2016-2017 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It will be half days almost every day after Thanksgiving and until December 2017 (for my class).
From August until Thanksgiving we've had dissections and such in the afternoons (not every day though).
One nice thing to note too is every lecture is recorded. And our grading is a true P/F until clerkships begin. We do see our grades for personal reference, but once they are posted on the transcript only the P remains, no % or rank.
I was told that we will still be ranked (at least PDs at UTSW can see our ranking). I was told this by a PD here.

There should be no rank until clerkships. They probably can see ranks for 4th years since they weren't P/F?
What's a PD?

PD is program directors for residencies, like Program Director of Pediatrics, PD of Surgery, etc. They're usually involved in oversight of the residency program

Nah, they definitely see our rank. We talked about this pretty in-depth over lunch at Clements.
I was under the impression that "real" P/Fs don't actually exist in medical school -- everyone's internally ranked, which determines what sorts of honors you might get in your Dean's Letter for residencies. Same thing applies to Baylor's P/F system as well. Am I wrong?

Well I was hoping it wouldn't get to this point, but if I haven't heard about an interview yet am I pretty much out of luck? I'm OOS with a 510 and a 4.0, which may not be the most competitive so I'm just curious. Don't be afraid to be brutally honest!

Wutz?

But no, you are not out of luck. Give it time, you have a good shot if the interview went well. You do not need a 520 to get in.

I will inquire about this because they have told us multiple times that the rank and honors on Dean's letters will never include pre-clerkship years.
They even changed the AOA criteria to work around the fact that there are no grades for the first year and a half.
I've been taking advantage of P/F for some classes...

Let us know what you find out please.

Unfortunately I haven't had an interview yet. My question was if I was SOL for an interview if it is this late.

I received acceptance letter today, but I do not see any merit or scholarship in the letter. Did anyone receive merit/scholarship in the acceptance letter?

Received the letter as well. No scholarship or money mentioned in it though. I'm assuming this means I didn't get any?

Congrats!!! Do you guys know if these are need based or merit based? Also, is there still anyone that hasn't gotten their letter yet?
This is all merit based. I don't think they have even gotten my FAFSA yet (I completed it after this letter was in the mail).

Hi yall 🙂 Quick question- are the interviews totally blind? No personal statement, secondary stuff etc.? And it's one student interview + one faculty interview, yeah?

(No idea why I can't find this anywhere, I think my pre-interview nerves are getting to me 😱)

Those with full rides, do you mind sharing your stats please?
To be honest, I don't think mine are too stellar compared to some of the people on here. 513 on mcat, 3.78 GPA, relatively low volunteering and shadowing (we're talking like 80 and 30 hours respectively lol - in all of college!). I have probably above average research and a good amount of international experience though. I think being able to articulate these things well in addition to some past trials and my future plans did it for me. My interviews were pretty bomb. I think the thing about ut southwestern is that's they truly look at the holistic person, which is why they allow everyone to do their secondary. Stats are cool, but who are you and why are you doing what you're doing?

Mine were both faculty. Before we headed off to interview/tour, Dr. Mihalic told us what info the interviewers had on us. IIRC one has everything and the other has only your written stuff (so no GPA/MCAT). I only knew which was which because one of them told me, my interviews were both conversational.

Congratulations and thanks for the info! This really shed some new light. It's good to know that there is hope. 🙂
Based on what I've seen so far, they are pretty much filling up the "required" spots ( such as URM and 50% females) first, and also people with really high scores (regardless of their race & gender).

Um...ok. It's nice that you think I got accepted more as a requirement to fulfill the quota as opposed to my own merits 🙂. There really isn't a way for you to know the acceptance trends thus far at all, unless you happen to have some inside information on the admissions committee. I know my stats aren't perfect, but I'm still about average for the people that matriculate here.

Wow.... ummmmm.... How do I even respond to this?

They are filling up spots with people who have made a great impression at their interviews.

Didn't mean to start a fire here. Also, please know that in all sincerity, I did not suggest that YOU in particular got accepted to fulfill the quota. In fact, I presumed that you were someone who did not fulfill the quota, and therefore I am hopeful for others with similar credentials. However, the fact remains that medical schools do follow certain policies and procedures to maximize their yield, maximize their average GPA and MCAT scores, and fullfil certain state stipulated requirements. Holistic review does include race & gender also, not just ECs which UTSW openly states in their admissions procedure document. Based on my observation outside of this forum (which is a considerably large sample size), I saw that mostly females, URMs, and exceptionally high MCAT scorers (519-525) were offered acceptances in the first round of pre-match; of course there are exceptions like you who have some incredible life experiences. So, there is possibly hope for others on the next round.

Interview is just one factor in the holistic review, not a deal breaker unless you blow it. They pretty much know who they want before they assign the interview dates. But, more power to you, whatever makes you feel comfy cozy.

Respond? Why? Man we are eatin!😀
Please don't be upset. You have already made it, so this is not for you. Since this forum is for sharing information, I shared what I knew for those who are waiting to be accepted.

-_-

Based on the fb group so far, they're not because i see plenty of males and ORM in the group

I think this is true because the people i've talked to who prematched said they felt really good about their interview. I, on the other hand, had a terrible experience with one of my interviewers at utsw and did not prematch (despite have high stats).

Is the facebook group up already? I wasn't added and I prematched🤔
