2016-2017 SUNY - Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
they said something like 350-420 out of the 750 interviewees are accepted so around 40-50%?

edit: this was my 2nd interview and first (and only) MMI. mmi was so fun! the first room sucked (and I started with a doozy of a scenario so lol) but after that it was more relaxing. I felt like the interviewees I met at upstate were all so chill and encouraging. like thumbs up, "almost done guys!" whispers in the hallway during the interview. and all the students who passed by stopped to chat and wished us luck too!

Congratulations on the II and successful day!

How was your overall day? Any helpful information?

Interviewing tomorrow and I'm having some expected anxiety, especially since this is my top choice for many reasons.

I'm not @robotfinches, but since you'll be on campus tomorrow allow me to answer these questions:

The day is really low-key and not at all stressful. If you have an early start at 8ish then I believe you'll start the day with the MMI. If you start around 1030 then you'll have your MMI at the end of the day. Like most MMIs, the people you'll interact with will be anyone from practicing physicians to professors to current medical students to non-clinical community members. The best advice for the MMI is to gather your thoughts during the small prep time, and deliver a cohesive thought that you'll be able to discuss with the person. It's really that simple -- just be yourself and have a fluid conversation. Don't worry about make sure you spend the entire 8 minutes or whatever speaking, just have a discussion on the topic presented.

As for helpful information? Hmm. There's a parking garage across the street from Weiskotten Hall (where the interview is) that's not too expensive so you don't have to worry about walking distance to the interview. Also, the lunch provided is pretty tasty. Oh, and I would say the standard advice applies: Know info about the school, a little about the school's history, know the school's mission and purpose, and about the community served. Really can't go wrong with those things.

Make sure while you're interviewing that you get a feel for the school. Ask the students questions, especially when they are giving the tour. Much like interview day, Upstate is pretty low-key, and so far it's been a pretty enjoyable experience.

Good luck with your interview tomorrow, I am sure you will do well. Let me know how it goes either way.

Interviewed here recently and second the two posts above mine. The best advice I can add is to just be yourself. It was an enjoyable, stress-free interview. I even made friends with some of the other applicants. Use the interview day to your advantage in figuring out whether it's a school you can see yourself at.

Put on hold via email last night, doesn't appear to show that in the portal if anyone was curious. OOS LM 70-71 complete 8/5.

This is correct, the portal does not show that you are on hold. Although it will show if you have received an II, I wouldn't check the portal until January. I received my II by email, but who knows if it had been sitting there for a while in the portal and I hadn't looked.

Congratulations on the II and successful day!

Interview was very chill as others have said. It was my first MMI and I was a bit nervous (and thus didn't do as well as I could have), but felt like all the stations were very doable and the interviewers and students were all very friendly! Don't know if I will get in based on my performance at the interview, but it seems like a great school to be at.

Edit: didn't realize you had your interview already but hope it went well!

I am wondering if anyone knows whether the school sent out rejection letters yet? or are the hold letters their way of rejecting you?

I'm sure you can't give specifics, but can anyone give me an idea of the best way to prepare for the interview? I had one MMI already where it was all pretty much classic "MMI-type" questions but I've also heard some schools throw in more "traditional" questions into their MMIs. Would you say there were some "traditional" questions about the school or your application thrown in or was it all just classic ethics MMI type stuff.

We had to sign a NDA so no one will be able to answer this for you - sorry.

Disclosing what was asked at the interview would reduce the validity of the MMI itself.

Oh yeah no I was not trying to get anyone to break their NDAs, I was just seeing if I could get some more general info about how best to prepare that would be within acceptable NDA standards. But if no one can even give a general idea that's still fine. I'll just be prepared for anything!

I remember taking a glance at an MMI school's thread two years ago. The NDA is a legally binding document that you sign correct? Not sure if they were trying to scare people, but some Deans told interviewees that they do look on SDN to see if questions are leaked and will track you down lol. Anyone have anecdotes about this topic?

Wonder how many people with 3.47 GPA's and an MCAT of 520 (from memory, guessing that's about right) are applying to Upstate and recommending someone circumvent their NDA...
Smh. I didn't even recommend that. I never even asked him about the MMI, that was someone else. I'm on hold here.

I think yes

Being put on hold is not the same as being rejected.

Hi all,

Interviewing here in December. Life-long IS, current living locally. Is this quite late in the cycle to be interviewing in terms of spots open and relative chance for acceptance?

Did you apply late? Or were you somewhat early?

Hey y'all. Complete late August, got a II through the portal (no email). Soonest interview date was February. Very excited!!!!!

Applied on time I would say. Got MCAT back on 6/21, then submitted. Complete email from Upstate on 8/5, offer of interview 9/12

I agree that it's on time.

The only reason I asked was for generic information. I won't even mention it since it seems you're on your A game.

Upstate has 4 categories post-interview if you didn't know. Accept, high priority wait list, wait list, and reject. The high priority wait list is very dynamic and you may very well be accepted from that (as many do).

Wait list isn't so great. The last time someone was pulled from the wait list was 7 years ago, and it was only two students.

That being said, I don't think December is a terrible time to interview. If I remember/heard correctly, they do not start grabbing people from high priority wait list until April (presumably after AAMC's day).

Can any current or former Upstate student comment about the places to live in Syracuse? I understand that Upstate has its own apartment building (Geneva Towers) but reading some of the reviews from past years, Geneva doesn't seem to be a good place to live (thin walls/floors, sound carries through ventilation, cannot set heating temp for your own unit, etc.). The rent is quite a bit more than the other off-campus options. Anyone living at Jefferson or Madison apartments (or any other place where Upstate students live) mind give a review/opinion about your place? Also, where would you recommend a first year to live in that is nearby the school and other students?

Thanks

Are there any Upstate students (especially M3s or M4s) with advice about which clinical campus to chose? I like the idea of having a more hands-on experience at Binghamton, but I'm also interested in specializing and want the experience of being in a more diverse city with larger hospitals. Do people usually stay at their campus for both clinical years?

Obviously as an MS1 I can't speak to the first part of your question, but most people do their MS3 year in Binghamton, and come back to Syracuse for MS4. Makes sense, since you'll be doing electives and aways anyway.

Did anyone else interview early September? We are supposed to find out next Monday (the 17th) if we were accepted, correct? Is that sent through email or regular mail?

I'm assuming we find out by email. Good luck!

Hi everyone, I got an email saying I was on hold. Would it be beneficial or helpful to let them know of updates? I recently started an important research position and another leadership activity that I didn't mention on my primary/secondary. Thanks 🙂

did you just receive the e-mail now?

I would check the portal. I didn't receive an acceptance email for a while IIRC. In fact, I got the background check release email before the portal showed the acceptance. I know it's stressful for sure, but I would just pop on the portal and check around noon, and if nothing than maybe once more around 5pm.

That sounds stressful yikes. Glad we have you here to give us prior warning though, thank you!!!

For anybody that has already interviewed and submitted campus preference, are you still able to see your interview information on the portal? The whole section is completely gone for me, portal looks like it did before my interview invite. Yes, I'm being paranoid lol

Interviewed early September, and all of that stuff has been gone for me since I submitted campus preference.
