2015-2016 Yale University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm pretty positive reading somewhere that the waitlist is actually 100+ people so seeing the 75-85 number was a surprise. I do think it's the number of people who were accepted off the wait list.

Also, did anyone's letter mention where they are on the waitlist? I ask because digging deep through previous threads, some waitlist letters told them they were "High Priority" but things may be different now..

Under the "Acceptance information tab", there is a blue box called "Waitlist Information" below "Deposit Information" and above "Matriculation Data for First Year Class"

Is anybody else having trouble with the Yale-specific financial aid app? It's telling me not to submit it until I print the Certificate Information Form, but it's giving me an error when I try to open it. Also, have we gotten Yale ID Numbers yet? Looks like we need that for another one of the forms.

Where is the Yale-specific financial aid app? I thought we just needed to submit FAFSA and Need Access, and the parents' and student's 2015 Tax Returns. Also has anyone submitted the IRS documents to the financial aid office? If so, which email did you use? I got an error when I used the email they have on their website.

We are in the same boats, brownu6782, haha

Waitlisted, interviewed in February, LizzyM 74
hahaha yea first they had me all excited by giving me and interviews, then they are all like...

Honored and humbled to have been accepted at this fine institution :soexcited:

Considering going for the second look weekend but the airline tickets from the West are so expensive 🙁

Does anyone happen to know roughly what percentage of the interviewees are waitlisted, rejected, and accepted?

According to MSAR they waitlist 75-85 people

From what I understand, they accept 1/3, waitlist 1/3, and reject 1/3, so I'm not sure exactly what the MSAR number reflects. I *think* they've gotten rid of the "high priority" waitlist (or, at the very least, telling candidates about it) but I'm not sure...

Fly to NYC and take the Metro North to New Haven. It's by far the cheapest option, especially since flights to NYC are generally decently priced since it's such a big hub

What day can they see where else you've been accepted? a Are you less likely to be accepts if you've gotten a better offer somewhere else?

I believe tomorrow if schools are actually looking into that sort of thing.

https://www.aamc.org/admissions/admissionslifecycle/409120/trafficrules.html

I have asked this question in the past and on one of the threads someone wrote what the traffic rules mean and I am paraphrasing below.

Everyone in AMCAS is supposed to know tomorrow where someone has been admitted.

However, those schools where someone is holding a waitlist spot know where the person is admitted but those who have admitted someone don't know where someone is holding a waitlist spot.

Could a current Yale student post about finding off-campus housing/roommates as a first year? I'm unclear on when I should start thinking about this/where to look. Also, I'm on some waitlists, and I'm not sure if I should wait a while to sign a lease, or if that will mean I'll have bad housing options for next year.

I'm not a student there, but I know that some students live in University Towers and New Haven Towers. They're about a 5 minute walk from Yale Med's "campus" and hospital.

Is anyone else as anxious as I am about this financial aid package being on the way?

A bit, but I don't think it's gonna influence my decision one way or the other. I'm pretty set on Yale. The best scholarship offer I got elsewhere was not enough for me to forego a seat in Yale's class.

Also I've heard Yale gives great aid.

The towers next to the medical school are pretty pricy but it all depends on each one's financial aid I guess, and whether folks are pairing up with roommates.

A lot of students choose to live on campus during the first year, but the towers (Crown, Crown Court, and Madison) are also a common option. They're fairly expensive with studio apartments alone ranging from $1125-$1395: http://newhaventowers.com/rate-sheet/. If you share an apartment, the cost is split. In my experience, living in downtown New Haven is going to be around $1000 if you live in a studio, with 1 bedrooms being somewhat more expensive. If you have roommates you might pay anywhere from 500-1200 for a room, depending on the building -- closer to 1000 is more common. Buildings that are cheaper (the Elmhurst, anything owned by Pike) tend to have pretty terrible management, which can be a problem when your heater breaks in the middle of winter, a frozen pipe bursts, or you have a ceiling leak. Pricier places tend to have good, reliable management (like Elm Campus and the Towers) but you might pay up to 1,200 for a single bedroom in a shared apartment. There are some older houses where you can lease a room along Howe, George, and Dwight. These tend to start around $500, but that really depends on what kind of privacy and set-up you're looking for. If you're down to live with 3-4 other people, I'd check craigslist for those options. Unfortunately (I hate to be the bearer of bad news), New Haven rent prices have consistently surprised me... and not in a good way.

Also! If anyone has any questions about areas of New Haven -- which ones are safe etc. -- please feel free to PM me with apartment listings/addresses etc. I have a good amount of experience (multiple years) with the city and have lived in multiple locations with multiple landlords.

(Edit: just to clarify, I think New Haven is overall a pretty safe city, though I am from a very urban area. Some areas will have weird random occurrences like the shooting that happened on campus over the weekend, but there are other areas that should be avoided.)

Does anyone know where we get our Yale ID number for the certification form?

Is anyone else having difficulty emailing the IRS documents to their email? I keep getting the error: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently
It worked fine for me. ysmfinaid at yale dot edu

Do any current students or prospectives know if the financial aid information have traditionally come out before or after Second Look?

during the interview they said it would be before SLW so that people get a chance to discuss their package during the visit.

Can Yale see where else we got in? Also do they see what program/offer we got from the other school? As in, if we've been accepted to do an MD/PhD at another school, will they see that it's that specifically, or is it just that "XXXXX school accepted me"

Did anybody get a response after sending the financial aid office their tax documents? I got an automated one saying that they received my email and they would respond in 1-3 days, but nothing since...

They're not done with the awards, that's likely why. You can call and check if your application has been marked as complete. We're supposed to hear regarding the packages before or around second look.

Cool. I'm just paranoid they never received my documents since I didn't get a reply. Guess it can't hurt to call and ask though! Thanks.

From what I've heard, they're trying to prepare the packages for Second Look. It's difficult for them because Second Look is significantly earlier than it was last year (by two weeks), so it doesn't sound like they will come out significantly before then. For everyone who's attending Second Look, they will be prepared since you get to sit down with someone from Financial Aid to discuss the package.

Are there any travel grants to help with the costs of traveling to SLW?
I did not qualify for Fee Assistance Program but my financial situation has changes since I applied

You could contact the office of multicultural affairs to check whether they could assist you. I know in the past they've allotted $$ for flight reimbursement up to a certain amount.

I would also encourage you to reach out to Director Silverman, especially if your financial situation has changed significantly since applying.

Got word that Silverman will be releasing waitlist tiers soon, sometime around second look. It will be by phone. Good luck!

Where did you hear that from?

I would imagine after Second Look. I can't imagine that Admissions will have the time to field the phone calls before Second Look, which is Thursday/Friday of next week (Apr. 7/8). I could be wrong, though.

Heard from a current student who's close to Silverman. It will definitely be after second look because people will start withdrawing then and Silverman also asks you if you'd like to stay on the WL when he calls. Unsure if everybody gets a call, though, just putting that out there!!

Has anyone received a financial aid package notification the mail yet? According to last year's thread the first person got their notification on 3/30
