2018-2019 University of Alabama

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don’t wanna make anyone feel bad or anything but I JUST GOT MY FIRST REJECTION!! From UAB nonetheless. This is such a monumental step forward in my future! I wish everyone luck at this cycle! As always, trust the process.

Been there, keep at it. Get feedback in person if you can and also by email in writing. Take what they say and apply it, but also do some other stuff that gets you out of your comfort zone. Don't let yourself get complacent with the prospect of getting into other medical schools; continue to actively work towards improving your application for next cycle.

Getting rejected this early gives you a huge advantage. Feeling that sting early on gives you more time to realize your flaws and address them.

Thank you for the advice man, I really appreciate it. The rejection came because I was OOS applicant with not enough ties to Alabama. I had some, but apparently they were too weak. Stings a little less knowing that but you are right, I just gotta keep at it.

Has anyone interviewed already or is there someone who is currently a student who can give me more information about UAB? I can't seem to find a ton of information on their website about curriculum, initiatives at the school, and opportunities that they have for students.

II today at 6PM EST for the primary care track! Complete 8/06
Regular decision, OOS, no ties to Alabama, Lizzy M score of 66-69

Only dates I see are October 4th and November 1st, which is probably due to my interview being for the primary care track

Anyone care to share their recent interview experiences for the regular MD program? Would love hear how it is!

any MSTP applicants or current students know how strict the 8 min limit is for the chalk talk?

Does anyone have any interview advice for UAB besides the generally applicable stuff? I have my interview on November 1st.

Does anyone know if their MSTP recruitment emails mean anything at all?

Honestly, the MD portion was very chill. I was really nervous about the MMI. I didn't really prepare for it. I don't have an acceptance lol but I think it went well. Don't stress too much. It really is a very relaxed day and the staff are very welcoming and actually kind of funny. Bring water, as you might get very thirsty from all the talking.

Also, it was very hot when I interviewed. It was in the 90s. Be prepared for that.

OOS rejected today (pre-interview), good luck everyone!

Has anyone heard anything out of UAB recently? II's or R's

It just seems crazy that this thread is mostly dead when UAB receives 3000+ apps and with 570 being IS. Wake up thread!!!

I interviewed on 9/20 and got the "no longer under consideration for admissions" email last week.

I believe their next admissions meeting will be the 25th, which is when they might send out the next round of acceptances.

Hopefully I'm not too late in replying to this... sorry!! Current MSTP student here.

Yes, as someone else mentioned, the time limit is pretty strict. A few years ago, how they would do it was kind of raise their hand when you had about a minute left (so that you could start wrapping up), and then they'd let you know when your time was up. If you were mid-sentence, they were super nice and would let you finish the sentence so it didn't feel super awkward/terrible -- they definitely are nice here!

However, the interview schedule is pretty rigid, as is common with MSTP interviews because there's just so much to do. So yes -- in consideration of all of the other applicants who need to give their chalk talks, it's really important to plan to stay within the allotted time! If you can give yourself at least a 20-30 second buffer, too, this might be the best idea. They typically will reserve questions for their personal interviews with you, but I did get a question in the middle of mine that forced me to go over the time (in finishing my last sentence) by just a few seconds.

Good luck! 🙂

Any calls to anyone today?

If it is like last year we should start hearing something next week. If I don't get an R next week then I'll consider that positive news. They did a mass rejection on Nov 1st last year.

I'm a reapplicant this year so I'm not sure if the policy is on us anymore. They used to only look at reapplicants in the spring.

*EDIT*

The website says that we will be reviewed with all other applicants now. Not sure if that's good or bad.

Are these mass rejections after interview or before the interview?

I'm not sure about that. I had a late application last year IS and a few friends and I were part of the mass rejection. Hopefully, you will get an acceptance. They usually don't invite you to an interview and reject you. If interviewed terribly that's a different story. Waitlist is also I different story. That's just what feedback I've received from friends who got in and who didn't.

🙁 don’t fret, if it’s it your first you’re still better off than most! Good luck with the rest of your applications!

Was this before or after interviewing?

R pre-II this morning!
Has anyone ever contacted UAB, or any school, after a rejection to get some details on what they didn't like? It's looking like I'll have to reapply next year, so I'd like to know what I need to improve. TIA!
