2017-2018 Mayo Clinic School of Medicine - Arizona Campus

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a current student here, and I love the school. It's not perfect, and I acknowledge that. I think it's important to realize that there will be inherent self-selection bias with the people who read this thread, and those who post here. I'm sure there have been people who did not love the school, and that's okay. Interview day is as much for the student to gauge the school, as it is the other way around. The people who liked the school and want to come here are the ones who will most likely be posting in the thread, wanting updates, and asking questions.

🤣Yup, you're right. People like me rather watch this thread than go to the movies and eat popcorn. :corny:

Go to the theater, buy the tub of popcorn, skip the movie, bring popcorn home. Boom. Saved you 3 hours and the popcorn's basically the point anyway, right?

I know this is a few years out for you guys, but do you think mayo az holds the same prestige that mayo mn does in terms of residency matching? I loved the school but I’m honestly unsure as to how it’ll affect chances of residency (particularly for more competitive residencies).

Honestly we can't know for sure until my class goes through the match. What I do know is that our curriculums are exactly the same, our faculty is excellent, and the resources we have access to are virtually equal. Yes, we in Arizona may have to travel to Rochester or Florida for some of them, but they are still available to us as Mayo students. We are all under one accreditation, therefore everything has to be the same across campuses. At the end of our education our degrees will say MCSOM, with no distinction between which campus we attended. I think that based purely on the caliber of my classmates we will continue to have excellent results in the match, and probably would regardless of where we went to school.

I know no school is perfect, but what would you say are some of the issues that prompted you to say that?

There are none in particular, it was just a general statement. The opening of the school has gone extremely smoothly, with only minor technical hiccups.

The term “Full ride scholarships” has been thrown around this cycle in relation to mayo az. Are you or any of your classmates receiving full rides (tuition + all other expenses)?

Late to the party but also received the highly ranked email today at 2 am! Do we have a rough idea of how many of those have been sent out? What was the consensus for the future implications these letters have? Merry Christmas everyone!

Everybody who received highly ranked emails, did anyone of you interview for the FL 2+2 Program?

I can't speak about specific financial aid packages of my classmates, because I honestly don't know. What I do know is that Mayo is extremely generous with financial aid. Graduates of the school come out with some of the lowest average indebtedness in the country.

Also received the “highly ranked” email last week for the 4 year AZ program! Interviewed in November.

To those who got the highly ranked email, how are you responding if Mayo isn't necessarily your top choice? I'm struggling with a response because Mayo is definitely high on my list, but there is one school I would go to over Mayo no matter what. I don't have an acceptance anywhere yet though, and I don't want to gamble with my chances at Mayo.

Just tell them it’s one of your “top choices”. A letter of intent is only meant to be sent to your #1 school. I don’t think you’ll be punished if you don’t send one. My student host didn’t and she said many of her classmates didn’t either.

Has anyone who interviewed in October or earlier not gotten a letter? Feeling alone
+1. I've also maintained communication with my student host at MN, who said getting a letter is not a prerequisite to be accepted but is a good sign (obv for this part). He said plenty of his classmates didn't get a letter, so while it can be mildly discouraging, I would encourage anyone who hasn't received a "likely" or "strong fit" letter/e-mail to not lose hope and focus instead on how amazing 2018 could be.

Hey there, anybody have advice on letters of intent? What do you say, how long?

Also, who do you address it to? (Chair of committee, or dear admissions committee) What kind of format? PDF?

I actually just sent mine in the body of an email to someone in admissions that I spoke with on interview day. I did put it in "To the admissions committee" type format. The consensus (reading here after I sent mine) seems to be that you can upload it through your portal as well - I would think you would want a pdf to avoid formatting issues. Mine was only a few paragraphs detailing things I liked about Mayo, reasons why I'd want to be in Arizona, etc. Content matters more than length, so just say what you need to say and call it good. Good luck!

Me!! I am a nervous wreck, tbh

I was, too, but they are very friendly and conversational. Everyone says that, but it's true. Only one hour of the day is spent actually interviewing, and then the rest of the day is spent kicking yourself about things you said/didn't say while trying to look like you're paying attention on the facility tours. You'll do fine - just be kind and professional, and bring comfortable shoes to change into for the tour if you're a woman with evil pumps.

My application was “put on hold for future consideration” back in september. Should I just assume that I’m not getting an interview at this point? Or are they still extending interviews?

Received three highly likely letters from MN and not a peep from AZ. I think this is the part where I give up on AZ lmao

How strict is Mayo with it’s prerequisites? I received AP credit for Physics C but then retook the first semester of physics. I never took a second semester in college however, and instead used the ap credit to fulfill my preprequisites for a BME grad course. Do you think they’ll let this slide? Otherwise I’m screwed bc physics is filled up for the semester and if I were to take it in the summer it would end June 29, after their deadline of June 15. Maybe this deadline is flexible?

I was missing one prerequisite, emailed admissions and got a reply that they would accept my coursework as is. I would write and ask with the specifics of your situation.

Oh wow I feel so much better now thank you!

I think you are fine. I did not take several general premed reqs while at university and applied AP credit instead and I received an interview and highly likely email.

Hmmm I got an interview as well, but I’m just hoping that they won’t rescind any possible acceptance in case I don’t complete my one missing prereq. I emails them so I guess we’ll find out!

What would be your reason(s) you would choose Arizona over Rochester. Aside from the weather and family/friends.

Anybody who applied to the FL 2+2 Focus Program get a "highly ranked" from Mayo AZ separate from the combined program?

I counted 14 people reporting recieiving highly ranked emails:
NoMD4Me, ScreenName23, Medstudent 32,Darylhall, JH1120, Hookem66, fingerscrossed14, Immunorunner, Mcdocky, bumblebee928, chlory, Ms.Pediatrician, ChopinLiszt, new_new
Did I miss anyone? Has anyone else received them?
I assume it has been sent to 50 students. What do you think?
