2016-2017 Texas A&M Health Science Center Application Thread

yes, on that note...go write it up!

Off topic, but how do you like living in the RGV? I read your bio about how you moved there, so what's it like being a non native valleyer (made up word!)? Thanks!!

  1. Check here if you want to be considered disadvantaged and explain in question #23.

23.Describe any circumstances indicative of some hardship, such as, but not limited to, financial difficulties, personal or family illness, a medical condition, a death in the immediate family or educational disadvantage. (Do not leave blank. If not applicable, please so indicate. The character limit on this essay is 3500).

I already addressed the disadvantage in the TMDSAS Optional Challenge essay. My committee letter will also talk about it: single parent, lowest income, poverty, working-class background etc.

So I really don't want to hash out the same yet again here. Ok to skip it?

Others, past applicants, @wysdoc

I think you have mentioned asking for fee waivers, meaning economically disadvantaged? The way I read it, if you checked the box asking to be considered disadvantaged, you need to write something there. You could make it a brief summary, as you have already addressed it in other parts of the application. But do write a few sentences, I wouldn't recommend writing "see essay B above".

Yes but some schools (many Texas school) don't give fee waiver, even if you are qualified through AMCAS

Congrats! When were you completed if you don't mind me asking.

Haha yeah so here's some info that may help you guys

Got 2 emails this morning at 11:42 AM, one for RSVP and one saying I'm interviewing at Temple. Quick question to you guys-- does the location matter exactly? Is it decided based on my stats or something? I know they've got multiple sites. II email was "We are happy to invite you to interview for our medical school class of 2021 at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine."

I submitted TMDSAS 7/11/16, was verified 8/1/16, secondary submitted 8/22/16. Email today 9/20/16

Stats: GPA 3.8+, MCAT 511. In state applicant, slight nontrad (graduated in May)

I interviewed at Temple. Thy told us there was no difference, it's just whoever got to your application first. There is members of the admissions committee at both so whichever gets to your application first.

Does A&M prematch heavy? Or should I expect to hear back from them in February?

Can anyone comment on their experience at the night-before social? I got a late-notice call to interview in Temple on Thursday, and I'm very excited, but I won't be able to get off work the night before :/

Phone call? Or email? I didn't think this school calls so maybe it's just a figure of speech haha. Congrats on the interview!

Don't worry, you're not missing anything. Students will ask you about what you do, and answer whatever questions you may have about them or medical school or interviewing or whatever. It almost always comes down to random small talk and "oh how many interviews have you had??": trust me, I've been one of the students attending. It's very casual, and just to help you relax the night before.

Phone call, but only because they had someone drop and wanted to offer me the spot short-notice. They sent me an email right after I said I was available. Thank you! This will be my first interview so I'm a little nervous haha

Alright, I feel better then. It looks like there will be some time with current students during the II day itself too, so that's good. Thanks 🙂

So if anyone is worried about lack of IIs, when I interviewed at A&M, several of the medical students only had 2 IIs and they were both TCOM and A&M. Also, 2 people interviewed in January last year, and the majority of current students had only 3 interviews total. Also really surprising that one student interviewed only at A&M and UTSW, since UTSW has such a high gpa/mcat, you'd think he would have interviewed everywhere. Overall, the way they do interviews and choose who goes where is confusing.

That makes me feel more comfortable. Thanks!

Anyone get the

Error message? I'm attempting to submit my secondary but it won't let me 🙂

Also it's bizarre, transmitted primary at 07/06 but no confirmation email.

I feel silly, but did A&M send people II? I just logged on to the secondary application site out of curiosity for the previous post and I saw I had a II since two weeks ago. I'm excited, but does anyone know if other schools in TX don't send out emails?

A&M definitely sends out emails for the interview invites....were you able to rsvp in time for the interview if it's been there for 2 weeks? did you check to see if the email from a&m went to spam?

I need to check that folder. I'm in luck because the interview date still hasn't happened!

Still waiting. Come on A&M show me love. "Under Review" so there is still hope.. Completed 8/1
TCOM knows what's up. They gave me an II.

Oh ok. I thought there was a certain time frame within which you had to respond to the invite upon receiving it. Atleast I'm pretty sure that's how it was for me...

I think there was a limit! I was lucky. II was on Sep 13, and my interview was for almost a month after... good thing I checked today!

TBH not getting an email from a school is scary. I wouldn't think to check the portal very often. And for schools that don't let you have a portal (UTH ahem) what if the emails aren't getting to us...

You should probably call them and figure out why you didn't get an email so in the future you don't miss emails from them again....

Yeah, I did that this morning before work. They had a different email from when I applied to their MPH program. Problem solved! Thanks guys!!
