2016-2017 SUNY - Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Those who interviewed at the 10:15 slot- what time did you finish? Would a 3:20 departure flight be cutting it too close? The portal says to expect to be on campus until around 3, however, another school I interviewed at said we'd finish at 5 and I got out at 2.

You will definitely not make a 3:20 flight in the 10:15am slot. You will get out right at 3pm and it will take you 15 minutes to get to the airport. You need to have time to at least get to SYR an hour early. Most times the security line is fine but sometimes it can be kinda long.

Thank you for chiming in. I live within driving distance so I couldn't really provide input for flights.

The late day ends at 3 very consistently. Do not book a flight for 3:20.

are interview dates that you see specific to you or are they the overall interview dates? i.e. do some people see different days available than you do when scheduling an interview?

I don't think so. I think it's very contingent on when you check. Say, for instance, you check and the earliest date is in February. Then the next applicant happens to go on after you, but also after someone canceled their interview for November. It will show for them, but not you (since you already chose your interview).

that makes sense. thank you!

umm, so my portal changed to say I was accepted (!!!) and I payed the deposit, but now it's blank, and I never got an email... is that what's supposed to happen? am I being neurotic?

When I paid my deposit, the portal said "Thank you for your deposit" along with a receipt from the bursars office via email. Then I got an email from them acknowledging my payment the next day and the message disappeared.

Ok, cool, that's what happened to me. Did you get an email or letter with your acceptance or just the portal update?

Don't sweat it, the portal is kind of dated. If it said you were accepted than you were in fact accepted. You'll probably get the acceptance packet in the mail in a few days. Congratulations!

Accepted earlier this week!

For those needing a smile, check out this amazing video I just stumbled upon:

This is kind of a thing now. Every year the MS4 class puts one of these together, I think for the last three years now.

@Monophasic

For the equipment list, what is really needed? Obviously a stethoscope and oto-opthalmoscope (since it states it's required for incoming students). How about the others?

So since the beginning of October interview groups seemed to have recently gotten their acceptances, as a 10/17 interviewer I should expect to hear back in another 1-2 weeks probably? I hate this period after having a bunch of IIs, just more waiting! Congrats to those accepted!

Sounds about right... Is it psycho that I checked the University HR schedule to see if employees worked on Columbus Day to figure out if there were interviews that day? Lack of interviews that day would ostensibly speed up your (and my) decision as well.

haha yeah that's a little intense! It's best to just try not thinking about it too much. I'm sure there are other variables besides Columbus Day that can have a much greater impact on how long it takes for them to get to us.

Yep I'm normally really chill too... Must be time for some yoga!

For the first year all you'll need is a stethoscope. The ophthalmoscopes are on the walls in the exam rooms.

Awesome. Thank you very much. That's what I figured. I'll be damned if I need a BP cuff. Haha

This is all unofficial of course. Officially you absolutely need all of the things on the list.

And although little to no time is spent on it, I personally think being able to take a reliable BP is a useful tool... you never know.

I've heard prices are often higher in the bookstore.

I agree that taking manual blood pressures is useful skill. All too common are the automatic NIBPs now (which isn't a bad thing) in hospitals.

Thank you for your input!

anyone (who already was accepted) not get their packet yet?

Congrats on all the acceptances!

I was just wondering for people interviewing in late January ... will those people be interviewing for waitlist spots or do they still offer plenty of acceptances then as well?

An answer for panda's question would be great as I am interviewing in early December.

I was accepted a few weeks after interviewing in January last cycle. Browse this thread for more info.

Any theories on why a person who interviewed the same day as me already had their portal clear and then an acceptance this past week while my portal is still unchanged? Is the order they review apps for a particular interview day just up to random chance? Since my portal hasn't even changed I can assume they just haven't gotten to me yet correct?

Same thing happened to me. Someone who interviewed on the same day as me was accepted a couple weeks before I was. Not sure why they don't review in exact order but it's nothing to worry about.

The exact response I was hoping to hear to reassure me. Thank you, I can stop hyperventilating for now.🙂
