2017-2018 University of Pennsylvania (Perelman)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Am also a white male athlete from California. Will be going elsewhere.
I love you forever now. Giving me hope. Best of luck wherever you end up!

Can any current M1s confirm that Perelman is now pass/fail for the entirety of the didactic curriculum (e.i. until December of M2)? I remember this being advertised at interview day, but after looking at the pamphlet that was handed out, it looks like it is P/F until December of M1, and then H/P/F for the remaining year of classroom learning. Considering all of Perelman's peer institutions are P/F for the didactic years, this is a really major consideration for me, so thank you in advance for any input you have!

Edit: The website says it is P/F until December of M2, so I assume the pamphlet is out of date!!! Would still appreciate confirming this, though.
Confirmed.

what exactly is internal ranking used for?
Some schools *supposedly* keep internal rankings and then use "coded language" when making recommendations to residency programs. E.g. "@med2018ihope is a superlative candidate" = @med2018ihope is in the top 10% of our super secret Area 51 rankings vs. "student X is a quality candidate" = student X is whatever.

EDIT: I should add that I didn't know even about this practice until a current Penn student told me about it at my interview day as an example of something Penn does not do.

Talked to a current student yesterday about AOA/internal ranking. Here's what she said (she's a current M1):

"Penn is all pass/fail in the preclinical years, starting with our class (thank goodness!). It’s super super chill, with all tests being multiple choice. Even if you do fail a test you can just retake it - the professors want you to pass, so they do their absolute best to make sure everyone does. They do keep track of grades internally, and there is AOA. However they don’t send internal rankings to residencies or other schools or anything, they mainly keep track to make sure no one is falling behind. AOA thing is kinda dumb, but it’s not a thing on anyone’s mind bc everything is pass/fail and it’s not something you have too much control over in preclinical years (or past that I think - no 3rd or 4th years ever talk about it either). It sounds stressful but it really isn’t - no one seems to care or talk about rankings or anything, and preclinical especially is incredibly relaxed."

I made a throwaway to ask a potentially embarrassing question lol.

Can any current student comment on whether Penn drug tests before pre-clinical? I assume before you enter the clinics, but idk if I should be prepared for a test orientation week. I live in a legal marijuana state, so like I just want to know if I should stop enjoying it a few months in advance! It's cool either way, I just like to know.

Thanks. Hopefully I don't get judged to hard for this haha :angelic:

I emailed my faculty interviewer and he forwarded my email to associate director of admissions who said "PSOM changed in January of 2018 the grading of module 2 to Pass/Fail." and "The P/F grade is the only grade that will appear on the student transcript. As far as departmental records are concerned, the information would be used to identify students experiencing difficulty before possible failing. There are study hours and help in all courses to aid the students."

Accepted off waitlist! Is it beneficial to go to all penn preview events or which are the most important?

Email, phone call or both?
Got a call making sure my letter of intent was legit and then got an email the next day!

Edit: Legit as in I didn't send multiple intents to different schools

They updated the estimated CoA for 2018-2019 in the last few days (maybe today) so I am hoping soon.

I spoke to the financial aid department last week and they said awards will be mid April. they did not give a specific date

FA Packages are up! Well for me at least. Didn't get an email, but saw it on the FA tab of the application portal

Does anyone know if need based aid is fixed for the 4 years, or do we need to reapply each year?

I remember from interview day they said it was fixed over four years, unless there is some financial circumstance that would warrant reapplication for more money.

Side note: anyone else still waiting? My refresh game hasn't been this high since admissions came out.

I literally just got mine like 10ish minutes ago! It wasn’t up when I checked earlier.

Did anybody receive any information about merit scholarships, or is it just need based right now?

Grr still nothing for me.

Last year, it seemed they released merit and need-based at the same time.
