2016-2017 Albany Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will re-ask this as I believe it was lost in the mass of previous posts...

Can a current student discuss the possibility for setting up your own rotations? I did not see very many electives between MS3 and MS4.

I'm a current student, but I'm only an MS1. I don't know a lot about it, but from what I've been told, we have 4 elective rotations all during 4th year. Some people do away rotations in this time.

Ahh I misread the curriculum plan. Thank you. For some reason I thought it was only 1 elective for 4 weeks in MS4.

Yeah when I first read it I thought the same thing, it is kinda spaced out weird on the map. And no problem! And good luck!

Rejection here today, although I was at the beach enjoying the last warmth before fall so it was a tad less painful.

Good luck to everyone who survived today!!!

Can't say for sure, but for all schools it is October 15th, although some don't release any decisions on this date and wait a few weeks.

I believe it's October 17th this year as the 15th is a Saturday.

Hi! I'm a current 2nd year student actively involved with the adcom and interview process. Most of the core rotations you have to do at AMC or the associated hospitals around in the area. For your Family Med rotation though you can choose to do an away at any hospital that you want if there is a physician there that is willing to take you. For 4th year, it's pretty much all electives that you can choose to do at AMC or away. Hope it helps!

Sorry to everyone who got rejected. Mind posting what the e-mail looked like?

"I regret to inform you that you have not been selected for interview this year at Albany Medical College.

It is important to know that your application was carefully evaluated. It is a responsibility that we take very seriously. All information available to us was taken into account when a decision was made. Strong MCAT scores and high levels of academic achievement do not guarantee an interview or admission.

To help guide you in assessing your own credentials, it may be helpful to know that the mean undergraduate grade point average of our present freshman class is 3.6, and their MCAT score averages for the old format are 9.85 verbal, 10.5 physical science, and 10.8 biology. MCAT score averages for the new format are Biological and Biochemical Foundations and Living Systems 127.95, Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems 126.82, Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior 127.26, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills 127.52. This is composite data; therefore, there are applicants who have generally demonstrated both higher and lower levels of achievement in these assessment areas. If an applicant has weaker than average credentials in one area, these are typically offset by much stronger results in another area.

This year we anticipate receiving nearly 9,000 applications. Unfortunately, we must restrict the number of applicants we interview to approximately 1,000 from which a class of 140 students is selected. There is no doubt in our minds that there are many applicants who, given the opportunity, would be caring and competent physicians.

We suggest that you carefully evaluate your credentials with the assistance of a premedical advisor. In addition, you may wish to refer to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)website:"

That's actually a really nice rejection notice. Most of the other schools just say that they regret to inform you that you won't interview so good luck and screw off. This one actually gave some metrics and said that they know that they're rejecting people who will be great physicians which is actually pretty nice of them.

Edit: Misquote

Dang, I'm sorry. and I agree, they all sting equally 🙁
Do you mind sharing stats?[/QUO

Oh yeah its nice and clean and to the point. Rejections are not terribly, the " your application is on hold" notice is malarkey. Those are by far the worst!

im a non traditional student 8+ years out of school- my stats probably wont give you much solace.

so i submitted my secondary on 8/25 and was rejected on 9/14

do you guys think this means there is a red flag somewhere in my applicaton? or do they just have a quick response time to making decisions on secondaries?
my LizzyM is below 70 so my stats are stellar but i wasnt expecting such a quick decision on my app

Albany was really quick with their decision for me too. I think it's just the school.

Uh.. I submitted on the 28th and haven't heard anything
Are you guys IS or OOS?
(does that even matter lol)

If this is not the correct place, please move this.

How does Albany compare against the other private NY medical schools - Hofstra, Einstein, NYMC, Icahn?

Yeah, I submitted 8/14 and haven't heard anything either. Maybe that is good, given the speedy rejection turnaround time??

I submitted 8/19 and haven't heard anything. Based on the massive slaughters that seem to be happening, I'm quite glad that I haven't heard anything. I think in this instance no news in good news!

I submitted in late July and still haven't heard a thing; not sure what that means, though.

Although I would be grateful and honored to be accepted at any of these schools, if one were to be accepted at all of these schools, a quick look at MSAR and some googling should give you a clear cut answer? Excluding special circumstances and ties.

Also, what do you mean by "compare against"? There are a lot of different ways to evaluate how a medical school stacks up against another, but it's largely personal preference and fit that's most important at the end of the day. Any allopathic medical school will prepare you to be a competent physician.

If you're asking about statistical data such as STEP1 passing or things like match lists, you can find those pretty easily online. As for the "fit" factor, you'll have to either ask current medical students to get a pulse on the current culture or attend interviews (or both 🙂 ).

Good luck and hopefully I helped you start your own search!

Ugh. The hotel list is not updated. Some hotels do not have AMC rates as advertised :/ This is going to be $$$. I was also surprised to find that there is no Uber / Lyft in the area! What are alternative cheap shuttle options?

If you stay at the Hilton Garden Inn next to the medical center they have a shuttle from the Albany Airport but you have to call them to schedule.

The entire AMC rate was booked, and regular rooms were over $200 :/ there is like some sort of conference going on at the same time... I ended up picking Cresthill due to the shuttles to and from the airport and school.

Hey guys! I am interviewing on Thursday and I have my flight scheduled to leave Albany around 5:30pm. Will that be a problem at all? I was under the assumption that the day would be over around 2 or 3 pm? Thanks!!

Oh dear I thought the day ended around 1 PM. My flight is around 330 pm.

You might be right! I think I saw somewhere that it would last 5-6 hours!

I hope so. I was trying to make it back to the west coast that day :/ (Over 10 hours of flying with layovers)

My schedule says I'm in group B. My day starts 8:15 AM and ends around 1 PM. I'll call to double check later.

Don't count on it. You may reschedule your flight.

You freaked me out for little reason. Called admissions and one lady said I should be fine and out no later than 5 minutes over. I am interviewing in the earlier group.

How do you know which group you're in? Hopefully I'm in the early group too! Glad it worked out for you 🙂

Oh wait I figured it out! I'm in group A but my day also starts at 8:15.

Anyone know if in these MMIs they might also ask more traditional questions like "Why do you want to be a doctor" and "Why do you want to go to AMC?" Or should I really just worry about MMI type ethical questions? I'm interviewing here tomorrow morning and it's my first MMI.

Do you think it's necessary to reschedule a 530 flight? I'm not sure how the traffic or security is at Albany.
1). 3:30 PM flight leave no room for error.
2). My experience, the interview ended at around 2 PM. I guess if you present your situation, they can slot you for earlier slot. But again, that could leave a bad impression of poor time management. idk...

No my flight is at 5:30 not 3:30. My schedule says I should be finished by 1pm so fingers crossed it all works out!

Yeah you should be fine. I think other people who are saying they got out at later times were on different schedules. Looking at the schedule for tomorrow I can't imagine things will go much later than 1:00 especially since the interviews are first and it ends with just a Q and A with current students/ financial aid talk.
