There is no indication on the portal that your application is on hold. The email you receive is the only communication of hold status.

I managed to snag an October 3 date somehow, but I didn't see anything else in October. I didn't check later dates bc I was afraid the early one would disappear before I confirmed.

I think we're supposed to email the students--that's how the other school I interviewed at did it. It's probably easier for the admissions staff if they don't have to coordinate hosting.

it almost sounds as if they made space due to your high stats lol. Others have said theres a waitlist to get an earlier interview. ive kind of lost hope at snagging a fall interview since i was complete end of august

Can also say I am surprised that it was free because I am on a waitlist for an earlier interview. For those on the waitlist like me now I am thinking they might only offer earlier interviews on the "last minute" basis, not on a rolling and "last minute" basis
 
So I submitted my Primary a week ago and just got this email

""Thank you for applying to SUNY Upstate Medical University. Your application has been received!"""

It took almost a week for them to get my application ?? Or is something wrong?? My Letter of recommendation isnt shown as received as well
 
are people not seeing any free interview dates? that's happening to me and now i'm wondering whether my ii was a glitch...

First free interview dates I saw were in January 2017.
 
does it matter what session one signs up for - there's nothing inherently different about the 8:45am one vs the 10:15am one, right?

edit: i know i'm being overly analytical, sorry! i signed up for an interview date, so this can be ignored!!

Yeah, I think the only difference is that you can get up later for the 10:15 slot. The schedule also might be different in terms of when the MMI portion is during the day relative to the tour and such

If I understand correctly, the 8:45 start group will do their MMI first thing once they get there, and the 10:15 group will do their MMI at the end of the day, after lunch and the tour of campus.

Also, congrats to everyone who has received an II!

I really wanted to get into a SUNY.

lol at scoring in the top 1% on mcat and being put on hold. you were either way out of their standard deviation for matriculated students or had holes in your extra curriculars. i was completed 8/26 i think so i guess i should hear back soon

Anecdotally, I was placed on hold in September, than interviewed in January and was accepted a few weeks later. Being put on pre-interview hold is certainly not a "death sentence" as you say. That being said, I do not know of many from the cohort who had a similar admissions experience.

Just clear it from you mind; put it on the back burner. You'll be pleasantly surprised when you get an II.

A monster MCAT score will get eyes on your application, but they are really looking for well-rounded, down to earth people who will do well in the Upstate community. This also means that those of you with MCAT scores not in the 99th percentile will certainly be considered and many will be accepted.

Any OOS people get II's? I completed the secondary but haven't submitted the fee yet because I'm OOS and trying to decide whether it's worth it...

I don't think I had holes in my EC's at all. The only weakness (a pretty big one) is my 3.47 GPA. SUNY Downstate asked for my fall term grades so I'm kind of on hold there also?
I'm not sure how many people they send that request to though.

It was in response to a comment saying that I was ignored despite my MCAT score. By responding to that and saying they only want well-rounded, down to earth people rather than high MCAT scorers, I am by extension arrogant and narrow-minded.

It just hurts m8.

Also- I keep hearing about an un-official cutoff for MCAT scores , the admissions wont review below a certain score, but would extend secondaries to everyone. I don't get that...might be a rumor, but a few users mentions it in this years thread and last years thread. :/

A hold isn't necessarily a death sentence. Most schools review and re-review applicants many times throughout the cycle because only a very selective group can receive IIs right off the bat. It's just that some schools keep you posted and some don't so you have the impression that your file hasn't been reviewed and an II can come any minute.

Do some research on previous cycles as for some schools almost no one gets off for an II. I received an II from another school after being on hold in February lol... However, things change from year to year even in the same school. Some years many people get IIs from hold list and sometimes not many do. Just relax because it's not over until you get a rejection. It could also be that the poster was responding to another who had expressed confusion over your application being placed on hold (despite the MCAT). Rather than a dig at you, it could be a reassuring gesture to another applicant who likely doesn't have a 520...

I'm not sure. The MCAT plays a role in your review, but I expect it's similarly evaluated at other schools. If you have a GPA above the mean, you are probably given a higher 'score' for that part of your application, whereas if you have a higher MCAT you'd have a favorable bump for that category. If you have a 3.95 GPA but 503 MCAT, the deficit from one area is unlikely to be made up by others... but... it's near-impossible to know the inner workings! Good luck!

My post was not a dig at you. I know nothing of your application or circumstances. I was explaining that the school looks at more than academic statistics during their review.

Many schools have an MCAT score that is essentially a cutoff for consideration of your application. I do not know that Upstate has as actual hard cutoff, but I know other schools certainly do and tell you outright. In terms of who gets a secondary application, realistically every single applicant to every single school gets a secondary, for the exception of some schools that still screen primary applicants before sending out a secondary. Most schools do not screen primary applications today, and in fact, you can receive a secondary from a school before you're even verified, as AAMC tells the school that you've selected them on your application.

Thank you! I have similar stats to your's (lol yeah I know it's weird that I can remember your stats). I was complete in early Aug, and I was never on hold, but I know someone here on sdn who was on hold last year, got an II later and got outright accepted. So a hold at upstate is not a death sentence like it is at a lot of other schools.
 
Just got an II here - the only available dates seem to be in January... just wanted to confirm that other recent invites are seeing the same thing?
 
Just got an II here as well! (Via email, so for those worrying about the portal thing like I was, I hope this is somewhat reassuring) The earliest dates available are January.

Correct, interview slows are filled out to January.

I have an interview scheduled for October 17th here and I'm just wondering if anyone has an idea of Upstate's % accepted post Interview? Is it similar to Stony Brook's 50%?

i was complete late august and now im waiting to try again lol. hopefully we get in this time
