2016-2017 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When admissions confirms your chosen interview date, they will send you information on hotels and the student hosting program. The hotels in Hanover are pricey but most convenient. The others require transportation to Dartmouth for the interview. Helpful to know that uber isn't an option in Hanover!

Extremely helpful. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the email. Thanks so much!

I was offered a few dates, and there's one in particular that works. Any knowledge on whether or not Dartmouth will definitely confirm the date that I chose? Would really love to go ahead and make arrangements, as I'm in a time-sensitive situation. Thanks for any input!

I was confirmed for the 1 date I chose within 30 minutes of sending my email to Whitney Hatch. But, it was yesterday, so not sure if it being the weekend will effect this. I would just send the email asap!!

I was going to say the same thing.

Just got an email saying I should apply based on my MCAT score... Is this sent to a lot of people? I would've never considered applying here

I just got the same email, it didn't say anything about your score. It basically said, hey you took the mcat, maybe you should apply here? Very generic.

Worth adding Geisel this late in the application season?? (I got an email from them on admissions notes- my stats align and I liked what I read on their admissions website)

Oh I saw something about MCAT blah blah blah. So you think they sent this to anyone who took the MCAT? Guess I won't be giving them a donation then haha

I was wondering the same thing!

"The mcat while technically not required, is highly recommended"-->found this on the MSAR

does this mean they are more holistic with reviewing apps? #confused

I received a nifty email from Dartmouth today since I'm on the registry. I'm on the lower end with their stats, URM, decently unique ECs. Worth adding this late or nah? I know they like non-trads which is what made me hesitant to add it at the beginning of the cycle.

TL;DR: pls help

Where are you seeing this in review status at? All I have is the page showing everything is complete.
I'm starting to think our interviews got lost in the mail/interwebs OR they are waiting to invite the both of us together for a whiskey/cigar session over this year's fall LL Bean catalogue.

Im really hoping its the latter and not the former. the fall Patagonia catalogue got published last week so I assume L.L. Bean is on its way, hopefully our II's arrive at the same time lol.

In all actuality though if we do both happen to get IIs I hope we manage to link up at the interview!

Same here. I don't think the email means anything...just a generic "hey you took the MCAT and we're a medical school"
Received a similar email from a different school. Applied, rejected within 72 hours. Joke is on them, I was FAP (no $ for you!).

I think I could hear the adcom from my house, screaming: "Linda, could you please not send these to FAP applicants. We're trying to run a #$%^&* business here!"

Just kidding. I agree with the poster below.

I got that email and I've already applied here. I guess they're trying to extra convince me?

I got the email and I had scheduled my interview a while ago. I have learned for the most part that these emails are basically the equivalent of spam. If you are within a certain MCAT/gpa range, they send the letter/email. Like others have stated, you should apply if you think it's a good fit and you are within their 10%-90% range. You might think you don't have a shot, but you never know what will happen until you try. You should just keep a good balance of being realistic about your chances while knowing that schools look at more than just numbers and there might be something in your application that really stands out to them.

Damn I was complete 8/15 gonna keep refreshing my email

Please share with us something about yourself that is not addressed elsewhere in your application and which could be helpful to the Admissions Committee as we review your file.

how did you guys approach this question? could i answer it with a comment/compliment one of my professors had once told me?

I framed it as a diversity + why Geisel mixture, since I did not explicitly address my minority identity within my AMCAS application.

The compliment direction will work if it brings to light a quality / activity about you that is unique from other applicants and not mentioned in your AMCAS app. if it is going to end up being a not-so-subtle essay where you boast, i'd stray away!

I took it as an opportunity to point to the fact I changed majors & decided on pre-med later in my college career. Made sure to note that as soon as I found my calling in medicine my gpa had a huge upward trend

I used it as a diversity essay talking about nontrad/work experience stuff.

I copy/pasted my standard "diversity" essay, which basically is all things that one could see already from reading my application. I was kind of annoyed by the question - if I thought something was important I would have addressed it in my primary application. Maybe this is why I haven't heard back from them yet... I am filled with regret 😢

I ask used my diversity essay for this one which discusses my background, work and educational experiences as non-traditional student.

Apologies if this has already been answered on this thread....but is Dartmouth receptive to updates to your application?

I'm starting to think our interviews got lost in the mail/interwebs OR they are waiting to invite the both of us together for a whiskey/cigar session over this year's fall LL Bean catalogue.

L.L. Bean Catalog hit my mailbox today meaning that II should be on its way soon right?

What's your LizzyM and complete date? I haven't received my L.L Bean Catalog yet and I've been complete since mid August. Should I email admissions? Worried 🙁
I don't want to freak you guys out, but I received the LL Bean and Vineyard Vines Catalog...so my II has to be coming any time now. However, I have made it abundantly clear that I interview with BROTUS and Hierophant or not at all.

I have my whiskey flask at the ready and my smoking jacket is freshly pressed.:cigar:

Most importantly, I have been working on my Ivy League bravado:

Can someone explain to me this ll bean catalog thing? If you get an interview you will receive a L.L Bean catalog?
Not quite (but close). Think of the LL Bean catalog as a "we're extremely interested in your application" gesture.

If you receive an LL Bean and Vineyard Vines catalog, you may actually be able to skip the interview and enter directly as an MD/PhD student, depending on your dialogue during the mandatory whiskey and cigar chat over this season's fall styles (smoking jacket or proper robes required).

Sign me up for the whiskey and cigar chat!

Also I got no VV but I did get the patagonia catalog, I think if the woolrich catalog comes it means you get to skip med school entirely
