2015-2016 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OOS applicant, just got interview invite a few minutes ago. No significant ties to the state (just the Southeast). Good luck to everyone.

Are you an Early Decision or Regular Decision applicant? I have been seeing a lot of "same day" or "next day" IIs from people who submitted secondaries, but no one has mentioned if they are ED or RD. It would be good to know if I should start freaking out as I haven't gotten an II yet and I submitted yesterday. 😱

relax. i bet almost everyone is regular decision. i imagine they're getting a bit backlogged so don't worry.

As an OOS, and with no ties to WV I have no idea what to put, any ideas?? I actually lived most of my life in another country !

II this morning as well! First of the season.

Got an interview September 3rd. Anybody else gonna be there on that day? Btw OOS applicant regular admissions.

wow that was quick! submitted last night, just received an II!

I still haven't gotten a secondary wondering if got screened out
Nvm just got it

It looks like August 2nd was the earliest date but that it's locked now and the next soonest one you could be waitlisted for is 9/2. I'm seeing 9/24 as the earliest available date as of right now (as in open and no waitlist).

Anyone using MedStay?

Anyone using MedStay?

considering MedStay, not 100% though- is there on campus housing for students?

Also, do you know how the waitlist feature works? I have a spot for end of Sept. but am trying to get an earlier position...how soon beforehand can they give a notice? Scared to book a hotel/car right now with a waitlist

Maybe current students if you're around 🙂, but can anyone chime in on living situations? Is there a specific complex that MS1s are typically in to start? Suggestions?

Kind of going crazy all day reading about them...haha

There is not on campus housing, everyone loves all around Morgantown, with the largest number living near the hospital (you can walk to almost everything the first two years and most of the third and fourth). I didn't do MedStay because I lived in Morgantown already, but I've heard such good things about it. The student you stay with can answer all of your questions! If you decide to go with a hotel, most of them let you cancel within 24 hours so you should be okay!

Ah, I was looking at the website and they had a few different complexes and it mentioned grad students living there, really liked college park, oh well

You definitely can live there, they're just really, really overpriced from what I've heard so most people don't. University Park is the closest to the hospital (probably. 5 minute walk). They're also very new so maybe some people in the class starting next week (2019) will live there. Most people in my class moved into surrounding apartment complexes and haven't moved.

even though i probably will be waitlisted as i am OOS, but ehh what the heck..first II in two years!!!!

I live in NJ, submitted my secondary yesterday got an interview today. Weird

I spoke with one of the AdComs today because there was an issue with my fee payment (which was a heart attack in itself), but apparently they review the applications from the previous day every morning. So you could potentially submit on Tuesday night and get an II on Wednesday. I didn't ask but they must have reviewed our AMCAS's in detail and are now only looking at the secondary essays. I finally got my secondary complete today, so hopefully I get some love tomorrow!!!

Shame I didnt see the "due and two weeks" part when I skimmed their email. I was going to submit it today (2 weeks and 1 day old). Oh well

I think this happened last year and it was no big deal. Just submit and don't worry about it. I think that deadline is just so people return it within a reasonable amount of time.

OOS, just got II yesterday!! Submitted Friday, see y'all Oct. 19th!

I just had this issue. I finished the application but my fee did not go through. They emailed me yesterday (after the deadline) to let me know it was still missing, but if I submitted it that day, I would still be in good standing. I submitted yesterday and got an II this afternoon!! That was only for the fee though and I was only 1 day late. I am not sure about the whole app being late, but they seem really nice so I would go for it.

If you have no ties to WV do you just leave that blank?
Yes! Don't try to make anything up or stretch the truth or anything. Either leave it blank or put in a simple sentence about not having any significant ties.

Anyone get an II yesterday or today?

Yup exactly what I did 🙂...lying trying to get into medical school seems silly
Definitely, and there are lots of people in my class who didn't have any ties so it's not an automatic rejection or anything. It's more like bonus. If you have some ties, great, if not they'll still look at your app and consider you for sure.

First interview invite of the season received here today 07/30. I was complete 07/28 late at night.

So excited! Hope to see some of you guys there in a couple months

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in and application to the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine (SOM). Your AMCAS application and supporting information have been received, and after a holistic review of your application, we are unable to extend an invitation for a secondary application. As you may or may not be aware, the WVU School of Medicine is a land-grant institution and, as such, strong preference is given to West Virginia (WV) residents and out of state residents with strong ties to the state. If you have additional compelling information, including evidence of strong WV ties, you may submit those in writing to [email protected] for further review.

This in no way implies that you are unsuited for a career in medicine but rather it is an acknowledgement of certain constraints and realities in the admission process at our School of Medicine.

If you wish to formally discuss your application, please contact us at 304-293-1439/800-543-5650 to make an appointment with Dr. Norman D. Ferrari (Vice Dean for Education and Academic Affairs), Dr. Scott Cottrell (Associate Dean for Student Services and Curriculum), Dr. Linda S. Nield (Assistant Dean for Admissions), or Dr. Mark Paternostro (Chair, Committee on Admission). Any of these members of the department will be able to provide you some guidance and insight into your application.

Thank you for your interest in the WVU School of Medicine.

So much nicer than GUs rejection...."we have decided to not offer you an interview. We're busy. We can't tell you why. It's a secret"

EDIT: sorry though, I know how blah it feels right after an email like this 🙁
