2016-2017 Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree. To spike some more anxiety into this thread, maybe we should talk about our responses from interviewers haha.

I got a single line response from my interviewer. Prob means a rejection lmao. ✌️

Is not sending thank you emails frowned upon? I have a poor post-interview acceptance rate so far. I didn't send thank yous because I thought people said they don't make a difference.

It honestly doesn't do anything lol I just wanted to feed the SDN paranoia lmao

If you have more interviews coming up, you should try to improve your interviewing skills. It will help you much more than a thank you note that the interviewer may or may not read.

An MS1 at P&S said the adcom sometimes mentions whether or not the applicant sent a thank-you letter during their meetings, but I got the impression that it was a relatively small factor in the admission decision.

With that said, I think a good rule of thumb is to send a letter if you genuinely want to express appreciation, rather than just in an attempt to get a leg up in the admissions game. I've sent letters to certain people at certain schools, and didn't send letters to other people at other schools; those decisions don't seem to have impacted my success at any schools thus far.

I tried doing it at WashU because I genuinely enjoyed those interviews, haven't gotten a decision from them. Loved my UVA interviews, didn't send thank-you notes, got accepted.. I guess it is a small factor if it is one at all.

What interesting is that throughout my interview day, the deans and student guides kept talking about being waitlisted was not the end of game, the dean even said studying medicine at a not-so-privileged school might not be a bad thing. It made me feel like the chance to get a straight acceptance is quite slim, and we have to fight aggressively to be pulled out of the WL. Did you guys get the same impression from your interview experience?

I got the exact same vibe, my two student guides literally got off the waitlist and stressed how the WL isn't the end game

Hi guys,

Don't read into emails or anything too much at this point. Just a few more weeks until decisions come out, and I promise you'll be a lot less stressed during those weeks if you treat any communication from Columbia until then as a stock response and not try to interpret the relationship between that and decisions.

Generally, good rules of thumb for numbers are ~200 initial acceptances and ~100 acceptances off the waitlist. Don't lose hope if you get waitlisted - a lot of people in my class came off the waitlist, and demonstrated interest during the waiting period can only help. If you are interviewing at Columbia, you are an exceptional candidate for medical school, regardless of where you end up, and you're all going to make fantastic medical students and future doctors.

Wedge said 'Don't read into emails or anything too much at this point'! WHEN SHOULD WE START FREAKING OUT???!?

Thank you, @WedgeDawg! Do you know when they will be releasing decisions this year?

Anyone know if acceptances are likely to come through phone calls again this year?

Since they send out waitlists and rejections the day after acceptance calls I would guess Friday is unlikely. Maybe Thursday the 9th or Monday the 13th.

So what we thinking date wise? Friday the 10th, Monday 13th?
My bet is tomorrow :heckyeah:, they sent out the preparatory emails more than a week earlier this year, and I bet it will be the same Thursday/Friday timing as last year. Plus I had a dream I got in here last night sooo...

I love your enthusiasm, I hope you're right!!

I checked the thread from two years ago and they got the prep emails around the same time we did this year, but they still didn't hear until the second week of February. So idk if there's actually a correlation between the two unfortunately

LOL ur giving all of us heart attacks

I'd be surprised if it's today or this week at all, the last interview was yesterday from what I understood

I know many of you are excited about when the decisions will be called out and posted. I've talked with my school and they will probably make their decisions and reach out at the end of next week. DO NOT be discouraged, many doctors make their calls in the morning, some in the afternoon, some at night. SOME THE NEXT DAY. Don't worry, don't fret. You were all wonderful candidates and interviewees. The waitlist is real and many people get off of it. Good luck!

Most schools have commitee meetings throughout the entire cycle, so they could easily evaluate a few late interviews/applicants this week and have decisions next week. It's not like they evaluate everyone all at once.

Got an email from Columbia telling me I should apply for their one year master's program as it would be good prep for med school. I feel like they're telling me something...

It's probably just a random ad they sent depending on your subscription preferences.

Oh wow didn't get that. That's a weird thing to send imo.
