2017-2018 Mayo Clinic School of Medicine - Arizona Campus

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For any of you who received a likely letter, can you please post it here or PM me? I’m curious what it says.
Dear XxX;

It has been awhile since your Mayo interview day in Scottsdale, Arizona, and our admissions committee has embarked upon the important task of assembling the classes that will enter Mayo Clinic School of Medicine this coming summer.

Based on your impressive accomplishments and successful interviews, we remain highly interested in your candidacy. While the admissions committee will not be extending any offers until early February, and I cannot guarantee that you will ultimately receive one, I do want you to know that the committee has ranked you highly which is an indication of our ongoing strong interest in your candidacy.

As we made clear on your interview day, we seek to appoint individuals who count Mayo high —ideally first — among the outstanding options typical Mayo interviewees have earned. We are proud at Mayo of having the resources and ability to personalize our students’ educations so that they can achieve their dreams of becoming the best clinicians, researchers, or educators they can be. We are aware of your letter of intent, and have it in your file.

We understand that you may have further questions about what you can expect from a Mayo education, and I would be delighted to provide information or identify contacts to help guide you in your decision-making. We offer many opportunities for someone with your talents and interests, and would love to continue showcasing for you what Mayo Clinic has to offer.

I am, of course, always interested in your current thinking about Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and hope you’ll consider sharing it with me. I’d be pleased to pass on to my fellow committee members any communications you would like them to have.

Sincerely,

I am interviewing tomorrow- does anyone know exactly where I am supposed to go? I never got a follow up email, just the interview confirmation and something from the student group regarding housing. Thanks!!

Did you this letter snail mail or via email? And did you sent a Letter of Intent?

Any accepted Mayo AZ students who can comment on how they feel their interviews went an the actual outcome?

There have been no acceptances sent out yet (the initial batch will go out after the last interview day).
I felt really good about my interview and thought it went well. That seems to be a recurring theme with my classmates.

Do you know anything about these “highly ranked” emails? How closely correlated are they with acceptances?

I have no idea, there are people in the current class who got them, and people who didn't. I'm not in any way affiliated with the admissions process, so I can't speak about this cycle.

Received one of those likely emails earlier this week. Someone did a tally last year after the first round of decisions were released. Out of 20 acceptances reported at AZ, 16 received a "likely letter" and 4 did not. Nobody accepted off the WL reported receiving one, but nobody from either MN or AZ reported receiving the letter and being rejected. So getting one looks pretty promising, but there were admits without them. Fingers crossed for year-to-year consistency.

For those receiving "likely" letters, did you all sent a letter of intent?

I JUST GOT THE HIGHLY RANKED LETTER!!!!! AHHHHH. I did not have a chance to send them a letter yet, so I was shocked I got this today. I'm going to be sending a letter of strong interest as there's a really small chance I'll get a full scholarship elsewhere... I hope that won't hurt me that I can't send a full letter of intent. Either way I'm super thrilled!

Is the email the same as the one posted above?

Mine is slightly different as I did not send a letter of intent. Otherwise it looks pretty identical
Edit: okay now that I've looked back my letter was definitely very different than the one posted above. The sentiment was basically the same, though.

Also got one today but didn't send letter of intent prior to receiving it so the email didn't reflect that. But otherwise the same.

For all you guys getting likely letters, what are your clinical experiences?

Congratulations to all you guys getting likely letters! The admissions committee must've saw something special in you. I applied for the FL 2+2 Program and interviewed in mid-November. I called the administrative assistant and my application will be ranked next week! Fingers crossed, but I'm glad to hear all you folks saying you got the likely letter without feeling like your interview went well. I was on-the-fence about one of my interviews, so I'm really happy to hear that having a non-so ideal interview is not an end-all-be-all. Cheers! :soexcited:

I don't want to become too optimistic about my chances...I know it was mentioned above that nobody receiving the likely letter was rejected last year but what about waitlisted?

Reading last year's years thread and it semed like the likely letter was different from the highly ranked email we're getting and was an actual letter sent in the mail?

I didn’t get anything in the mail. Did you?

What was the content in the snail mailed likely letter?

On a more negative note, there were students who reported receiving the likely letter & were ultimately waitlisted in last year's thread.

Well, darn. You're right. It looks like 2 reported being WL'd after receiving the LL. At least one of them did get in though, and is attending.

This stresses me out. Can you link the post?

Are these likely letters/highly ranked communications showing up in the communication tab in the portal as well?

I didn’t get anything in the mail. Did you?
Nope, just the highly ranked email today.
Maybe they're not sending them this year? (Please let this be the case)

What was the content in the snail mailed likely letter?
I couldn't find any posts saying what it said exactly but I think it was sent by the dean and something along the lines of they like your app

For those who've received "likely" letters, what are all your stats?
LizzyM ~75

For those who've received "likely" letters, what are all your stats?

I get the feeling from things said on interview day (by students and staff) that your stats help qualify you to interview but after that it's more about fit, seeing the whole person, etc. Interviewers didn't even know our GPA/MCAT. But fwiw, my gpa was pretty low (3.56, cliche bad freshman year) and my mcat was fairly good (518).

so i went through the thread from last year again. they received a semi personalized message via snail mail from MN and called that the "likely letter". Someone called the office and was told that letter was a "thank you for interviewing" type of thing.

the "ranked highly" email is different. in last year's thread, they called it the "interest inquiry" email. about half the people who got in reported getting this email. no one on the WL reported receiving it.

take that as you will. im going to try to not read too much into it!

Wow thank you for this information! So has anyone with the highly ranked email gotten this likely snail mail letter yet? It seems like they might not be doing that this year?

Hi ChopinLiszt,

Congrats on your "likely" letter and thanks for your response! Our LizzyM score is the same and it's comforting to see how people who aren't perfect academically or felt like they interviewed well got positive results. Mayo is indeed about fit.

Their interest inquiry was totally unnecessary for me because I had sent them a LOI prior to that email. Maybe they have combined the snail mail letter along with the email since it says that you've been highly ranked, they like you & also ask if you are still interested. I guess I shouldn't have got my hopes up.

I think your hopes are appropriately high! They can't rank everyone highly, and I don't think they'd tell us that for no reason.

You are the real MVP!

Hey there, I have some stuff to report and some questions! I interviewed Dec 11. Thanks XALT for the advice -- you were right, they were super conversational! Questions were behavioral but often stemmed from topics in your top 3 activities/personal statement...can you describe a situation where there was gender/race bias and how you dealt with situation, what will you do if you do not get into med school, when did you know you wanted to be a doctor, etc. An amazing school and amazing program. The way things were explained to us, each Monday, they meet to discuss applicants. If both your interviewers are able to be there, then they will pull of all your application info and discuss you. They will rank you 1 to 5. They will notify you that you have been ranked, but they cannot give you the number. (The admissions person did not mention anything about saying "highly ranked" to us, but seems that some of you have gotten those emails.)

My question is, is it too early to send a letter of intent? I have weighed other possibilities and I genuinely believe that this is the place for me. One of the current students said she would wait until after the first of the year. Is it better to wait so that you can remind them that you're out there, or is it better to get this to them before you are ranked so that they know that as they rank you?

Happy holidays to all.

I agree with everything you mentioned. I have definitely lost track of what they specifically asked me (other than personal challenges I've overcome, what I learned in the process, some brief talk about how all physicians at Mayo are on salary and the associated implications). However, I do remember my interviewers asked me behavioral questions based on my most meaningful experiences. For those who haven't yet interviewed, they will tell you that your interviewers will have been blinded to your MCAT & GPA, but will get a snapshot of you (personal statement + most meaningful experiences + where you attended), so you and your interviewers can make productive use of your time together (the 30 min you get with each interviewer, which goes by quickly). Despite 30 min going by quickly, don't fret; it's definitely enough time for your interviewer to determine if and/or how well he/she thinks you will fit within the Mayo community. Additionally, I really appreciated how Mayo allows for SO many opportunities to ask questions and to learn more about their school and larger community; definitely one of the more informative and transparent interview days I've had.

Regarding letters of intent, I had been informed while at the MN campus that when they make admissions decisions, they look at applicants with whom they've been in contact since they have so few spots and need to be selective with who they choose to accept. I cannot imagine this would be different for AZ, so I would say if you know Mayo - AZ or MN is the right place for you and you would absolutely attend if accepted, I think it would help, but I don't think a letter of intent is necessary and this is just my take on it. I, personally, do not plan to write a letter of intent because I do not know yet if I will attend if fortunate enough to be accepted to either/both of the Mayo campuses and accepted elsewhere.

Hi guys,

I was just thinking of my 2nd interview at Mayo. It went smoothly overall, was conversational, and I had some good stories, but thinking back, some things that happened bother me and I’m just wondering what you guys thinks….

1. I put working as a part-time ED scribe from 07/2017-05/2018 on AMCAS, but later quit before the end date because I was overwhelmed with another full-time job in healthcare. The interviewer asked me if I still work as a scribe and I said no, it got demanding and I just decided to commit to one long-term. Does that sound dishonest since I marked that I will be working there for the rest of the year?

2. Interviewer asked if I had any questions at end. I asked about his experiences at Mayo, he explained, and asked if I had more questions. I said no, that all were answered by the administrative assistant. Does not having more questions look bad?

3. Interviewer has a habit of interrupting. We had a very flowing conversation with tons of cut-offs between sentences and him interjecting before I finished articulating thoughts. Stopped talking as soon as he interrupted though. For instance, was asked “Describe your scribing.” I said “I accompany the provider into the exam room….” Then boom interruption! “Tell me about your most fascinating patient case…” Is this type of behavior normal from interviewers or am I reading too much into it? Will it impact my evaluation negatively if we’re both talking at the same time?

4. Got asked the question, “Describe something you have done that shows your skill in quickly assessing relevant aspects of a situation before taking action.” Talked about an agitated with a long wait time in clinic. Explained could not make NP see patients faster and all other locations were full so no transferring of patients. Didn’t want him to feel neglected so sat in waiting room and chatted for 2 hours. Had good time, turned bad into good situation. Interviewer looked surprised and said “Woah you chatted for 2 hours?” Don’t think I made it clear my desk is in waiting room so I wasn’t actually neglecting my daily tasks. Do you guys think my response to the question was detrimental to my performance or is it minor?

5. Interviewer handed me a copy of the interview questions he was going to ask me and I accidentally took the paper out of the room with me after the interview ended. Wasn’t sure if I should’ve handed it back to him. Asked administrative assistant hosting us that day if I would get in trouble for this and he said “It’s fine.” I gave him the questions back. Does taking questions out with me look bad even though interviewer initially gave them to me? Was I supposed to leave them there? One Mayo faculty we Skyped with even announced example questions, so I’m guessing this is okay?

I’m not sure if my concerns are justified or I’m just being paranoid and overanalyzing the situation. Can't tell myself either way. Please let me know your thoughts! The more contributions the better! I will admit, however, that I got accepted to a school where I did not feel I was perfect about the interview either. People getting “likely” letters from this thread, please comment on your own perceptions and outcome! Thanks everyone. 🙂

I'm just going to be blunt: I think you are overthinking this way, way, WAY too much. Even if another user takes the time to comb through your list and answer every point, what do you hope to get out of it? Your time and energy would be better spent doing something you love that has nothing to do with the med school admissions process. Obsessing over minute details of an interview that you have no power to do anything about now isn't going to make you feel any better. It's done, you can't change it, and you'll drive yourself crazy if you keep worrying about it.

The more contributions the better! I will admit, however, that I got accepted to a school where I did not feel I was perfect about the interview either. People getting “likely” letters from this thread, please comment on your own perceptions and outcome! Thanks everyone. 🙂
Hey, I have not had a likely email (I wish!) but I did interview at Mayo also. 1. I think that explaining it is fine, not sure how much they care/pay attention to that stuff. 2. I think that is ok! 3. The same thing happened to me and it was quite frustrating!!! Not sure how this affects our interview, but I feel you on the interruptions -- "give me 3 reasons..." and I would get to the second and we would jump to another question. Maybe this was a way to keep the conversation moving for him to learn what he wanted to know? 4. I think that is fine, talking for 2 hours is impressive, not necessarily bad, seems like you made it clear that you weren't neglecting your duties. 5. I think you're fine! Sounds like you did the right thing in giving them back.

And in regards to the first response you got -- it is hard to let go of over-analyzing! This is something you care about and have worked hard for. I get the point as well -- I also need to stop over-analyzing and go do things, but it's hard. I guess I just wanted to let you know, I feel you, keep your head up 🙂
