2016-2017 SUNY - Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
IIRC they meet on Wednesdays?
That's what I remember from a couple meetings.

It seems that the clearing of the portal is hit or miss. Sometimes it clears on Friday, others on Monday. Last week was Tuesday.

..... Not that I'm keeping track or anything.

Yeah portal clearing is haphazard but whenever it clears I think the next Wednesday your file is reviewed. All speculation of course.

Good luck though!

Interviewing on 12/7, also for the rural medicine scholars program. Definitely sounds appealing and personally rewarding as I went to undergrad upstate and currently live in the region. Does anyone know how this may affect my candidacy or admissions timeline? Is it a program that one is accepted to separately from the MD program?

1) Congratulations!!!
2) Being an RMSP applicant should not have that much of an impact on your application. While the RMSP does interview applicants, it is very much informational rather than inquisitive. The student population in the RMSP is rather dynamic as some students enter when they are first accepted, throughout the pre-clinical years, or even during clerkships.
3) This should not affect your admissions timeline. You will typically have the abovementioned RMSP interview on the same day as your MD interview.
4) Assuming that the RMSP interview/interaction goes well, you will be accepted once you are accepted into the MD program.

Very cool and thank you very much. I would love to go to Upstate as I have come to know the school very well from working in research at another nearby hospital. Might you have any information regarding interview:acceptance ratios and chances given this interview date? I have been accepted to two DO schools that use MMI so I feel comfortable with the interview style.

I do not know the acceptance rate(s) for particular interview dates. However, during my interview, they stated that approximately 700 applicants are interviewed and 300-350 are accepted. Give or take.

I also interviewed on 9/28, haven't heard back or had my portal clear. It's getting close to 6 weeks now which is getting pretty nerve-wracking :S

Not to worry anyone, but my friend who also interviewed on the 28th got accepted yesterday; hopefully we're soon! Also my portal has not cleared yet.

Too late :nailbiting:

haha, I'll begin to worry when I see a lot of the 9/28ers getting "cleared"/decisions and mine remains untouched.

Hey folks congrats to all who've been accepted and best wishes to those who are waiting to hear back. I'm a current MS1 at Upstate. Let me know if any of you have questions and I will do my best to respond.

I know this is a stressful time for you all. Hang in there; something good will happen to everyone.

Thank you for the input in this thread.

Assuming next week goes well, I'll have a few questions for you.

Hope your first year is going well!

Who are you

I logged into the portal and it says "Congratulations on being selected for an interview" but I didn't receive an email about the II. Should I just go ahead and select a date on the portal? Is it customary not to get an emailed II for upstate?
Correct. From what I have seen, it is not uncommon.

I personally received an email, but many did not.

Edit: Congratulations!!

@Monophasic any chance there's a Facebook group for the class of 2021 that you know of?

No I do not believe there is currently an Upstate COM class of 2021 facebook group yet.

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted! If you have any questions please feel free to ask here or PM me.

Yes this is common, sometimes the emails from Upstate lag behind several days. In fact, I don't think I ever actually received an acceptance email -- I just saw the acceptance on the portal.

Got a II over 2 weeks now and never got a email

Those who interviewed at the 10:15 slot- what time did you finish? Would a 3:20 departure flight be cutting it too close? The portal says to expect to be on campus until around 3, however, another school I interviewed at said we'd finish at 5 and I got out at 2.
From my experience, they were pretty on point with their predicted time. The MMI is the last thing you do and everyone finishes at once.
