2016-2017 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, I'm going regular MD this time for a couple reasons. First, I felt that my two community letters for WARM weren't very good. I'm not sure who an ideal community letter would come from but I felt like mine didn't quite fit the category (I had a high school teacher and someone from my church). Also, in speaking with some current students during the interview day last year, some in the regular MD program who had done a couple of the rotations outside of Madison that the WARM students do didn't feel like they were the same quality and provided as good of a learning experience as the rotations in Madison. And of course, there's no reason I can't go into rural medicine without being in WARM.

However, I am working in public health in a rural setting (Wisconsin Health Corps) during my year off which would really help my WARM application if I chose to apply that route.

I'm applying WARM this year, and I am nervous about my community letters haha. When you were rejected from WARM last time, were you then considered for the regular MD pool, or does applying WARM and getting rejected from that hurt your chances for being considered for regular MD?

If rejected for WARM, you are still considered for the regular MD. However, my understanding is that the only real way that you would be accepted to regular MD after a rejection from WARM would be if you are not a good fit for the rural aspect. If you are rejected for any other reason, you can expect a second rejection in the mail a couple days later (which is what I got last year).

Gotcha, thanks for the response!

Anybody else still waiting for their residency verification??

Oh god I'm so antsy. I didn't think that rejections and II's would come so quickly for IS. No news is good news?!?! ahhhHHH

Seeing many OOS and IS with great stats getting rejected, I am scared now. I am OOS so my chance of getting an interview here is very slim. Praying to god that I get this one. Really love it if I could attend U Wisconsin. Complete about 2 weeks ago.

I was on campus at UW when I got the rejection e-mail. I was helping a younger sibling moving into a dorm. My parents, sibling and I were laughing and joking how exciting it would be next fall when both my sibling and I would be at UW. The rejection put a damper on that. The whole thing could have been out of some cheesy sit-com.

That is painful. I'm so sorry.

Oh wow...
Edit: I'm sure another medical school will express an interest in you. Stay the course!

Well...a few doctors I've spoken to said that UW Madison wasn't that great of a medical school anyways.

Probably not the most thoughtful (or accurate) thing to say to a forum of a bunch of people applying talking about UW being near or at the top of their list. Especially for someone who got a 499 on their MCAT.

@Bilateral Orchiectomizer

I will admit, the comment I made to provide consolation to someone was not needed and offensive.
However, I will say that if you're going to make a low-blow insult at a stranger, you should at least have the gall to do it on your actual account and not a side that says "joined today." (How's that for observation?) Seems a bit shady that you'd take the opportunity to go through my old posts, find my MCAT score, and use it against me in this particular situation while hiding/protecting your own skeletons in the closet (opportunistic/creepy much?) I'd go further and say it reflects poorly on your character (more than the comment I made that reflects on mine). You could have politely asked me to remove the offensive comment either here or in a PM, and I would have done so after admitting my wrongdoing. But instead, you resorted to a childish, personal attack on your iPhone that does not say much about your level of professionalism or maturity.

Still. Your comment was "Probably not the most thoughtful thing to say" to someone who never even applied here. So HA! Jokes on you, tough guy (and that's sarcasm).

You know application season is in the air when it brings out the neuroticism and crazy in everyone applying . Just a casual reminder: don't overthink everything you do, and try to think of yourselves as more than just a gpa and mcat score. I can guarantee you that after doing admissions work on the committee last year that many of the folks who are salty on sdn abt something but seem to be perfect on sdn are not always what they seem in person or on actual paper (who on SDN is gonna tell you abt their red flags or app weaknesses?). And just because you've jumped through the hoops for ecs doesn't mean you're a good fit for every med school in the country, so it's not a personal attack against yourselves. We had to turn away many folks who are now at ivys for med school, for example. We took a chance on a few ppl some of you may dismiss as not "competitive" by our stats. There's always more behind every decision than you can see from your side.

Also, make sure you write the name of the school correctly in your secondaries. It happens more often than you think lol. Other than that, let's keep it civil and not toss our sense of human decency for one another out the window 😉.

If Rodgers can stay healthy and the secondary is solid they will be a good team this year

Speaking of the Packers, I was up at Lambeau this past weekend for the opening UW football game against LSU. What a game! After seeing that, it kinda made me wish I went there for undergrad after I passed the chance up for my small liberal arts school. Nevertheless, this school is definitely tops on my list. I would love to go to a school that I've been a fan of my whole life even though the chances to go to football/basketball games in med school will be much fewer.

Should I be concerned if I haven't heard anything from the school? I submitted my AMCAS application June 28 and every other school has sent me an email letting me know they had received my information from AMCAS. I see some people on this thread got an email from this school. Is it because I am OOS and submitted a little later than everyone else so they are focusing on IS?

I am also OOS and I got my verification Email from them a day after my AMCAS was verified and a secondary invite 2 days after the verification Email. I was verified on August 12. So maybe you should give them a call. But it seems like this whole process is not very linear so I have no idea how it works.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH) has received your 2017 application from the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and your complete secondary application. The MD Admissions Committee has reviewed your application, and we regret to inform you that you have not been selected for an interview and your application will not be further considered.

MCAT: 520
GPA: 3.97

In-State applicant.

I could cry right now. I'm crying right now. This was my top choice.

I am so sorry. I find this shocking based on your stats and IS status. I'm sending you a lot of love and good luck in the cycle <3

UW all the way.
Inexplicable. So sorry to read what's happened to you. I know how you feel. It all seems so arbitrary, bordering on the capricious.

Rest assured, with your numbers you're certain to be accepted somewhere pretty special. Keep your head up and look forward to your inevitable acceptance at another school. You'll hardly remember this next year at this time.

Really appreciate that. It just hurts right now. I wish I knew why they rejected me.

I can imagine three possible reasons. 1. You're "overqualified" and they assumed you'd never attend if accepted--you're "ivy" league bound--so why waste an interview slot on you. 2. Something in your Primary or Secondary seemed a bit "off", which I tend to doubt because most applicants with your numbers are pretty good at this. 3. Someone at the reviewing end had a bad day--argument with spouse, too much Tabasco during lunch, who knows--and vetoed you or held sway just because they could--we forget there are human beings on the other end, who can be just as irrational and weird as the rest of us. These may sound trite, I know, but with your numbers and IS status, as I said earlier, it's inexplicable.

I don't know how I could be overqualified for a #25 school. I had 8 people read my essays 🙁 I suppose it could be a human thing... But I'm completely broke and in-state tuition was a dream of mine. I really appreciate the response and I wish you the best!!
I wish you the best too! Did you apply to MCW--IS tuition there is somewhat reasonable? Also, with your numbers and your financial situation, it's very likely that you'll be receiving terrific aid/scholarship packages at any number of schools. This is just the start--I'm sure schools will be competing for you in the next few months.

The silver lining is that I bet you will get into another great school- perhaps one that is ultimately the best fit for you in the end !

Thank you for your kind words 🙂

So I guess this means that UW is sending out updates as they get through people? They're not releasing in waves? Still no news (IS) but I don't know if that's because I'm on hold or they haven't gotten to me yet
