2016-2017 Central Michigan University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
:/ waitlist this early can still mean good things to come tho! What did you think of interview day there?

The interview day went very well. I actually enjoyed my experience and also really appreciated the culture they had there. MMI format is not one you can prepare for very much but it ends up being a great experience.

Got the hold email. For those saying waitlisted, did you get a different email?

Would anyone mind sharing their exact hold or waitlist phrasing/status? Im confused about the difference.

I looked into this a bit. Check out this link to understand CMED's path to admissions: https://www.cmich.edu/colleges/cmed/Education/MDProgram/Admissions/Pages/Path.aspx

I also looked into last year's thread and it seems as though those who have been put on a wait list are the first to be pulled from when it comes to filling their classes. Those who are on hold would have to be moved to the wait list status before being considered. This is what I gathered from last year. Obviously, we all want to be accepted 🙂 but this is what we're working with now.

Where did you find this? Based on last year's thread, I could not find a single person who was placed on hold post-interview.

I apologize. It was within the 2014-2015 thread. There is nothing that I can see that it outright is this way but one can probably presume this to be the case based on some posts. I also could have swore I saw more about this in another thread but cannot find it right now.

Did you get an Email or phone call? What did the email say Lol?
Also congrats!!!

SO (because this would happen to me) I finally gave up around 4:50PM, put my phone away, got a call from a 989 number literally two seconds later, picked up AND NO ONE WAS ON THE LINE.

sick joke right? so i hung up and was like ok this is not funny. and then got a call back 5 min later with the acceptance! To clarify, I got no emails, no update on my portal either.

This is crazy surreal. I'm also a super non-trad applicant with non-stellar numbers but have other areas I've compensated with. Really, really hope you all have acceptances come your way.

I wish I could understand what a hold really means in comparison to the waitlist... sigh🤔

Don't be dismayed by a waitlist. Some of the most amazing people in my class were first waitlisted, some for months, others for a few weeks. They were accepted. Your odds of coming off that list are good, if the acceptance trends continue from previous years.

CMED tries very hard to balance the class, having people from all walks of life and skill sets. They may be wait listing you as a way of saying "hang tight, we need to see another set of applicants so we can form the best group of classmates for you to learn the art of doctoring with!"

That said, wait list sucks. I remember the feeling, and I empathize with you intensely! Hang tight, don't lose hope!

Do you have any insight on how post interview holds work? Is this worse than a waitlist?

I do not know that information specific to CMed, and am sorry I can't help with this. At a few other schools I interviewed at last year the post-interview hold was basically to let you know they didn't forget about you, and will look at your application the next time (or later in some cases) they sit down and look at the interview results/application. I believe they look at applicants in batches, rather than at a constant rate. So, you might just need to wait until the next batch.

i.e. Last year CMed batched my group of interviewees with the batch before me. Looked at all of us, and then let us know the results. So it may have made sense to put that first group in a "hold" position until they could analyze those applicants.

Distill it all down to this: a hold is not a rejection. This means you are still in the running for a seat in next year's class.

Thank you very much! This eased a bit of nerves. They did have 70 apps to go through in less than a month, so it made a bit of sense. Thanks again! I've got my fingers crossed.

Email today for II (my first so far)! Scheduled for the 28th! Let me know if anyone has any mmi advice!

About the MMI... This may be different for other schools, but for CMed, I can't stress enough to be yourself. They invited you because of who you are on your application, be that for your interview. It's not at all about the right answers (except perhaps the ethical ones, then just don't kill the patient). It's about them seeing how you think on your toes, how you empathize with different scenarios, why you want to come to this school, and why you'd make a great doctor. This can't be prepped for, except maybe with more life experience and a little coaching on body language and bedside manner type skills.

So...Smile! Lean forward when you speak. Make meaningful (not creepy eye contact). Don't fidget. Don't fill silence with "ummmmmm". Tell them if you aren't sure, then try to answer it as best you can. Dont look up and past them while you think, look down and to the right or left, then renew eye contact when you speak. Don't cuss (it's happened). Shake their hand when you come in if it feels right. If they give you openings to show your personality, show it! Etc.

You'll be awesome, good luck!!!

Thank you! I can be very awkward with the body language, so I guess its time to brush up 😉

8/5. I honestly have a very low LizzyM but a 4.0 post bacc gpa and some different ECs so I think that's what got me the invite

Congrats on your II! How long did you have the review complete status before you got the II?

Thank you! It had to be about 6 weeks since under review, but for the past 2 weeks I had that status where it said that my application was reviewed but an invite was still pending, so for those of you who got that status: that's where the magic happens!

accepted yesterday at 6:00 pm.
Interviewed here 9/30. IS.
Definitely enjoyed my experience there

I've been at that magic status for a month now but I'm waiting very patiently.

Hi all,
Any estimation for how long between secondary submission and getting an invite or rejection?
Thanks!

Hey guys! So I interviews last year at CMU in February. I was not a very competitive applicant, yet I still got waitlisted. I however did not get offered an acceptance. I do know that I was one of the last 5 people on it in July before they rejected me.

However, currently I am at in the BMS program at WSU, and am doing very well in it. I highly recommend it to all those who do not get in this cycle. It has made me a much better applicant, and I currently have two II at school that I did not last year (CMU was my only II last cycle).

I completed my app a little over a month ago, and have not heard anything back yet. Since I was WL last year, and am a much better applicant this cycle, I do expect to get one eventually. How long after completion did it take for all of you to get IIs?
