2016-2017 Central Michigan University Application Thread

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on SDN. I interviewed at CMU this past Friday, and I have to say that I truly fell in love with this school. I was also surprised to realize that I even got an interview this year. Growing up in a small Michigan town, I do have a strong desire to go into primary care in rural communities. I did have a question regarding how ADCOMS at CMU look at interviews. I felt I really connected to the interviewers during the MMI and during the student interviews and was able to express my passion for rural medicine and desire to attend CMU. From talking to the other interviewees, I felt we all had amazing experiences and I honestly met some very kind hearted individuals. I felt like it must be so difficult to decide who to accept based on personality since I met so many wonderful people. I guess I am wondering how much ADCOMS at CMU focus on personality when choosing to accept students after an interview? Do they use a point system to calculate MMI performances? Do they still factor in MCAT and GPA or is it just how we perform during the interview and our life experiences that play the biggest role in acceptance? I really did fall in love with this school and how everyone works together to teach one another, which is very different from the more competitive cut-throat pre-med culture I experienced in undergrad (one that I despised). I am a non-trad student and have spent the past two years working for a shelter, I loved the mission of this school and truly felt honored to even be considered for an interview.

Interviewed at this school last Friday and loved it. Thanks @Traumahawk for the great tour! I agree with @Trilliums that I would have loved to have some more interaction with current M3s and M4s. My biggest questions are regarding the CCC experience. Can any current M3s or M4s explain what they liked/disliked about that program? Do you have the opportunity to learn and practice new skills or see patients? Or, is it more of a shadowing experience? Any information would be helpful, as it is a bit of a grey area for me! Thanks!! I'm also excited to see the Match list in march... hoping for good things for all current M4s!!

Hey everyone, I was wondering if you guys could list date you interviewed and when (not what, sorry edit) you heard back about your status? 🙂

Have you attended your II here? if yes, how did you feel? if you don't mind sharing!

I remember you got II from U of M, how did that go?

I'm interviewing next Friday! and for U of M, the interview went really well, but I was deferred. I was thrown off by that decision but I also need to move on

Is anyone else who interviewed on 11/18 still waiting for their admissions packet? I don't want to call and bother them but I'm worried mine got lost in the shuffle.

Great job today to everyone who interviewed. It was a great pleasure meeting and talking with so many of you! If you have any follow up questions please feel free to give us a shout out! Have a wonderful weekend!

Also... well done to the interviewee who figured out who I was by the way I talked today. Keen observation skills... apply those to doctorhood and I'm sure you'll be House level amazing (minus the drugs and bad attitude and lack of people skills, of course)!

Are you a current student or are you currently accepted?

Neither. Interviewed at CMED though. I cancelled my msucom interview after getting my first MD acceptance. And if CMED was my only option, I'd still go there. MSUCOM is an excellent school, I'm not trying to make it seem like it's not. But I wouldn't turn down an MD spot for it.

Thank you and best of luck to everyone who interviewed yesterday! Hopefully I was able to answer some of your questions. If there's anything you forgot to ask, please don't hesitate to contact me here or via PM.

Have a great weekend!

Hi! Accepted students, what did your welcome packets contain?

A curriculum/school information booklet. A letter to congratulate. and a letter for financial aid info. I can't remember what else, but I don't remember it having any kind of background check info or acceptance check list stuff.

Once you get your CMU global ID, they'll link you to a matriculation checklist Sharepoint site. (Usually you get the checklist a few weeks after your acceptance stuff shows up.) There will be directions for submitting immunization records, proof of health insurance, background check and so forth. You'll also start receiving a weekly email update (it's usually every Tuesday) from OSA.

Hey everybody. I have been following this thread for a while and I want to thank traumahawk and star.buck among many.
does anyone know when the next time the committee will be meeting and giving out acceptances/notifications on status?

Does CMU do silent rejections pre-I? My status has been "decision pending...until February" since late October. Also, does anyone know until when CMU does their interviews? Thank you.

You'd think it'd create less work for them to just make a post of the dates they send out invites instead of having to constantly deal with all of us asking lol

Looks like there are 3 more interview dates from what has been said here. This friday, and 2 in February. As to the dates they send invites... looks like it's been all over the place.

You're very welcome @michiganroyal2 ! You should hear back within 2 weeks. Again, just a guess, but I'm betting the ADCOM waits til after Friday's interviews to meet.

Also, just a hint... one of the heads of admissions mentioned how enthusiasm falters towards the end of the cycle. Though this is "normal", being enthusiastic may be in your favor at this point in the cycle. (Just don't be weird... or "too" weird)

What's the best way for us to show enthusiasm?

Thanks for answering all of our questions so far!
It is so sad that it's Jan 25 and we are still waiting for the pending II to be converted into II ! 🙁 and there are only 2 dates left while there is no specific date they send the II!

I know, and it's really hard... I wish I had better and more hopeful answers for you. Best advice I have for you at this point is to not give up, if being a doctor is in your blood. Take a deep breath, don't take any rejections or silence as a personal response, and don't let it turn you away from being a doc.

Does CMED take updates? Should I update my grades thru AAMC?

Think it's getting safe to say it's over for us.
Yeah, there may be a slot or two left the second week in February or maybe if someone backs out but I doubt it. I already crossed this school off my list

Hey guys! So I interviewed here recently and I loved the school, the facilities were very nice, the curriculum was modern and the presentations were very informative and I appreciated it very much and super thankful for CMed for giving me this opportunity. I don't want to cause a big uproar here but I wanted to get some people's perspective on the warmness or welcoming of the staff and current students there. I've been fortunate enough to have quite a few other interviews and noticed a huge lack in that welcoming spirit I've experienced at other schools. For instance, the main thing that made me notice this was walking down the halls and passing first and second years and basically getting the "what are you doing here?" look instead of "hey guys! good luck today" which I have honestly experienced at every other school....I was wondering if anyone else felt this way or was it just a fluke?

Ahh, sorry to hear that! I did my undergrad there and did research at cmed, and they've always been such a friendly group. So I want to say it was just a fluke, but I'm biased since I love the school.

Total fluke! I'm an M1 and I as well as most of my classmates regularly wish the interviewees good luck. This was the most warm and welcoming school I interviewed at, part of why I chose it, and part of why I still love it.

We had a little kerfuffle about the auditorium, the tech guys recorded our male-pathology lecture in the auditorium where you guys were this week, instead of the TBL room where we were. You might have just seen a perturbed student who was frustrated at losing that recording for review... and blamed interview day for it.

Come back on second look day... I promise this is an extremely supportive school, full of humans (who at times, sometimes due to lack of food or tech going wonky, get cranky).

I hope the rest of your interview day went well!!

Yeah at my interview I feel like I noticed the opposite haha! I was actually surprised by how welcoming and friendly all of the students were compared to the other places I interviewed!

M1 Q&A panelist chiming in: I feel badly that you got that impression of us. There was a scheduling error that resulted in our class being told to go to the auditorium for a lecture, when it had already been booked for your events. You might have seen some annoyance associated with that, and if so I apologize. We go out of our way to make the MMI days as open and welcoming to candidates as possible.

Again, I'm sorry you caught us on an off day. Do come back for Second Look if you get the time - I think you'll find a very different experience without the technical difficulties!

Best of luck to everyone who interviewed!

So I interviewed a few weeks back and had a great experience. I'm hoping some current medical students can chime in I'm a little confused about the curriculum. So I understand there is team based and problem based learning you get case files weekly and work them out together. But are there no lectures at all? Can someone go thur a quick typical week of what learning and studying looks like at CMed. I seen the weekly schedule during interview day but there was no time listed for lectures? I'm confused where actual learning happens. I just imagine 6 M1s sitting in a room struggling together with little guidance (just my thought, sure its better than I imagine)
