2016-2017 New York Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does the admission office close at 12 pm everyday? I called them everyday to ask about my app status but impossible...feel like the office always closes 🙁:eyebrow::wtf:

The one time I needed to contact them, it took daily calls for about a week to actually speak with a person in the office.

Is it too late to apply here? I did the secondary a while back but flaked cause of the CASPER part. I didnt complete that. They keep sending me a reminder email and I would love to go there. Should I just save my $120 fee since its already October?

Dude.. Please tell me how do you have so many II's with that LizzyM

Unique non traditional applicant, URM AA, overkill on every other section of app, extensive post bacc, applied to right schools, killed secondaries and explained my gpa. Yea, I think thats what did the trick.

ur killin it dude(tte)! goes to show there is much more to showing that ur a qualified and capable candidate than having like a 520 MCAT 😉

Wishing you the best!

Thanks. Been a long and bumpy road to say the least. Ive been shot down on sdn so many times but used it as motivation. Cant wait til this cycle is over to post a great story in the underdog thread. 🙂

I have to say...you are the rudest and most arrogant member I have seen on these threads (I am a bit of a lurker).

If someone receives an ii with a lizzy lower than yours, you say something akin to "no offense...but are you urm?". As if all urm's have lower lizzy scores (by the way, I have seen ZERO urm's at 4 of my interviews thus far)...stop it already!

I am an ORM with an mcat 13 points lower than yours and I have received multiple interviews. There is much more to being a doctor than a single score. You have to not only be personable, but you have to have great character (shown via activities, ps, lor, and interview). I know people with low-end mcat scores who now practice in some of the best hospitals in the country.

Your possible problems:

-I bet that your "charming" character also shined on your application like it does on sdn.
-One of your letter writers finds you detestable.
-Your application is lacking in all other areas due to riding high on your mcat score.

My advice: grow up and find some maturity somewhere, somehow. If this is how you act/think in real life, you are not going anywhere, even if you get an ii.

That's kind of rude.

i love that everyone showed their support to zurc2014. and people say SDN is filled with a*******. not quite. keep on trucking brother
I wasn't even being rude
I just wanted to know the secret to his power
Could I have phrased it better? yeah, but the question I asked undoubtedly gives other people valuable info about what kinds of applicants this school is looking for
I am the villain so others can be the hero

I've lurked in a few other threads too....you're right. I wish people understood that people(applicants) are valued beyond numbers and numbers are just one single factor in the entire equation. I've been to a few interviews and I've met some of the most compassionate and amazing people one could ever imagine-- not once did it feel like a big stats game. I'm not a superstar-stat applicant but schools have given me the chance and I'm eternally grateful.

Side note: SDN has its moments

I have a feeling you just wrote something completely inappropriate or offensive on your primary app and didn't even realize it, which may be your problem. Because I don't understand how somebody doesn't realize how that statement is rude.

That's kind of rude.
I didn't take it that way one bit. Not at all. I think it's a fair question lol. I haven't seen anyone with a LizzyM in the 50s so I'm shocked to even receive one II. I damn near cried out of joy for my first DO II knowing how lucky I am for that. I wake up everyday still in shock so I think that response is normal and warranted. 🙂

I know I know, I'm literally Hitler
Sorry to everyone I offended

Lmao... Are u sorry tho?

Seriously tho, it's nice to see that everyone is expressing similar thoughts and are willing to stand up against this joker. In the beginning I thought he was just some neurotic pre-med who's smart enough to get good grades, but completely lack social skills.

But u would think a person who scores a 520, or so he claims... Would be able to quickly grasp the concept when people tell him "hey what ur doing is making u look like a POS." Many of our sdn peers have crapped on this person and he still refuses to stop. At this point, I'm pretty sure he's just a dumb*ss troll who's looking for attention.

IMHO, I guess it's time to move on because he is a lost soul who cannot be saved. Some people are just beyond help and if he is just an internet troll...

Nah I got you lol I ask myself everyday " how, wtf?" I got a few PMs asking how with my LizzyM and I welcome the questions so I can help others in the same boat. Better than getting told to do podiatry or something by everyone else on sdn. Again, I thought it was a fair question 🙂

I dont want to get into the dog-pile but honestly @baratheonfire you have been conducting yourself on site (not just this post) like a complete a*s. I get the stress around applications that brings out the worst in everyone but its just extreme with you. Also the URM comment on its own is not anything bad but when it comes from you a person that consistently conduct themselves in a bad way people will take the worst of it.

Thanks for understanding man. I can see that I was blunt I never meant to disparage you in any way. And even if I was intentionally out to get you, why should you care lol? You have tons of II's and I have none lol. You're gonna get in man, congrats

Not sure how my committee wouldn't catch that

Your troll sign is misplaced m8. Even if my comment was rude, the dozens of comments that came after mine were completely vicious. You guys are just making yourselves feel better because you've found someone to attack. Because I "deserve" it.
But my "rudeness" doesn't justify yours. At best, you're no better than me. But really, you're worse. I never said anything personal about this guy. I just asked a genuine question, to which I honestly wanted to know the answer.
But you guys call me a liar, an idiot, autistic, mentally ill, immature, neurotic, a joker, I've heard it all. These are things I have never said to someone or would ever say to anyone.
Have fun. Go ahead, it looks like you enjoy it. But question if you've earned your high horse.

Let's all just chill out for a second guys. Sure, he's no bananafish but it doesn't seems like he's doing it on purpose. Sometimes applying to medical school means so much to someone that the pressure really gets to him/her. I personally have had my share of difficulties in handling my emotions with regards to this process and I sympathize with those who are the same. Depending on the individual's situation, they may be facing a lot of negativity in their lives, and I think we should try to inject as much positivity into them as possible. Not because we have to or we should, but because it is the good thing to do.

You're right, and if someone called you any of the bolded terms on SDN, you should report the comment.

Thanks. I have a weirdly blunt/sarcastic way of talking which a lot of people might interpret as true hostility. IRL I control this a lot but in the communities that I hang out on the internet people are a lot more open to speaking this way.

I don't believe in censoring them. I just fight their speech with my free speech.

You ever play runescape?

how do you setup or get thread notifications?

You have to subscribe to the thread(s). Assuming you have an iPhone, you do Settings > Notifications > SDN > Allow Notifications. Hope this helps!

Hi everyone, I'm trying to understand what the "on-hold" status means at NYMC. I've scrolled through the thread, and haven't seen any rejections. Is "on-hold" at NYMC more or less a rejection for most applicants with this status?

I'm not on hold at this school, but at 2 schools I was put on hold at, I later got II! So I don't believe they mean rejection.

Definitely not...plenty of people come off hold! Only a rejection is a rejection. Some get put on hold soon after they submit, others (like myself) sit in limbo just complete for months on end. Don't obsess, it's a long cycle and things will sort out as time goes on.

How long did you have the "under review" status before being invited for an interview? I've been complete since late July and under review for about 4 weeks now...

Do you mean this status?
  • Your secondary application was completed by the Office of Admissions and is currently under review by the Committee on Admissions.
I've had it since late August and no news. CASPER has been in since then too.

"under review" from August to March...too long...so did u get II after that...just curious....

Hey guys,

So I submitted my secondary in mid July, and have had my letters and CASPer score in for a while, but my app still isn't complete. My letters also aren't showing up on the portal, because it says that my secondary app isn't processed yet. Does NYMC usually take this long processing secondaries/marking apps as complete?

alot of us are in a similar limbo.

Any interviewees on here in Valhalla for the next 2 days 10/10 and 10/11?

Yes, they did invite me for an interview. I am a current M1 here, so you could say it went well despite the ludicrously long wait.

Congrats! Did you get any II's before thanksgiving or was NYMC your first? Also, what were your stats lol

@baratheonfire Yes, I had another interview at a state school before thanksgiving. I was a reapplicant, applied to 5-7 schools the second time, and my numbers were 3.4/3.4/514.

Edit: I was about to say I'm proud of you for not asking if I'm URM, but you actually asked me both of these questions in May in the "oh no, I don't have a single interview" thread when I posted my acceptance.
