Is it weird that I got an II from Iowa right away but haven't heard anything from DMU? My status was completed 7/25
No. It does seem strange, but I know people who have gotten in to Iowa and waitlisted/rejected at DMU. I've been complete at DMU for awhile now, and still haven't heard anything despite me being a student here. I haven't even gotten a secondary from Iowa yet, and I'm a resident.

Probably because your stats might be too good for them and they know you would get accepted elsewhere. Yield protection I would imagine.

Sadly my stats are extremely average at best... thinking about it, I may not have put as much effort into the questions on the primary application as I should have, I don't think I realized those were consided their secondary

I feel like DMU is maybe interviewing high stats first. Just a gut feeling.

FYI to all pre-meds. Yield protection isn't a thing. We have people with crazy high stats in my class and I'm a second year. It's just a comforting thing to say to a high stats applicant that comes across bad, doesn't fit the mission of the school, and doesn't get an interview. Every school has more than enough applicants already, and not interviewing high stats people who apply doesn't make any sense. Every school wants as high of stats that they can get, but still are able to fit into the culture of the school

I had my interview there yesterday as a part of their first group of the season. I can't speak for the others (14 in total, only 3 Iowans including me), but I wouldn't consider myself a high stat applicant.

On a rate of 1 to 10, how difficult/stressful was the interview?

If ten is high, I'd say a two. They haven't have time to train students yet, so later on in the cycle the panel will be two faculty and one student. Also as a heads up, they're changing the way they do interviews, so the first round was tough on the faculty as well. They're trying to make it more behavioral based. When we met with Dean Ripley, he suggested we think about times we've worked on a team to prepare for interviews that afternoon.

I really enjoyed talking to the faculty in my interview and can confirm that it is definitely a conversation. They're trying to sell you on DMU as much as you're trying to promote yourself.

So is the format 2 on 1 with faculty? Also, what time did the day conclude? Thanks!

It was 2 on one with faculty, but later on in the cycle it will be two faculty and one student. Interviews are in three sessions in the afternoon, with other activities such as a tour to keep everyone occupied. I was done a bit before 3, but I had the first interview slot.

Did anyone notice on DMU-COM's website that they added an "optional" completion of a CASPer test to submit? Has anyone heard of this? If you click on the link below you can find it in when scrolling down to number 6 on the application process instructions. I didn't submit one but I'm wondering if any of you did and what the point of it is.

I talked to the Dean and he said it really is optional. If you feel your application needs some strengthening and that CASPER will show your ethics then do it!

I wrote a few sentences and was in the first interview group. I wouldn't worry, if they dont invite you then its because they dont feel your a good match. They are huge on teamwork, hopefully some of your activities show this.

I dont feel this way with Des Moines being the highest or one of the highest DO stats for avg acceptances. Its about who fits what they are looking for. They changed their interview process this year to make sure to target their desired students. TEAMWORK and COLLABORATION.

I agree I am about what their averages are and interviewed with you.

I received a complete email but now just radio silence! I really want to interview here!!!! I have friends who go here and I absolutely love the cirriculum and foundation of teamwork!

I wish they wrote down the cycle in the email.

On the 7th, I got an email saying they could not offer me an opportunity to interview.
On the 8th, I got another email saying my application was complete and will be in review for up to 90 days.

I'm a reapplicant and seeing the first email scared me that I was rejected instantly.

Rejected after interviewing on the first day 🙁
Turnaround time was 1 week from the interview.

Good luck everyone!

Stats
508
3.72 gpa & 3.95 sgpa
1000+ clinical hours
500 volunteer hours

So sorry to hear about your rejection that really really sucks 🙁 What do you think went wrong?

Sorry about that! I feel like that is so early to get a rejection.

Edit: Called Admissions. For the MCAT, they "go by the year." So any MCAT from 2016 is eligible for 2019 matriculation. I should've submitted my primary a long time ago, lol.

Original post: Did anyone with a 2016 MCAT date before July 2016 (i.e., January to June 2016) move forward with this school (get a complete email or II)? Or are there any current students with an MCAT date that would've been > 36 months, but ≤ 42 months prior to matriculation (i.e., Jan. to June 2015 MCAT but still matriculated July 2018)?

Their website states, "Scores from exams prior to 2016 are not acceptable for the admission cycle for the class entering in fall 2019" and "All applicants must supply results of the MCAT, taken within 3 years of the date of desired matriculation year." I'm not sure if that means the oldest MCAT they accept is July 2016 for July 2019 matriculation, or if all 2016 test dates are still eligible for July 2019 matriculation; most other schools put the exact oldest month they accept for the MCAT.

I'm really interested in this school after reading great things about it, but I never submitted because I thought my MCAT was expired for it. (And I know there's no supplemental fee, so I wouldn't lose anything money-wise, but I don't really want to waste time on the primary questions and essays if my application wouldn't even be considered complete.) If no one has a definitive answer, I'll try to contact them after the weekend.

Anyone know good places to eat/grab a drink around campus? Looking for something to do tomorrow night
What kind of stuff you looking for? Can't go wrong with Wellman's for cheap drinks and a good bar food menu and its a block from campus. But there's tons on Ingersoll and downtown that are good

Wellman’s sounds fun if it’s where students typically hang out! Just trying to get a bit of a sense for daily life, nothing fancy or anything

I honestly could say I thought the interview went very well. I guess I’m just not the specific student that they are targeting for. I really am a normal guy not sure though. I have six other interviews so I’m not worried. Thanks for the concern.

Interview is tricky this year. New questions that put you on the spot. It will catch a lot of people off guard.

Completely agree, I was expecting a nice, low-stress conversation from the reviews of this school and instead it was kind of intense. They combed through my application, test scores, and grades in front of me and asked a lots of behavioral-type questions

That's how it used to be, with the main questions being, "Why DMU?" "Why DO?" but there's a change this year that include behavior/situational type questions that caught me off guard in my mock interview. I'm just glad I got the mock interview done before I (hopefully) interview here. The faculty is new to it as well so at least we have that going for us lol.

Did you do a mock interview at DMU...? Curious about their feedback

I did a mock interview at DMU as part of my master's program there. I don't know if my specific feedback would help you, but they basically said they wanted specific examples for their answers for their questions. It will also vary between interviewers.

When I interviewed for DO a couple years ago it was super chill. They did ask some about grades and my MCAT (I had a great CARS and thats all they brought up). Other than that it was about my CNA experience, hobbies, and just had free flowing conversation to the Why DO, Why DMU questions. If they made it more hardcore at least it isnt an MMI!
