Lol ok so this is a really dumb and neurotic question: when talking about a group member, is it ok to just use "their/they" instead of "his or her" when writing the essay? It just saves on character count and sounds better but its technically not grammatically correct lmao

I ended up picking either he or she and just going with that the entire essay because I was getting annoyed using "their"

I also used "them"

But seriously, I like to think that if that's all the adcom notices in my essay, then it probably wasn't very good anyways and doesn't matter...

Hi, everyone! Where in the secondary application are the optional research and additional info essays? I only see the greatest challenge, small group, and gap year essays. Thanks!

Isn’t it in another tab, look through the whole app

I'm having the same issue. Clicked through the entire application and couldn't find those two essays. I think I'm going to send an email Monday morning and try to get some clarification on the matter. Please let me know if you solve it first!

Have you guys checked for sure that you pressed save when you selected the programs you are interested in? I know that the additional essays don't show up until I selected both the university and college programs

I know this doesn’t actually help, but they initially didn’t show up for me either. A few days later when I went to submit, they were there and I was v confused.

Thanks guys! I see them now. To clarify my situation, I am applying MSTP and even though I saved last night, the additional essays did not show up. I tried type a few words of gibberish into the MSTP blank that shows up when you select the program and saved again this morning, and lo and behold, the research and additional info essays popped up. Hope this helps anyone else who encounters the same issue!

Did anyone last year get an interview if they submitted secondary after 2 weeks? I'm an idiot and just realized I'm a few days after their two week soft deadline. Case is a great school, would not want to ruin my chances.

Me too! I was hospitalized last week and turned it in this morning, but I received it on the 11th 🙁 well guess that’s it

For those who did multiple projects of research, are y'all choosing just one or are you writing multiple blurbs to cover each of them for the research prompt?

How technical should the research essay be? My topic is pretty niche and needs lots of background info... I'm in the midst of writing the essay now and it's so jargon-y

My research was also very intricate so I included a decent amount of background for mine leading up to the hypothesis (about half the essay in my case). I tried to simplify it as much as possible to make it readable for someone not in my field, but I still kept certain jargony terms because they were necessary. I just tried to explain them as best I could in the 500 word limit.

Didn't say the limit was 500 words thoooooo. lol. I wrote slightly more than that and was fine.

Most likely gonna be read by researchers used to reading tons of papers so I think being technical is fine. I still simplified mine a bit just to fit the word limit. Gave a brief background of about 2 paragraphs, then the hypothesis and methods and

If you applied to Lerner then yes it was 500 words. Case alone has an optional one with no real limit I think.

Ooooo i see, I thought I was tripping seeing these "500 word" research limits cuz i wrote like 600ish haha thx for clarification 🙂

Yeah it's confusing since they're two different schools with one application

Same, I never noticed it and feel so dumb. Running a little behind on my secondaries and it's been a little over two weeks now. Does anyone know if this is a death sentence or if I should still try applying?

How exactly is the optional research question phrased? Are they looking for the technicalities/summary of your research or your experience with research (ie. what you learned, future goals...etc)?

if i selected the 5-year research track on acams, can i switch it in my secondary? will they notice this change?

What do you mean? The primary didn't let you choose. The secondary is the place where you can choose. And you can apply to both, they're separate admissions, but it'll add extra essays for the 5 year track.

Does Case allow updates? I can't find any info about this on their secondary or are on their website. Thanks!!

@current students, do y'all know about/have info re: the four tracks? I wasn't able to find much on the website.

3rd year University Program here.

Can you give me more info or what exactly you're referring to? As far as I'm aware there's the 3 overall programs (MD - "University Program", MD w/research at CCF/CCLCM - "College Program", and there's MSTP or MD/PhD). The UP students spend all their time at Case, and then there's two variations of the 3rd year (either everything at Cleveland Clinic or nothing, but this is subject to potential change). The CP students spend all their time at the Cleveland Clinic. MSTPs only participate in the University Program.

College Program is 5 years. There's a mandatory research year. Most CCLCM students will do this between the typical 3rd year and 4th year of med school. Rationale being that it gives them the clinical cores out of the way so they can do additional exploration of specialty before the final year.

University Program is a typical 4 year program. The 2nd year is pretty short (ends in February) and is then usually followed by Step 1 study time and/or research.

MSTPs do the first two pre-clinical years with UP students, then go do research (usually 4 years), and then return for 3rd and 4th of MD.

If you mean the Pathways (Pathways Programs | School of Medicine | School of Medicine | Case Western Reserve University), those are more loosely-defined. They are really defined by activities outside of the regular MD stuff, and each pathway kind of does their own thing. TBH I don't know much about the pathways.
