Does Rush send out secondary to everyone? Also, I heard they have a pretty strict volunteer requirement?

According to the MSAR: "Secondary application invitations will be extended to those qualified applicants after initial review of the primary AMCAS application."

Last years thread said you must have at least 150 hours of community service. But a lot said they wanted more than just the minimum.

Secondary Received

@Lucca Prompts:

1. Describe personal attributes you possess or life experiences you have had that will enable you to better understand patients with a culture different from your own. Please include your self-reflection on how this experience has changed your insights, beliefs, and/or values. (1000 characters)

2. Describe a challenging situation in which you did not agree with a directive/rule and how you handled this. (1000 characters)

3. Reflect on a time in which you personally gained more from an experience than what was expected. (1000 characters)

4. What do you hope to gain from your Rush Medical College experience that will make you a better/different physician? (1000 characters)

What letters did you all assign to Rush? I am having trouble choosing since their requirements for non-academic and personal letters sound too similar to me.

Got the secondary. Anyone know what the screening comprises?

Yeah I was wondering what to do about that. I think I'm going to use my strong science professor letter for the personal letter, and my actual personal letter for the non-academic letter. These labels are weird.

Anyone know what exactly they count towards the 150 minimum hours of healthcare exposure

These questions are heavy for only 1000 characters. Being concise is going to be difficult.

Okay after looking further into Rush's program and mission and all the service opportunities, I'm DYING for a II from them. This school and GW have blown me away at how service oriented they are and how much they strive to support underserved communities.

Any current studies want to boast about Rush? I really want to know how you feel at the program and what your pros and cons of the school are.

Thanks!

These essays definitely took me some time to think about. Definitely my longest turn-around time for a secondary but I really really like this school. Happy to say I'm complete! Now the wait begins.

"Describe a challenging situation in which you did not agree with a directive/rule and how you handled this. (1000 Characters)"

Toughest question I've seen so far.
I agree- I've been thinking of what to write for this question for the past 10 days... Any suggestions/advice on what to write about?

I think the point of this question is to:
1. See if you are afraid to confront authority in a situation you believe to be morally wrong.
2. Assess how you act in situations like this to see if you handled it appropriately.

I wrote about a time when I was asked to present misleading data, brought up my concern, and then found out the authority figure did not realize it would have been misleading and was happy I brought it up. It doesn't necessarily have to be a time you were right or straight up rebelled or something. Last year's forums were saying that it might be good to take the stance that you brought up something and were wrong but learned from it (I just couldn't think of a situation like this for myself).

Keep it positive, explain what you learned, show that you are not afraid to bring up concerns to authority.

Thank you so much for the clarification of what the question is asking! This is super helpful. I think your answer is very solid. Good luck with your apps! 🙂

I agree! But I did something a little different because my directive was not something I could actually do anything about. So I wrote about what I thought of the situation, how I reacted to it, and what I thought could be changed for the better. I think it really just all depends on what you have personally been through.

Anyone know if they have a max # of LORs? Or is it just the 3 that you can submit?

When do they send out II. This school is one of my top 5. Such a cool program. I've heard the students here are all family-like and have a passion for service...

Does Rush still screen secondaries for an MCAT minimum? I know in the past few years your application never gets looked at even after a secondary invite unless you meet a certain MCAT minimum.

Would absolutely love a chance to interview at Rush. SUCH a community service orientated school and I love their mission. Good luck everyone, we got this :soexcited::soexcited:

I'm not sure if they screen for MCAT, but they 100 percent screen for service hours.
They have a minimum for "community service" as well as a minimum for "healthcare experience / patient interaction"

I forget the number, but I will update this when I get home. I have it written down.

Thanks for the response! The community service minimum is not a problem for me, since I have 6000+ hours. I was just debating on applying since my low MCAT is what's holding me back.

Dang how did you get so many hours?

Can someone explain what they're looking for in this question? Everything I write keeps on coming out pretty cliche :/

Think of anything in which you were supposed to get X out, but you actually ended up getting X + Y.

Hope that helps!

I wrote about a time where I got 2 snacks from the vending machine by accident, instead of just 1. I imagine the first woman to have twins felt the same way.

Does the ~600 avg per matriculant include hours over the next year? Wonder if that number is purely from the AMCAS app or if you update them when you matriculate

Do you think what you're suppose to get out,X, is suppose to be personal growth? For example, if I helped a nurse, I expected to just accomplish X objective for her, but I learned personal growth of Y. Or should it be: If I helped a nurse, I expected X personal growth, but I got X and Y personal growth?

That's definitely one way to approach the question. I would go with your first interpretation. You expected to learn clinically relevant skills (X) from helping the nurse, but ended up learning more about yourself (Y).

Perfect, I think I have a good direction to tackle this now. Thanks so much!

Secondary submitted! This thread is surprisingly not that long yet, has anyone gotten any IIs? I feel like I'm submitting late.
