2015-2016 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree with Mountaineer, I'm from Colorado with absolutely no ties to WV or any neighboring states, but I'll be matriculating next month. For those with no ties, they are really looking for fit.

They definitely give IS preference, but OOS applicants (including those with no ties) are by no means automatically excluded.

Anyone have any info on how many people get screened out? I've seen some other schools post the % info

So they determined we are not a good fit for their school based on our primary? How? Do they have a giant stat cutoff for OOS or something?

I couldn't say if they have a stat cut-off for OOS and if they do, whether it changes from year to year. But, as far as looking for fit in the primary it's possible that they focus on PS, activities, and LORs. WVU is really big on service.

Half of my personal statement talks about service..... and I got screened out plus I have a a lot of service EC's as well. I'm just going to call them on Monday and ask why I was screened out. I bet they are going to just say "you have no ties to WVU".

I'm sorry to hear that 🙁 maybe in your case it is just the lack of ties. In my experience, their admissions office has been super helpful so I would definitely encourage you to call. Best of luck to you with your other applications!!

Thanks. I'm hoping they give me some good feedback.

What about the mission should we fit?
I think there's a mission somewhere on the website. It's something about serving West Virginians and rural health.

That makes no sense. It seems their major reason for rejecting applicants pre-secondary is that we arent from the east side of the USA or have strong ties to it. Maybe those 5 people from the west coast have strong ties like close family members in the east coast. Those west coasters in your class would have still gotten interviews then.

Read the above email.
There's also been multiple people in here who have said they're from neighboring states and were rejected. The people from the West Coast in my class did NOT have any ties to WV as far as I know. However, I believe a few of them are involved in the rural health program, which supports my statement that they are very concerned with finding people who fit their mission and may stay in WV versus people who just want to get an MD and move back to where they came from. I just don't want people from far away states to be discouraged from applying because you never know.

Does anyone know if being a Pittsburgh-are resident counts as "close-ties" to WV? I live only 1.5 hrs from the school
Unfortunately it doesn't. I'm also from Pittsburgh. It will help that you're from nearby though, I just wouldn't list it in the significant ties question personally.

@Mountaineer12 So by "significant ties" what do they mean? Are they referring to personal relationships with people in WV... I just don't understand. Thanks for your previous response

I believe they're talking about time spent in WV (like for undergrad or summer camp or something like that) or family in WV. For instance, I was OOS, but went to WVU for undergrad and was working there during my year off so I could become a resident of WV. Other people listed aunts or uncles they have living in WV. It probably wouldn't hurt to ask someone in student services though because this is just the assumption I made back when I applied.

Please let us know what they say! I'm OOS, no ties expecting a rejection soon...

I talked to the Dean. It has nothing to do with ties or anything like that apparently. She said I had a strong application with no red flags though...

The main issue is that this year they've received too many applications from Out of Staters this year and they are more swamped with applications than they have been before. I asked her where I could significantly improve... she basically said there was no particular area that I could improve my app as the whole thing looked fine.

So take what you will from that.

Edit: I would like to add that "OOS" in this case does not exclude people surrounding the state.

The mission of the school is to serve the region apparently.

Edit: Ok it looks like people from other states are getting it too... My only logical conclusion then is that you need a super super strong app if you are OOS non region? Idk

msar says that they are 4 LOR's max but I can't find anything about that on their admissions website. are they strict about that?

They prefer a committee letter if your school has a committee. If not, they require 3 letters of your choice. You may send one additional optional letter for a total of 4, but yes 4 is the maximum.

See the letters header (Item 4 just below the premed coursework requirements)

the year i applied (class of 2017) the info i was given was roughly 3000 applicants total: 200 WV for about 80 spots, and 2800 OOS for about 30 spots. now, i know recently there have been more OOS acceptances than normal. i can also tell you that we have a new admissions asst as well as dean of admissions, so things may change, but i would suspect them to be similar to recent trends. OOS is a tough way to go, but its definitely doable. if you dont apply you will not get accepted, that is a sure thing.

OOS applicant, just got interview invite a few minutes ago. No significant ties to the state (just the Southeast). Good luck to everyone.

For the secondary, did you guys submit a separate word document for each essay question? That's what I did, but I was unsure if they wanted one document with all the essays.

OOS here and received my secondary this morning. Have direct ties to WV (undergrad & a family member).

Just wondering -- is anyone else having issues w/ the page not loading whenever clicking each section's "fill out online form"? I know for all the other sections you can just send them an e-mail, but for the WV ties and "banner" section (I'm not sure what this is) I'm guessing you have to be able to access the online form? Does anyone have any idea about this?

Thanks in advance. I will say that I'm overseas so it may just be me...

I've been able to access everything without difficulty. And the "Banner" section is just basic info - name, address, demographic, program, etc.

Also, this might be a dumb question, but it would seem that the online application sends everything to the email account. Do we need to send in anything directly by email? The instructions made it sound like the essays would just be provided for you to write and send in but this does not seem to be the case.

Thank you for your input. 🙂 I called the number in the secondary invite and the person I spoke with did say there have been some glitches for Mac users. However, I think for my case it's just that I'm overseas. Hopefully they'll give me the WV ties prompt & banner info via e-mail and then allow me to just directly e-mail them...

I would guess that if the online application sends everything to the e-mail account, then there would be no need to directly send the essays via e-mail. From what I understand, you have the option of sending your photo & essays directly via e-mail (as an attached document) if you don't use the online application forms. However I suppose this may be a question for someone else who's less confused to answer, lol.

Makes sense. It's been sending me confirmation emails for everything, so I'm going to assume they're going through.

Thanks. Best of luck with your application!

Got an II today. My question is, how exactly does this school do IIs? From what I heard, a large amount of people receive interviews, and only a few are admitted.

Scheduled an interview for Sept. 2. OOS (Maine) with no ties to WV.
I received my secondary 7/13 and submitted it this morning.

Maaaaan. I was almost done.

Ah well, my ideas were too dystopian anyway.

OOS applicant here, I just got my invitation to complete the secondary (yay!). Don't worry, the essays are the same as posted! Be warned though, if you haven't gotten the invite yet, there is a 2 week deadline to complete it. I like the format although it is a little unconventional. You submit after each stage of the application and after each of the essays.

Good luck to all applying!

That is incredibly fast! How long after your submission did you get the invitation email?
Congratulations!

In my email invite to complete a secondary, they also talked A LOT about how my AMCAS matched their mission. I am also an OOS applicant so I agree that this must be a big deal for them with OOSs.

That is correct. If you're OOS there's a good chance you'll be on the waitlist first. Don't get discouraged, most OOSers are out on the waitlist and about 30-40% of the class ends up being OOS.

Question, I marked on AMCAS that I wanted to apply MD/PhD. I got the MD Secondary, so I Sent it in, but haven't figured out the phd side of things... I got the II today just for MD. How do I proceed from here?
