Okay, I say this knowing that I'll probably receive a billion DM's asking for more specifics, but I was originally put on priority waitlist in December of 2013 after interviewing on 10/31 that year. I sent an update expressing interest in maybe February or March. Then I sent another close to when the "you must accept only one program" date was (some time in May I think), and then sent emails to Heinrich almost every 2 weeks. Finally, in June he asked me, "since you've been in contact with me so much, why don't you come in to speak with me about your application for next season?" I went in and treated it like a re-interview and his first question to me was literally, "If the admissions committee were in the room next to us right now and you could say one thing to get accepted, what would you say?" Don't ask me what I said - I blacked out and can't remember, but it worked because I got the call about a week or two later. Apparently there was a student who was on the fence about taking a year off and he wanted to meet me in person. Initially I sent updates to the office, and then emailed Dean Heinrich directly. The contents of my email were never just to pester them - I always tried to give an update on what I was doing, what my plan was for the following year should I reapply, and then always added some element of interest in the program. I'm graduating this year so it clearly worked. Don't lose hope. It is still early and you will likely not hear about getting off a waitlist until after that May whatever date, but you can always do something to keep your file at the top of the pile (figuratively - I don't think there is an actual pile).
