that was published after an application was submitted. We do not accept letters of interest.
So it sounds like they do accept pre-interview updates as long as they are only related to grades/coursework.

no change at all to my status. It's been 4 months. I havent gotten any May, Further, or any other status. bummer.
