2016-2017 Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think someone said over the last two years they released on the second Thursday of Feb. Who knows with the weather though

Edit: nvm haha

I'm an MSTP applicant and I got my decision today via email (to check the portal). Waitlisted, sadly.
My email read "The Admissions Committee for Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons has released the admissions decision for the class matriculating in August 2017." So... not sure how/when MD-only decisions are coming out at this point...

No one else finds it hard to believe that a PS student created an account this month with no other post history to twice go to admissions for an update on their release?

I guess it doesn't matter at this point.

No, I don't find it hard to believe, maybe some people who got a lot of help from SDN when applying and know what it's like now want to pay it forward? No real incentive to lie anyway.

In any case, maybe I'm just pessimistic, but I'm not worrying about decisions coming out. Columbia is so competitive and such a relatively small number get accepted that I just don't really think about admissions. The decision will come out whenever they're ready.

i find it hard to believe too, but hey everything is hearsay anyways

Hey guys, current P&S student here! I've noticed in past years that acceptances have come out the second Thursday of February, and last week when all of y'all were speculating they'd start announcing appointments this coming Thursday, I checked with admissions, and thanks to the transparency of the admissions process here at P&S, they told me that your speculations were correct!! However in light of the weather forecast that y'all discussed today on SDN, I was worried that admissions may be running behind on their deliberations, so I went ahead and asked admissions "what's the deal?" Turns out yalls speculations were not without merit cause they said the weather is holding up the clock! You will probably hear early next week, but since I said "probably", don't take my word on it!

Moral of the story is, SDN theories are true and I am ready to verify whenever I am needed! Good luck!

FWIW, Columbia (both main and med campus) has canceled classes today because of the snow so the administrative offices at P&S will most likely be closed.

Honestly that's what I thought. It's not like they're creating the call lists the day of. I bet they've been sitting in the interviewers' inbox for a few days.

I completely agree with this. Not saying the calls are for sure or even likely to go out today, but there's no way they're making the decisions the morning calls go out. I can definitely see how the snow would push back committee meetings, but if that's the case then calls were never going out today anyway.

Also most of our interviewers are doctors so it seems somewhat likely they'll be at work at the hospital today even if the school is closed...

HAH. who am i kidding.

Its 10:01 am. Did anyone get a call yet?!?
Looks like the first call last year was 10:11 am, but it seemed like one interviewer called earlier than the others. Other calls didn't begin until 11:52 am. In 2015 the first call went out at 1:34 pm. If it's today then we're definitely getting close.

LOL I thought I was obsessed until I read this. I truly commend you on this research.

While I don't really mind whenever decisions do end up coming out, I don't understand the idea that snow pushed back the deliberation process because prior to today (the "theorized" release date) NYC hadn't had any legitimate snow in like eons so i don't understand what the P&S student meant when they said that snow pushed everything else back...but either way wishing the best for us all!

I'm at work, taking obsessively-frequent bathroom breaks so I can check my phone/email. I noticed a "missed call" from New York and freaked out ... turns out it was somebody trying to sell me health insurance. *womp womp*

Classes were canceled for today, and many of the administrative offices are either closed or close earlier today. The inter-campus shuttle is not working, the MTA has delays, and basically I suspect many people did not show up to work today. So I dont know how likely it is that you guys will hear back decisions today.

My understanding is that they usually have a meeting in the morning (9-10am) and then calls/emails start going out before the lunch hour and continue throughout the day. This could happen tomorrow or Monday! I know the agony is very real, just hang in there 🙂

A lot of doctors weren't able to make it in today so those who were able to were basically running around filling in doing clinical stuff wherever they could help (even if they were originally schedule to lecture or whatever), so I assume that the admissions office isn't doing anything today.

I LOVE DAVID FOSTER WALLACE TOO. BUDDIIESS

I once referred to his as DFW and someone asked if I meant Dallas Fort Worth
he used to be a professor at my college. i am obsessed with his work

That's awesome. Yea I've never read an author that can so consistently make me audibly crack up as consistently as he can. Have you, and this question goes for all the other DFW fans, read his essay about the cruise he took? If not I suggest you use it to pass the time until decisions come out because you can't help but laugh almost ever paragraph.
