Last year, 964 people were interviewed for a class of 216. Not even factoring in the fact that usually between 1.5 - 2x the number of seats are accepted, 216/964 is 22.4% . Therefore, we know that at bare minimum (and this is a very conservative value) the number of interviewees accepted is at least 22.4%. I do not know whether they over-accept or just waitlist everyone who surpasses max capacity, but MSAR reports that on average 100 waitlist positions are granted, and 75 of those waitlisters will be provided an offer. That means in the worst case scenario for those not accepted (where all 748 people who are not accepted are waitlisted), you have a 13% chance of getting on the waitlist if you are not accepted right away post-interview. And if you are waitlisted, then you have a 75% chance of getting pulled off.

So according to my calculations, here are the worst (and I repeat, the worst) case scenario results:

about 22.4% of interviewees are offered an acceptance right after the interview, and only 13% of those who are not accepted are waitlisted.

Again, these numbers are only true if the following assumptions are true:

1. VCU does not over-accept past the number of available seats, and gives the remaining 748 interviewees either a position on the waitlist or a rejection.

2. All 748 of those applicants are waitlisted, and none are rejected until the very end of the cycle.

Does anyone have any data to chime in? any critiques on my analysis? I'm just trying to figure out our chances 😛

They decreased the number of entrants this year. It's only ~184. They also only interviewing around ~600-650 people this year so that's actually a ~30% chance of acceptance. There's also the fact that all the interviewees don't have a chance at acceptance. Since VCU uses the ranking system, the people who scored a 4-5 on the committee review are automatically rejected post II so that also decreases the number of people fighting for the seats thus increasing chances. I don't think they over accept but I could be wrong since that's what most schools do. VCU accepts a quarter of their class at each decision date so ~50% of the class still hasn't been accepted at this point. Most schools offer interviewees the option of joining the waitlist which not all applicants take whether it's due to loss of interest, another acceptance etc.

tl;dr: we probably have a better chance than we think we do

EDIT: I think you forgot to take into account the deffered, PhD, BS/MD people. They're also part of the total count

I’m on hold post interview; would it be appropriate to send a rec letter from the coordinator of the program I’m involved with for my gap year?

I doubt it. They only want grades/pub updates. No harm in asking though

What do you mean not all interviewees have a chance at getting in? so if a person scored a 4 or 5 pre interview, why would they waste our time and theirs interviewing us if they know we are getting auto-rejected after? that makes no sense haha

She’s talking about your interview score. Not the score before the II.

What a confusing about his/her statement is that of course not all interviewees have a chance at acceptance. That's why there isn't a 100% post interview acceptance rate anywhere (except maybe Ross)

This is post II. From previous posts, if you scored a 4-5, you probably failed the interview

True. I should of clarified. My bad. I took it from a different viewpoint. If you got an II, then that usually means, VCU is interested in accepting you as a student. Sure not everyone starts out equal but you at least had a decent chance. If you got scored low on the committee review, it's likely you just look good on paper.

I wonder how many people fail the interview? It seems like as long as the interviewee doesn't say anything too bad or completely bomb all the stations, chances are good that you'll pass the interview?

You'd be surprised at how many people look great on paper, but lack the interpersonal/interviewing skills to get in.

True. The way I see it, last year 216 people were accepted out of ~640 so that's around 34% of the interviewee pool. If you add in the standard 100 person waitlist, then that's only half the pool that's been given some sort of "acceptance". So the other half were rejected/ withdrew. I can't imagine the majority of the interviewee pool withdrawing so it's more likely they were rejected. I would guess at least a fourth of this group were in the 4-5 range. Could be wrong though

If you can't keep up a conversation with your interviewer for 10 min, it's hard to convince others you'd be able to socially interact well with future patients

Didn’t 216 matriculate? They will extend acceptances to more than that I thought...

I don't know for sure. I was going off of what Dean Mission said earlier. I don't know if VCU extends extra offers. With the way they hand out their acceptances, it seems unlikely. I would think they would just add everyone else to the waitlist

Do you get an email letting you know your portal's been updated? Or you just have to keep going back to check throughout the day?

Usually you get an email saying there's been a change to your portal, but most of us here are neurotic enough to keep checking throughout the day

What happens today? Sorry haven't been following this thread as closely. Kinda gave up hope lol

Feb 16 is the third date when acceptances are offered (everybody who meets standard is put on hold after interview and has to wait until these specific dates to get an acceptance)
The last date will be March 16

Anyone else getting that server error when u try to get into the portal

I ALSO JUST GOT TABS!! Interviewed end of January, OOS student. No e-mail about a Portal update or acceptance yet, just checked myself at 12pm and saw the change. When I checked earlier this morning, there was no change to the portal.

Does this mean an acceptance?

Edit: just saw dean mission's old message that tabs mean in haha

I have a feeling not everyone gets new tabs at the same time! Didn't have tabs when I just checked my portal, but I'm keeping my hope alive until 6pm

I wish those of us who already have hold messages could tell if it's been updated.

If they’re gunna make us wait for months might as well put us on a waitlist

Did anyone that didn't hear at the last acceptance date (i.e. interviewed before the last round of acceptances) get accepted this round? Just wondering if that happens
