2018-2019 University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine

Applicants have to narrow down acceptances to three schools by April 15th and one school by April 30th. Starting April 30th schools can run "detailed reports to identify their accepted and alternate list applicants who have selected “Plan to Enroll” or “Commit to Enroll” at their school versus another school." [AAMC]

My guess is that we'll start to see more movement around mid to late April once schools start to get rejections and they have more detailed information about waitlisted applicants.

Current M1 here. Congrats to those accepted! UB is a great school and I've loved my time here so far. Also, if anyone is looking for a place to live for your first year hit me up.

Hey, would you happen to have a rough estimate of the number of your class that was accepted off the waitlist?

Interviewed third week in March and waitlisted the following day. Does seem that this waitlist may be very long

Anyone know the FASFA code for buffalo. I'm having a hard time finding it online.

Anyone else super confused by the Health Background Form? The acceptance info says records regarding MMR vaccination, TB test, and TD vaccination are necessary (obviously). But then the form we have to fill out is full of other information. Are these "if applicable"? Maybe its just the layout that is confusing me but im stressing out thinking about having to find all of these past records.

Was accepted off the WL this Tuesday! Interviewed in Early Feb. Did not send any update letters or anything. Sure a lot more movement will occur in just a couple weeks!

If any current students are browsing this thread, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to reach out and ask a couple questions!

have accepted students here been given a deadline policy for when to commit by?
I think the deadline policy for all applicants is April 30th:

I know that there is no on-campus housing for the Jacobs building specifically. However, I wanted to know if a current medical student would be nice enough to tell me whether most students choose to live in the provided UB Apartments/Resident Halls for Graduate students, or lived in a private apartment building. I'm sort of struggling to figure out which approach I should take. Any information will help. Thank you!

On offer letters.

In general, I guess that offer letters could be received by email, by regular mail, and be posted on the portal of the school.
Did people get detailed offer letters which spell out what is the candidate supposed to do by April 30. In particular, did an offer letter state that xx number of days before matriculation the candidate has to drop from all other waitlists?

I believe most of the provided UB apartments/residents halls (even ones for grad students) are not actually very close to campus. They are in Amherst, whereas the medical campus is downtown which is about 15-20 mins away by car. From what my friends currently attending UB tell me, most people rent near the medical school just to be closer to the medical campus; however, some current medical schools do prefer to study in libraries in the Amherst campus (shared with undergrads) so it's up to you where you would rather be closer to.

I just read that some schools aren't requiring students to commit to enroll by april 30th. So I didn't know if UB is doing the same or if they revealed to accepted students a specific date that they need to select commit to enroll by. Does anyone know?

Received the following e-mail on 3/26/19:

To all Acceptees to the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences,

The purpose of this email is to inform each of our current accepted students of our expectations with regard to the upcoming changes, as of 4/30/19, in the “Choose your Medical School” tool.
To start, we would like you to understand that we know not all those we accept to the Jacobs School will matriculate here. There are many weighty factors which enter into such a decision, including financial considerations, proximity of family, proximity of other supports, etc.

That being said, we believe it is a matter of professionalism that applicants accepted at multiple schools remove themselves from the lists of accepted students at schools where they don’t intend to matriculate in as timely a manner as possible, so that waitlisted applicants can be offered spots in sufficient time to make plans for their own matriculation.

There are two tools which we would like our applicants to consider choosing, in as timely a manner as possible. Explanations of our policy regarding these follow:

Plan to Enroll (after 4/30/19): This tool indicates a preference for one school over the others at which an applicant has been accepted. The school chosen is notified that the applicant is planning to attend their school. The other schools at which the applicant has been accepted or waitlisted are notified that the applicant is choosing another school. Applicants choosing this tool may continue to interview at other schools, and may also accept offers off of waitlists. However, per AMCAS instructions, students choosing “Plan to Enroll” are communicating to all schools at which they hold an acceptance that they have made a choice about the school at which they choose to enroll, and that they are withdrawing from other schools such that they continue to hold only one acceptance. If you choose the Jacobs School, we expect that you will withdraw from all other schools to which you have been accepted (not waitlisted). If you choose a school other than the Jacobs School, we expect you will email us separately notifying us of your withdrawal. If we do not receive such email, we will reach out to you and may request such withdrawal.

Commit to Enroll (after 4/30/19): This tool also indicates a preference for one school over all others, but this choice confirms that the applicant is not only withdrawing from other acceptances, but that the applicant is also withdrawing from all schools at which the applicant is waitlisted. The school committed to is notified that the applicant is committing to attend their school. The other schools at which the applicant has been accepted or waitlisted are notified that the applicant is committing to another school. Per AMCAS instructions, by selecting “commit to enroll,” an applicant is indicating his or her final selection and has withdrawn all other applications, including waitlist positions. If you commit to the Jacobs School, we expect that you will withdraw from all other schools to which you have been accepted or waitlisted. If you commit to another school besides the Jacobs School, we expect that you will email us separately notifying us of your withdrawal from our acceptance or our waitlist. If we do not receive such correspondence, we will reach out to you and may request a withdrawal.

Again, we understand that the decision of where to attend Medical School is not an easy decision, nor one made lightly. For this reason, we will not require that our applicants commit to enroll at the Jacobs School prior to Friday, July 5, 2019. In fairness to applicants who are on our waitlist, we respectfully request that our applicants communicate to us their intentions as timely as possible. However, as of7/5/19, we will expect that all acceptees who intend to matriculate at the Jacobs School will have chosen the “Commit to Enroll” tool for the Jacobs School. If, after 7/5, you have not chosen “Commit to Enroll” at the Jacobs School, we will reach out to you and request a withdrawal.
For additional clarification of the “choose your medical school tools”, please use the following link: https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-medical-school/article/amcas-choosing-your-medical-school-tool/

Thank you very much for your cooperation with this new process. Do not hesitate to reach out to our office if you have any questions.

I've been trying to be patient until May but i guess now we have to be patient until July???

This is actually ridiculous. I thought the April 30th date was quite fair. It really should not take someone until July to make a final decision. So irked.

Hopefully people will still mostly commit to enroll by the end of April. I don't see why anyone would wait until July before committing to enroll unless they were still on a waitlist somewhere else.

You're right. Not to mention that majority of people wouldn't want to wait so last minute to find a place and roommates.

Just declined my acceptance. Best of luck to those still waiting! For those interested, I interviewed in the end of October and was placed on the waitlist the next day. I received the offer on 4/16 so it seems like there is some waitlist movement so far.

Also to speak a little about the commit to enroll, it is not required until ~21 days before matriculation/a date determined by the school. Once someone selects this, it locks them into the school that they have chosen it for and removes them from any waitlists they may still be on. People should only be holding one acceptance after April 30th. If someone has an acceptance to UB and does not select commit to enroll, it will be because they are waiting for possible waitilist movement with the understanding that, given no waitlist movement, UB will be their choice. I would expect the majority of movement to still occur in early-mid May after people narrow down to one school and movement continuing throughout the summer.

I just got accepted this morning and it says that i need to wait for an email to establish my UB person number before paying electronically. How does this work? does that mean i just have to wait for them to email me again and that my spot is safe until then?

I just got accepted yesterday and sent in my signed letter today! About how long is it taking for people to get the e-mail to put down the $100 deposit?

Yea I called Mr. rosso and he said the one week to put your deposit in starts after you get that person number email

Anyone know if UB is switching to P/F next year? Can't find anything on their website or frankly anywhere else but I'm fairly confident it was brought up during my interview day.
