2016-2017 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
These rejections are shocking. But shows UW wants students that fit its mission not just those with great stats.

Maybe, I'm not sure how you (not you specifically) assess that though. Madison has fairly generic mission statement. Of the ten schools I've applied to, they've all been in the Midwest. Madison and MCW in particular, being instate I put great emphasis that my ultimate goal is to practice someday in Wisconsin. As a public school, and as historical MSAR data shows, Madison has a massive instate bias. I'm not sure what happened, but I was a bit surprised by the rejection email as it was #1 or #2 on my list. Be that as it may, I suppose I'll have at least one more chance for things to go perfectly my way. If not, that's life.

Congrats! Any insight to share from your interview last cycle? When will you be interviewing?

I will be interviewing December 9th. When I interviewed at UW last year, there was one standard, one-on-one interview and one group interview, with the rest of the interview day being dedicated to information sessions and a tour of the medical school facilities.

The one-on-one interview was about 30 minutes long, and from what I gathered from other applicants, this interview was relatively low stress and conversational. My own interview experience was a bit odd and seemed to be different from that of other candidates. I was hardly asked any questions, not given much of a chance to say anything when questions were actually posed, and spent most of the time listening to my interviewer go off on tangents. I'm not sure if this was a test of my communication skills or something, but it was definitely weird. I actually attended UW as an undergraduate for two years, but then transferred; having to explain that made an already awkward interview even more so.

The group interview was with around 7-8 other students and was lead by two current medical students. This interview was quite laid back and the questions were more centered around applicants' personal backgrounds beyond wanting to go to medical school. I suspect the purpose of this interview was to learn more about who applicants really are as people and to see how they interact in a group setting.

Close. We also report on your ability to communicate your ideas. There is also a strong correlation between the impression that current students have during these interviews and corresponding clinical comments and grades. Good student interview approximates clinical success.

Advice from someone who does interviews for this school:
The student interviews are laid back but it is still super important to maintain professionalism during this time. Show you are a team player, be interested in what the other candidates are saying, address the other candidates by name, and try to talk to the other candidates, not just the interviewers. That's how you really impress us. Also, be friendly and interact with other candidates and staff during lunch and the other unorganized time. Don't think they don't notice these kinds of things and mention it to the dean of admissions. 😉

Also, sorry you had a weird interviewer last time. There's always at least one weirdo.

Best of luck with this cycle.

The student interviews are relatively laid back. They are more about the way you communicate and interact with others and less about the actual answers to the questions. You should be relaxed but not complacent; it will not go over well if you are kicking back in your chair and not paying attention when other people are talking. As long as you come across as a well-mannered and thoughtful person, you'll get a good evaluation. 🙂

Anyone else here interviewing this Friday and/or want to meet up Thursday afternoon to practice interviewing?

any in-state residents still waiting to be verified by the office of the registrar?

Me. I submitted my secondary early September, but they couldn't verify my residency, so I had to provide more info and am waiting on a response. 🙁

So glad I'm not alone! Would be great to get a chance to interview here but it is disconcerting to see so many really qualified in-state residents already getting rejections on here...

Hey all, new to this thread. I'm an OOS application, submitted my secondary 8/24 but a letter of recommendation was delayed so I didn't get notice my application was forwarded to the committee until 9/12. How long did it take for you guys to get an II or rejection once your application was in? At this point a time frame would be better than obsessively checking my email...

Hey all! I'm interviewing later this month and had a question about the dinner that occurs the evening before the interview. How casual is the dress? I don't want to roll in under/overdressed. Thanks for the info!

I also would like to know this info.

Are you talking about the social or did your invites say "dinner"? In the past, the social has been an informal meeting with current medical students with a limited snack selection.

I was talking about the social. Any idea what we should we were to this? Is the cheesehead mandatory or optional? Also, should I bring my own keg or will a keg be provided to me?

Edit: I am prepared to show up with a cheesehead and a keg of spotted cow if it will net me an acceptance.

Causal attire. You will be speaking with current medical students who will NOT be interviewing you the next day. It is a very informal meeting where you can ask questions about the program, the city, etc. without it affecting your application. No need to impress and honestly, no need to attend, unless you have questions you think you'll be too nervous to ask on interview day.

I would like to reemphasize that the socials have absolutely zero impact on your chances for acceptance. There is no sign-in sheet, nobody keeps tabs on who is there, and the students that are interviewing the next day aren't even allowed to come. So definitely ask the questions that are important to you and don't feel like you are being evaluated. And if it doesn't work for your schedule to arrive the night before your interview or you would rather just relax in your hotel room, it's not going to count against you.

That being said, I learned a lot about what the students like/dislike about the school by attending the social. Plus there is always that comfort factor of knowing the layout of the building and where the admissions department is before the morning of your interview. I found it to be very helpful and would highly recommend going!

Thanks so much. Was definitely stressing about this.

for anyone who has heard back with an ii recently, what dates are still open?

Anyone completed secondaries mid-September?
If so, have you gotten either rejected/accepted/interviewed?

I submitted my secondary mid-September and received an interview 9/27.

However, I applied to the WARM program, so I think my timeline may be slightly different than the regular MD program.

Yeah, it is different since they interview most of the WARM applicants and they get less applications so they get through those quicker. I got my WARM interview in less than a week last year. Regular MD applicants will take more time but try to be patient. They sent the last of the invites mid/early December last year.

Oh okay! Thanks for letting me know! It makes sense that WARM applicants would hear back sooner.

Did anyone that interviewed hear back with a decision yet?

Excitedly awaiting a decision here. Last year, the majority of acceptances reported on SDN came on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Good luck to all!

Fingers crossed for some news early next week then!

The trend was the same 2 years ago when I was applying - early in the week. Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear back!

I am waiting as well. I am an in state student. What school do you think is more competitive, UW-Madison or Boston University? I just got invited for an interview by Boston University and am trying to gauge my probability of getting one here.
